To have a successful butterfly garden plants must be offered that provide both nectar for the adult butterflies and host plants on which they can lay (or oviposit) their eggs.
http://www.dallasbutterflies.com/Butterfly Gardening/Gardening Main Page.htm
Butterfly Gardening To have a successful butterfly garden plants must be offered that provide both nectar for the adult butterflies and host plants on which they can lay (or oviposit ) their eggs. Since each species of butterfly and moth (remember, you'll be planting for them, too) has specific requirements, a bit more attention must be given to your choices. Butterfly gardening can be as simple as throwing out a pack of zinnia seeds, or as complex and involved as you'd like to make it. Like all gardening, there is a certain amount of trial and error, learning what works in your location and adding new host and nectar plants as you go along. As the partial list below shows, there's no shortage of either from which to choose. When butterfly gardening there are two mind-sets that have to be discarded. One is the idea that your plants must have each leaf in place and unharmed. Remember, you want to have chewed leaves and caterpillars crawling around your plants. That's a sign of success! Yes, you'll have some denuded branches for a while, but the plants grow back, and you get rewarded by having butterflies and a garden that is truly alive! Which brings me to the next mind-set that has to be thrown out: pesticides. Pesticides and chemicals have no place in the butterfly garden. There are specific organic approaches to all the problems that might creep up or into your garden. By using them you'll be amazed at how quickly your garden comes back "into balance" with nature, which provides its own pest control system. The result is that your yard will be more alive with not only butterflies but all manner of insect, bird and other wildlife.

Butterfly Gardening
Imagine your garden alive with color and life. Think of a bright yellow swallowtail dancing over the blossoms or watching the transition of caterpillar to cocoon to butterfly. Whether you create a haven for butterflies and moths or just add a few flowers attractive to butterflies, you will add an enchanting new dimension to your yard. Land development and the widespread use of insecticides and herbicides has endangered many butterflies as their habitats have been degraded or destroyed. Butterflies and moths are significant pollinators, important in the food chain, and major indicators of environmental quality. A refuge for butterflies improves our world environmentally and aesthetically. For the maximum number and variety of butterflies you should plant a "Butterfly Garden." If you don't have the space or inclination to dedicate an entire garden to butterflies, you can make your garden and yard butterfly friendly by applying the same principles and adding some plants throughout your yard. Eventually the very plump caterpillar spins a cocoon or chrysalis for its amazing transformation into an adult butterfly or moth. If you are lucky and observe carefully, you will be able to watch the new adult struggle out of its cocoon, expand and dry its wings, then take its first flight. Flying requires tremendous amounts of energy that the butterfly gets from flower nectar. Butterflies prefer a varied diet and visit a number of different flowers.

Why Travel to the Country to see Butterflies?
Bring them to your yard every single day.
Butterfly Gardening brings the "Wild Kingdom" into your yard and neighborhood. You don't have to watch a Nature Show on The Discovery Channel™ or travel for hours to a state park - you can experience it first-hand in your own butterfly garden. I got involved in Butterfly Gardening through a need to learn about butterflies. As a professional speaker I use the Monarch Butterfly as a metaphor for people changing their lives While I had been a gardener for 25 years, when it came to insects, I was inclined to follow the slogan of "Kill em all and let God sort them out." While I might try to be organic and use more natural means, I viewed caterpillars and other such creatures as pests who just wanted to eat my carefully tended plants. If you like to surround yourself with beautiful plants, flowers and butterflies, and experience action and adventure, bullies and bravery, death and destruction, exploration and excitement, change and constant movement then, butterfly gardening is for you.

Butterfly Gardening
What is butterfly gardening ? Simply put butterfly gardening is the art of growing flowers and plants that will attract these colorful and dainty creatures to your garden. Delight your family and visitors with beautiful butterflies, but be sure to create a safe habitat for them. If you own cats rethink your plans, because it would be a shame to attract these lovely insects to their death. The design your butterfly garden is a matter of personal preference. Typical points to consider are the size of your garden and the types of flowers and plants you want to grow. Pick a style of garden that appeals to you, but ensure it also contains the plants and flowers that appeal to the butterflies you wish to attract. It is important to find out which plants and flowers will attract the species of butterflies. that live in your area. This information can be found at the local library.
To create the kind of environment that they find attractive, you will also need water of some kind. A birdbath will look attractive and keep the butterflies up off the ground, away from stray cats or mischievous puppies. A shallow dish on a post or hung in a tree will do just as well. Some people find it helpful to draw and color a layout of their butterfly gardening plan to see what the finished product would look like. Keep in mind that warm colors like red and orange are flashy and showy. These colors have a greater impact against a strong green background. Cool colors such as blue and purple are soothing and toned down and would work better with a white contrast to create the look of freshness and brightness.

Butterfly gardening
A sunny panorama of colourful flowers animated by a variety of dancing butterflies is an attainable dream for most Canadians. And it doesn't matter if you live downtown, in the suburbs, or in the country. One of the most satisfying ways to watch butterflies is in your own backyard. You have a sense of creating a thing of beauty while helping to conserve a part of our natural heritage. To lift an appropriate phrase from a popular movie, Field of Dreams - "If you build it, they will come." Even the choice of the movie title would be appropriate for a butterfly garden. There are four key requirements to entice and keep butterflies in your garden: nectar sources, larval foodplants, sunshine, and shelter. Many of the flowers already in your garden are probably appropriate to attract adult butterflies. It's a question of careful planning to ensure a variety of flower choices depending on the size and kind of the butterfly you might attract and by having flowering plants that cover all the flight seasons from late spring to early fall. Some of the more common flowering plants in gardens, such as phlox, asters, coneflowers, and lilacs are popular choices for wandering butterflies to visit; these can be grown in any part of Canada. Some other plants are a magnet for butterflies, but can only be grown in the more southerly parts of the country. These include Buddleia ( Buddleia davidii

BUTTERFLY GARDENING:
CREATING SUMMER MAGIC IN YOUR GARDEN
In 1990, the Xerces Society and Smithsonian Institution collaborated to produce this fascinating book on butterflies and moths. Each chapter was contributed by an expert, writing on topics such as night gardens for moths (Dave Winter) and butterflies' vision (Miriam Rothschild). The book also contains garden designs, plant profiles, an extensive bibliography and resource list. How does one improve on such a book? The newly revised edition of Butterfly Gardening includes chapters on beneficial insects and pollination, as well as a current bibliography. Pointing out that each native plant has, on average, twenty invertebrate associates, Melody Mackey Allen (Xerces Society) writes in the preface, "The steady drone of insects at work adds a meditative undersong to summer gardens." This broadening of focus, to include native bees and other pollinators, is very welcome. This review is graciously provided by Claire Hagan Dole. ORDER

Butterfly Gardening

Butterfly gardening has become one of the hottest gardening topics in recent years - there is a great deal of interest in nurturing these colorful, airborne insects and attracting them to the garden. Few outdoor activities are more rewarding and easily available than attracting butterflies to a well-designed garden. Attracting butterflies adds a whole new dimension to gardening - by enticing butterflies into your yard you will not only be able to interact with these living jewels of nature in a way that may not be possible with larger wildlife, in the process you will also learn more about plants and our natural environment.
Buckeye SW Florida is a great place for butterfly gardening - our mild climate and diversity of ecosystems ensures that butterfly gardening can be enjoyed nearly
year round. The possibilities for butterfly gardens are dizzying - they can be simple or complex. Florida is home to around one hundred species of butterflies, not including the skippers of which there are nearly seventy more. In addition to the dazzling kaleidoscope of colors and patterns that may observed, one of the most fascinating things about these gentle creatures is the amazing transformation or metamorphosesis that all butterflies undergo during the amazing butterfly life cycle.
