Southern California Geography
The land we call Southern California is an island, ecologically isolated from the rest of the continent by a combination of geographic and climatic factors. Helen Hunt Jackson once said of Southern California: "It's an island on the land." Carey McWilliams popularized the phrase in his definitive history of the region, Southern California: An Island on the Land . The land's island nature is apparent when you enter it from the north or east. When you round Point Conception and the north-south orientation of California becomes east-west, it is obvious that you have entered a unique geographical province. If you come to Southern California from the east through Cajon Pass or San Gorgonio Pass, the change is immediately evident. Light is softer, the climate more temperate. The land includes seven counties: Santa Barbara, Ventura, Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino and San Diego. Usually, only those parts of San Bernardino, Riverside and San Diego Counties "west of the mountains" are in Southern California, but a case can be made for including all of them and adding Imperial County as well.

Geography of California
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search The geography of California is diverse. There are foggy coastlines, hot deserts, and a fertile central valley all existing in a largely mountainous terrain. The U.S. state of California is home to some of the world's most exceptional trees: the tallest ( coast redwood ), most massive ( Giant Sequoia ), and oldest ( bristlecone pine ). It is also home to both the highest ( Mt. Whitney ) and lowest ( Death Valley ) points in the 48 contiguous states The state is generally divided into Northern and Southern California , although the boundary between the two is not well defined. San Francisco is decidedly a Northern California city and Los Angeles likewise a Southern California one, but areas in between do not often share their confidence in geographic identity. The US Geological Survey defines the geographic center of the state at a point near North Fork, California Earth scientists typically divide the state into eleven distinct geomorphic provinces with clearly defined boundaries. They are, from north to south, the Klamath Mountains , the Cascade Range , the Modoc Plateau , the Basin and Range , the Coast Ranges , the Central Valley , the Sierra Nevada , the Transverse Ranges , the Mojave Desert , the Peninsular Ranges , and the Colorado Desert . Here, the

California geography offers a diverse range of topographical features , from mountains to valleys, deserts to forests. The location of California is in the western side of North America. The geographical coordinates of California position it in the northern as well as the western hemisphere. California Time is decided by the geographical coordinates . The state of California is in the Pacific Time Zone. California is bordered by the Pacific Ocean, the state of Mexico and the states of Arizona, Oregon and Nevada.
The mountain ranges of California geography are one of the most important landforms. The most famous mountain range is Sierra Nevada in the east. The highest point of California, Mt. Whitney, is a part of the Sierra Nevada range. The other mountain ranges of California are the Coastal Mountain Range, the Klamath and the Cascade Mountain Ranges in the north and the Los Ranges Ranges.
The major part of California population is settled in the Central valley. Located between the Sierra Nevada Ranges and the Coastal Mountain Range, the Central valley is one of the largest plain lands of America. Two chief river systems drain the Central valley, the Sacramento and the San Joaquin. The other important river of California is the Colorado. The Lake Tahoe is the only significant one in the

    California Geography
California is the third largest state in the United States (Texas and Alaska are larger land wise) and it is the most populated state. Being such a large geographic area, there are many faces to California, from the lowest point in the United States at Death Valley (-282') to her highest point, Mt. Whitney (14,496', named after a well known State Geologist - the one who battled with John Muir over the formation of Yosemite). Rivers, lakes, canyons, valleys, and sagebrush covered hills spread out in between. It all comes together to make California a state of wonderful contrasts. The lowest point and the highest point are less than 100 miles apart, demonstrating the rapid diversity of this land of contrasts this is shaped by California's geography.
Rainfall - and the plants, animals and humans it influences - are equally diverse. The coastal ranges can measure from 120-160 inches of rain in a year, while the inland desert areas can go for several years without measurable precipitation. Likewise temperatures can range from sub zero at high elevations in the mountains, and up to 134 degrees Fahrenheit in the desert - the hottest recorded temperature in the western hemisphere.
