Nihad Dukhan offers a modern interpretation of the art of Arabic calligraphy.

contemporary arabic calligraphy designs
Arabic calligraphy is the most typical expression of the Islamic spirit. The different classical styles of the Arabic letters offer unlimited possibilities to the artist. The contemporary designs presented here indirectly utilize these styles to create an abstract, yet readable representation of words and provide a postmodern interpretation of the letters. The intent is to cross barriers and touch other languages and cultures for it is said: "The written word is a talisman, and the process of writing is a magic connected not only with the master's technique and skill, but also with his spiritual and moral character." Nihad Dukhan is a Palestinian who grew up in Gaza, holds a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, and is an Associate professor of mechanical engineering at the University of Detroit Mercy. He was extensively trained in the classical styles of Arabic calligraphy. Dr. Dukhan became a master of Arabic calligraphy by receiving his Ijazah from Istanbuls master calligrapher Hasan Celebi (pronounced Chalabi) in Thuluth and Naskh styles in August 2009, after completing eleven years of study. His work in this new form has been exhibited in New York, Washington D.C., Chicago, and San Francisco.
Dr. Dukhan is available for custom work, exhibits, workshops and lectures.

Islamic Calligraphy from a Private Collection
Editor's note: This is one in a series of articles showing objects from a private collection of Islamic art. This article covers highlights of the calligraphy collection.
JB: Many of our readersmyself includedapproach these calligraphic works with little or no background knowledge. Could you please introduce us to the field of calligraphy?

AR: There are two key facts that will help you appreciate the elevated position of calligraphy in the Islamic world: First, specific depictions of the human form are considered sacrilege in Islam . Second, as you learned when we discussed the amulet portion of my collection, verses of the Holy Koran figure significantly in everyday Islamic life.
JB: So, you're suggesting that these factors focused much creative and artistic energy on the written word?

AR: Indeed. And the calligrapher , because he could both delight the eye and feed the soul, held an honored place in the culture . The value of calligraphy was such that it could be readily converted into currency: calligraphic panels traded for their weight in gold
JB: Literally?

Contemporary Calligraphy Calligraphy (from Greek kallos "beauty" + "writing") is the art of beautiful writing (Mediavilla 1996: 17). A contemporary definition of calligraphic practice is "the art of giving form to signs in an expressive, harmonious and skillful manner" (Mediavilla 1996: 18). The story of writing is one of aesthetic evolution framed within the technical skills, transmission speed(s) and materials limitations of a person, time and place (Diringer 1968: 441). A style of writing is described as a hand or alphabet (Johnston 1909: Plate 6). Calligraphy ranges from functional hand lettered inscriptions and designs to fine art pieces where the abstract expression of the handwritten mark may or may not supersede the legibility of the letters (Mediavilla 1996). Classical calligraphy differs from typography and non-classical hand-lettering, though a calligrapher may create all of these; characters are historically disciplined yet fluid and spontaneous, improvised at the moment of writing (Pott 2006 & 2005; Zapf 2007 & 2006). So, many calligraphers are as happy with "jazz" as "classical" for musical analogy and represents differing emphasis between artists. Calligraphy continues to flourish in the forms of wedding and event invitations, font design/ typography, original hand-lettered logo design, commissioned calligraphic art

69. The Islamic World To 1600: The Arts, Learning, And Knowledge (Calligraphy)
An illustrated history from the Department of History, University of Calgary.
http://www.ucalgary.ca/applied_history/tutor/islam/learning/calligraphy.html
The Islamic World to 1600 From the Greek word for "beautiful writing," calligraphy was considered the highest art form in Islam, for several reasons. For one, Muslims believe that Allah used the Arabic language to recite the Qur'an to Muhammad, and for that reason, it has a spiritual meaning for Muslims. Also, using words as artistry avoided the problem of using pictorial images. Whereas decorative writing all but disappeared in Europe with the advent of the printing press, the Islamic world retained it as an art form long after the necessity of writing longhand was removed by modern technology. Calligraphy adorned architecture, decorative arts, coins, jewellery, textiles, weapons, tools, paintings, and manuscripts.

T he Fairbank Calligraphy Society was formed in 1976 to
help encourage and inspire
those interested in calligraphy and italic handwriting. The Society takes its name from the late Alfred Fairbank , an eminent calligrapher and type designer who was largely responsible for the promotion of the use of italic script. His influence on the standards of italic handwriting was widely spread through the thousand teachers he instructed and encouraged to use this beautiful hand. He was honoured by the Queen with the C.B.E. for his service to calligraphy. He has been called "the greatest exemplar and teacher of good writing in modern times". Website Design by:
