The protected area was officially signed into law by Prime Minister Hun Sen. The declaration allows for the permanent protection of the Cardamoms. Government rangers, military police and community monitors are patrolling and enforcing forest and wildlife laws within the area.
The Cardamom Mountains are a high priority for conservationists. Rare species such as the Indochinese tiger, the Asian elephant and the Malaysian sun bear survive there, as do globally threatened species such as the pileated gibbon and the critically endangered Siamese crocodile, which has its only known wild breeding population in the Cardamoms.

Former Khmer Rouge Leader on Trial
Victoria Cho Comments (0) Thirty-five years after the Marxist coup called the Khmer Rouge rose to power in Cambodia and initiated torture practices and widespread massacres, the former leader of one of the coup's largest prisons is on trial by the UN for crimes against humanity. Former prison leader Kaing Guek Eav, or "Duch," recently sat through the testimony of one of the few remaining prison survivors who described life in the Tuol Sleng prison as receiving a few teaspoons of rice porridge for each meal and being shackled in his cell with orders not to move or speak. Watch his testimony here The Khmer Rouge came to power in 1975 and attempted to create a new Cambodia centered around agricultural production and the working class. They systematically "purged" Cambodia of intellectuals, professionals, and other individually minded people that threatened the system. The coup went so far as to arrest people who wore glasses, had traveled, had associated with a former Cambodian government official, or for an unrelated reason. In total, the Khmer Rouge was allegedly responsible for two million deaths. photo: Rules of Tuol Sleng prison featured photo: Cell at Tuol Sleng prison

Cambodian Government Threatens Legitimacy of Khmer Rouge Tribunal
Press Release
Date: May 27, 2009 Contact: Rachel Hart
rhart@sorosny.org

The tribunal, established to try senior members of the Khmer Rouge for crimes against humanity, has charged five suspects in the murder of almost two million people between 1975 and 1979. Recent public warnings by senior officials against additional indictments have added to fears of political meddling. It appears that the government of Cambodia is attempting to block the investigating judges from interviewing certain insider witnesses who hold current positions of power. "The Cambodian government risks undermining the Khmer Rouge Tribunal," said James A. Goldston, executive director of the Open Society Justice Initiative. "The combination of unaddressed corruption and the appearance of political interference is a toxic mix for the court." In March, the long-awaited trial of Kaing Guek Eav (a.k.a. Duch), the commander of the infamous Toul Sleng S-21 Prison where thousands of Cambodians were tortured and killed, began in the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia. The trial provides Cambodians with a unique opportunity to hold Khmer Rouge leaders to account for one of the most devastating episodes in their history.
