Butterflies are attracted to nectar plants with strong fragrances and bright colors. Most butterflies will feed on a variety of nectar plants, but each species of butterfly requires specific host plants for laying their eggs and feeding their caterpillars. To attract a variety of butterflies and to get them to stay in your garden, you will need to plant combinations of nectar plants and host plants. The following chart was prepared by Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden in Coral Gables. The chart lists locally available nectar plants, host plants and the names of the butterflies that they will attract. If you would like more information about how to start a butterfly garden, a Miami Kitchen Garden representative will be happy to help. Please email your questions, or call

HOME BLOOMIN GARDEN CENTRE Store Hours Current Specials ... BLOOMIN GARDEN CENTRE BUTTERFLY GARDENING BASICS Getting Started Plant nectar flowers in masses, not in single plants, to optimize colors and scent and to minimize weeds. Place dark stones in your garden. They provide a spot where adult butterflies can bask in the sun and warm their bodies. Use colorful plants, especially blues, purples, yellows, pinks with single flowers, to attract butterflies. Choose a sunny location that is sheltered from the wind by trees, shrubs or a building. However, be sure the garden is in a location that will get at least six hours of sun a day. Butterfly Plant Tips Grow plants that nurture all stages of the butterfly life cycle from caterpillar to adult butterfly. Remember host plants that nurture butterfly larvae are often weeds, wildflowers, shrubs and trees native to the area. Nectar flowers provide a source of food for adult butterflies. Select a number of plant varieties so the garden is in bloom all season long. Mix annuals and perennials for optimal effect. Choose flowers that provide a feeding platform. Butterflies must stand on their food.

Last Update Butterfly Gardening B utterflies are like flowers floating in the air. To make your garden inviting to them means adding a certain magic to your special backyard paradise. A garden with butterflies (as much as one with lizards, toads, earthworms and other such creatures) is a healthy, balanced and productive garden. In addition to their beauty, the insects of the order Lepidoptera (butterflies, moths and skippers) provide us the service of pollinating the flowers we grow in our gardens to provide us with the seeds and fruits we enjoy. B ecause , by design, butterflies are flyers it is not possible to create a permanent home for these magnificent creatures in your yard, only a way-station where they may stop by to refresh themselves during their everlasting journey. But by providing the carbohydrate-rich drinks they need for their energy intensive flight and the foods their children need to develop into their parents image, they may visit your little slice of Eden to allow you to enjoy their almost ephemeral beauty. B e aware though that just providing these colorful little angels the food and drink they prefer is not enough. No matter how much Buddleia, Milkweed, Sweet Alyssum or other butterfly favorites you may grow in you garden they will avoid it if you are in the habit of using insecticides, weed killers or seed dressings. Yes, some bad bugs may interpret your invitation to the butterflies to apply to them too, but if you give nature a free hand the birds, lizards, frogs, toads, parasitic wasps, ladybugs and other allies will keep the uninvited guests from ruining your garden party.

Gardening
The first step to butterfly gardening is to look around your area and try to identify what butterflies frequent your area. If you don’t see any butterflies you can consult some charts and find out which butterflies are indigenous to your area. Click here to look at a chart of the United States.
Once you and have identified which butterflies you would like to plant a garden for, you can go to the HOST/NECTAR CHART and find out what plants will attract these butterflies. Many butterflies have only one host plant that they lay their eggs on. This host plant is the food for the caterpillars. Butterflies are different. Most butterflies take nectar from a variety of flowers. For this reason , when planting a butterfly garden you should plant a wide variety of nectar plants. Butterflies will be attracted to different colors, sizes and shapes. Choose a large area of ground that receives ample sunlight. Prepare the ground by removing weeds, and augmenting the soil with some rich garden soil. PLANT NATIVE
Before you pull all the weeds in your yard and buy a bunch of expensive plants from a nursery consult the charts and see which of the “weeds†are actually a source of food for either the caterpillar or butterfly! Butterflies were here on the earth long before man started planting butterfly gardens. Some of the most popular host and nectar plants grow in the wild and are considered weeds or native plants. It’s possible that you don’t even have to invest in plants but instead just stop pulling and spraying the weeds! Clover, lantana, Spanish needle, daisies, black-eyed Susan, thistle, Queen Ann’s Lace and milkweed are just a few of the flowers you will find growing out in fields, along road sides that butterflies flock to. Herbs such as parsley, dill, oregano are also the host plant for some butterflies. Don’t go for an organized, manicured look. Butterflies will be attracted to masses of a variety of color.

    • Plant larval foods. Many caterpillars, which metamorphose into butterflies, require require specific host plants for food. By selecting particular species, you can provide the basic habitat requirements for specific species that you'd like to see as adults. Since highly preferred hosts may be unattractive or eaten until they have few leaves, plan an out-of-the-way place for these hosts. You might also want to provide host plants for some of the more attractive moths. Plant species with nectar needed by adults.

While it may not be possible for us as individuals to save the entire world, we can do some things to improve our little corner of it
- our own property and our neighborhoods.
One way we can do this is to grow plants on our property that are native to our region. This will help our ecosystem by providing quality food and shelter to local wildlife, including butterflies.
If you are new to butterfly gardening, I suggest you start reading the articles in my ' Articles ' section, such as the Introduction article.
If you already have some knowledge of butterfly gardening, you may want to start looking at the pages set up for individual butterfly and plant species.
Spring is coming! Last summer was a bad butterfly year, at least for my garden. I hope this coming season will be much better! Unfortunately the garden doesn't look at nice now because of the fencing we had to put around it to protect the plants from the dog. Mayb someday we will be able to get something that looks a bit nicer! I've started a new site at ButterflySonatas.com

December 1999 Planting gardens with flowers that attract butterflies is a natural way to attract these lovely creatures to your yard, garden, patio, or even window sill. Brightly colored butterflies provide interest to your surroundings and are also effective crop and flower pollinators. Your butterfly garden will also attract birds and other wildlife. Before you begin your butterfly garden it is important to know something about butterflies and about their life cycles, biology, and behavior. Butterfly Life Cycle All butterflies have the same general life cycle, consisting of four life stages: egg, larva (the caterpillar), pupa (chrysalis), and adult (the butterfly). Each stage has special food and environmental needs. The cycle begins when butterflies deposit eggs, which they may do in the spring, summer, or fall. Eggs differ in size and shape depending on the species. Butterflies can lay anywhere from 200 to 1,500 eggs depending on the species. Some are laid singly, some in clusters. A good nectar source is important to the adult's ability to produce large numbers of eggs. In most cases, eggs hatch within a few days of being deposited. Once a caterpillar is full size, it enters the pupal or chrysalis stage. Using silk produced by silk glands, the caterpillar attaches itself to a plant (or other object). Some butterflies, such as skippers, pupate inside a thin covering of silk and leaves. The caterpillar stays still for about a day as the pupal skin forms under the caterpillar skin. Then the old skin splits open and the pupa emerges. Pupae of some kinds of butterflies can be green or brown. The pupae of monarch butterflies are bright green.
