The packet fiber node may differ from convention RF fiber nodes deployed in a cable network in that the packet fiber node is configured to communicate with the Head End of the network using baseband optical signals rather than frequency modulated optical signals. According to a specific embodiment of the present invention, one or more packet fiber nodes may be deployed in a cable network to service a plurality of different subscriber groups which are serviced by a single, conventional RF fiber node. I was recently trying to troubleshot the famous "infinite
loop" error with an ATI 8500DV video card. In doing so I
disabled ACPI in the BIOS and installed a clean version of
WinXpPro. I have noticed my "Network Utilization" is a
LOT higher than it was when it was enabled, when viewed
    under the Task Manager/Networking.
I have a cable modem and the service is through Comcast.
I have see utilization up to 33%, but on the average runs
around 6-8% depending upon the site I'm downloading from. Before diabeling ACPI it was in the .xx something, almost never ever above 1%. Didn't do anything for the "infinite loop" error, surprise, surprise!

Broadband Connectivity and Motorola Surfboard Cable Modems
Digital cable broadband is the most commonly used type of high speed Internet connection due to the fact that it provides excellent functionality at a reasonable cost. In order to connect your computer to broadband digital cable , you need several pieces of broadband gear. This includes: The most important piece of broadband gear is the cable modem because it receives the broadband signal and redirects it via Ethernet cable to your computer. Cable modems come in all shapes and sizes, and are generally available for rental from your broadband provider at an average cost of $5 per month. Many people choose to forgo the rental, however, and instead choose to purchase a cable modem of their own.

Common Problems and Fixes for Cable Modems
Cable modem issues can be frustrating and time consuming. If you suspect that your Internet connection issues are caused by your cable modem, read below to discover what some of the most common problems are and how you can fix them.
Cable Modem Signal Strength Suspicions
An important thing to keep in mind with cable modems is that even though they’re plugged into the same place you plug your television into, cable modems need a much cleaner signal in order to work properly. To check your cable modem signal , take your television out to the ground block and plug it in. A ground block is used to keep dangerous high volts and currents from entering your wiring by things light nearby lightning strikes and from getting into your structure. If you’re still experiencing problems, then you’ll need to call the cable company. If, however, the problem goes away, then you’re faced with an internal wiring problem. If you live in an apartment, however, you will not have access to the ground block – sometimes your best bet is to call the cable company and get old or faulty wiring replaced.
Various Cable Modem Data Lights Keep Flashing
All cable modems come with a series of lights on the front of the unit. These lights will help you determine whether or not your cable modem is connected properly. If the link LED is turned on and stays on, then your cable modem is connected to the service provider and is online. If, however, the link LED keeps blinking and the US or U2 LED never turns on, then it’s probable that you have a signal level problem between your cable modem and your cable service provider. In this case, you call your cable service provider.
