    2. Scientists estimate that there are 28,000 species of butterflies throughout the world.
    3. Most are found in tropical rainforests, but they can live in all climates and altitudes of the world… butterflies do migrate to avoid cold weather.
    4. Many believe butterflies got their name because they would fly around the buckets of milk on farms… while the milk was being churned into butter, many noticed these flying insects would appear and soon they were being called butterflies.
    5. Butterflies have three body parts, like all other insects: the head, the thorax (chest), and the abdomen (bottom)…the butterfly's four wings and six legs are attached to the thorax.
    6. Butterflies are colorful for many reasons…colors help them attract a mate and absorb heat… color also helps them blend in among the flowers when they are feeding.

utterflies are among the most beautiful and marvelous creatures in all of nature. Tropical Central and South America is the richest region in the world for butterflies, but they are found in many other places as well. Costa Rica has over 1300 species. A butterfly's life begins with a very tiny egg laid on a leaf. From this develops a larva, the butterfly's caterpillar stage. Eventually, the larva makes a cocoon or chrysalis. Safe inside, it develops into a pupa. Eventually, a beautiful butterfly is released from this container, flying heavenward, fully-developed. What an astounding transformation, from a humble, earth bound worm-like creature to a delicate flying wonder!
The adult usually eventually returns to the very plant or tree trunk where it grew up. There it lays its own eggs and begins the process anew (a 2 to 3 month cycle). Did you know that…
The color in a butterfly's wings does not come from pigment. The color is produced prism-like by light reflected by their transparent wing scales.
Stranger yet, no moth or butterfly eats solid food (though some butterflies drink nectar); some can not even take in moisture.

Butterflies have been revered by mankind since before the dawn of recorded history. They are among the most fascinating and beautiful animals; even people who care not for insects in general usually have an affection for these winged wonders. This is a very diverse family of true butterflies, and they occur everywhere except the polar ice caps. Their unifying characteristic is the reduced fore legs of both males and females. These vestigial fore legs are useless for walking and give rise to the family's common name. Brush-footed butterflies also have large prominent knobs at the tips of their antennae, and furry palpi. This family incorporates the admirals, fritillaries, checkerspots, crescentspots, anglewings, leafwings, painted ladies, tortoiseshells and longwings. Battle Over Butterfly Releases

Butterfly Clip Art
Butterflies, Americans' favorite insects, continue to gain fans, especially with respect to wild butterfly identification. The reasons for their popularity are simple, with the colorful wings of many species, plus the fact that both butterflies and people enjoy flowers and being outdoors on sunny days above 60 o F, leading the list. The North American Butterfly Association (NABA) suggests that the average person might be able to find up to one hundred different butterfly species within driving distance of their home. It should be noted that those hypothetical one hundred butterfly species are often present only at specific points of time, usually from early spring through early fall. The butterflies presented here, approximately one hundred and fifty species, divides into two pages. The species listed at the bottom of this page fit into the Lycaenidae family (blues, hairstreaks and coppers), the Pieridae family (whites and sulphurs) and the Brushfooted butterfly family.

Celebrate With Butterflies – The Flying Flowers
Make your upcoming event the most memorable ever by adding butterflies to your special day. Butterfly Releases are a perfect way to celebrate all of the important occasions in life. They are wonderful additions to weddings, anniversaries, funerals, memorials, birthdays, holidays, ceremonies, and even corporate events.
Since the butterfly symbolizes new beginnings, releasing butterflies is a wonderful way to add a special touch to celebrations. There is an old Indian legend that is often read at butterfly releases as the guests make a wish and release their butterflies.
Each release will have it’s own unique memories and can become a tradition that is passed down from parent to child. Children and adults alike will marvel as the butterflies are released into the wild. Sometimes the butterflies fly right off and sometimes they linger - maybe to share a special moment with the one releasing them.
Butterflies may be released in their own individual container or they may be released from a mass release container, depending on the occasion and the design you find most appealing. Butterflies should only be released outside on a sunny or overcast day with a temperature of around 70 degrees. A release held in a warm, sunny, flower filled area is best. Nature has given us many beautiful wonders. None are more spectacular and memorable than that of the butterfly in flight. Experience the extraordinary – Release a bouquet of butterflies at your next celebration.

December 1999 Planting gardens with flowers that attract butterflies is a natural way to attract these lovely creatures to your yard, garden, patio, or even window sill. Brightly colored butterflies provide interest to your surroundings and are also effective crop and flower pollinators. Your butterfly garden will also attract birds and other wildlife. Before you begin your butterfly garden it is important to know something about butterflies and about their life cycles, biology, and behavior. Butterfly Life Cycle All butterflies have the same general life cycle, consisting of four life stages: egg, larva (the caterpillar), pupa (chrysalis), and adult (the butterfly). Each stage has special food and environmental needs. The cycle begins when butterflies deposit eggs, which they may do in the spring, summer, or fall. Eggs differ in size and shape depending on the species. Butterflies can lay anywhere from 200 to 1,500 eggs depending on the species. Some are laid singly, some in clusters. A good nectar source is important to the adult's ability to produce large numbers of eggs. In most cases, eggs hatch within a few days of being deposited. Once a caterpillar is full size, it enters the pupal or chrysalis stage. Using silk produced by silk glands, the caterpillar attaches itself to a plant (or other object). Some butterflies, such as skippers, pupate inside a thin covering of silk and leaves. The caterpillar stays still for about a day as the pupal skin forms under the caterpillar skin. Then the old skin splits open and the pupa emerges. Pupae of some kinds of butterflies can be green or brown. The pupae of monarch butterflies are bright green.

While it may not be possible for us as individuals to save the entire world, we can do some things to improve our little corner of it
- our own property and our neighborhoods.
One way we can do this is to grow plants on our property that are native to our region. This will help our ecosystem by providing quality food and shelter to local wildlife, including butterflies.
If you are new to butterfly gardening, I suggest you start reading the articles in my ' Articles ' section, such as the Introduction article.
If you already have some knowledge of butterfly gardening, you may want to start looking at the pages set up for individual butterfly and plant species.
Spring is coming! Last summer was a bad butterfly year, at least for my garden. I hope this coming season will be much better! Unfortunately the garden doesn't look at nice now because of the fencing we had to put around it to protect the plants from the dog. Mayb someday we will be able to get something that looks a bit nicer! I've started a new site at ButterflySonatas.com
