Cambodian History Khmer Translation Navigation By David Chandler
Searching for the Truth , July 2009
It's an honor to be here, and it's also a genuine challenge to try to give you a clear idea of Cambodian history up until independence… two thousand years or more in half an hour!
Most people, especially foreigners, think of Cambodian history only in terms of Angkor and modern times, or more specifically Angkor and the Khmer Rouge period.  As I hope to show in my brief talk, Cambodia has much more history than that.
I will be suggesting to you that all of Cambodian history, from the earliest times right up to 2009, is rich, interesting and continuous. You are all the heirs of an extraordinarily long, vibrant and fascinating past, and you can all be very proud of it.
Basically, for my short talk I would divide this enormous stretch of time from the beginning of Cambodian history until 1953, when the country gained its independence fro France into four periods. Each of these can be seen in terms of a major theme or two.

Cambodian History When we want to reflect and discuss on Cambodia’s development especially to learn about Cambodia’s development challenges, as the starting point, we should take Cambodian history into serious consideration. Much evidence shows that the history really has significant influences and impact on the current development process in Cambodia. In particular, in many cases, Cambodian behaviors and practice are strongly determined by their past History. Cambodia history is featured by:
  • A country with a range of natural resources such as sweet water fishes, mines, forest, wild animals etc. However, due to poor governance practice, the country remains the one of the poorest country in the world. A country with significant cultural heritage in South-East Asia. Many people in the world know Cambodia through A ngkor Wat a famous stone temple from the 12 th Century. Around 1080 temples were counted in Cambodia, spreading in different provinces.

In April 1975, Phnom Penh fell to the Khmer Rouge Communists, who renamed the nation Democratic Kampuchea (DK), setting a course of agrarian revolution. Money, markets, formal schooling, Buddhist practices and private property were abolished. The cities were emptied and the masses put to work in the fields. All basic freedoms were denied. Families were split up and collective eating halls and forced marriages were just some of the measures initiated in this experiment in collectivism. Malnutrition, chronic illness, starvation and summary executions all occurred. Some estimate that as many as two million people died. Top
When the Vietnamese and Cambodian PRK forces took Phnom Penh in January of 1979, they found a country in ruins. Factories lacked the implements to resume even basic production. Of approximately 450 doctors who had resided in Cambodia before 1975, only 45 remained. Of 22,000 teachers, no more than 7,000 survived. Officials from previous regimes had, with few exceptions, been exterminated. With a hungry population and few resources, it was expected that starvation would begin to claim lives within months. The Vietnamese-headed PRK government continued to hunt down the Khmer Rouge regime until it handed over power.

Cambodian History
About 2500 years ago the ancestors of the people who live today in Southeast Asia began migrating from their homelands in China and Tibet. For reasons that are unrecorded, many traveled along the rich valleys and plains for several centuries before settling in the region that is now Cambodia. In these pre-historic times, they developed a complex agricultural way of life that centered then, as now, on the growing of rice. They were among the first people to domesticate tubers and legumes, often exporting the yam to the rest of the world. Lasting cultural influences arrived from India whose ideas through Hinduism and Buddhism spread the art of writing, mythologies, and particularly the concept of a despotic God-King. It was the rise of the Khmer empire in the ninth century that elevated the concept of “deva-raja,” the God-King, to its mightiest position in the course of civilization in Southeast Asia. During the reign of Suryavarman II (1113-c.1150), the building of the magnificent temple of Angkor Wat began. At one time, 12.5 million acres of rice fields lay under permanent cultivation, watered by a network of canals and reservoirs stretching for hundreds of miles ( from Columbia History of the World ). Although in many ways the temples and fields were extraordinary achievements, the resources devoted to their building and maintenance were exhausting for the country. And in the end, the Khmer people rejected the governance of “God-Kings” and their ornate ways. The people turned to the teachings of a different form of Buddhism that honored a path of poverty and simplicity. The Cambodian kingdom continued but endured constant threats from its neighbors.

Cambodian music history
A distinction must be made between "music in Cambodia" and "Cambodian music," for the former embraces all ethnic groups within the national boundaries while the latter is limited to the majority, Cambodians. The northern provinces of Rattanakiri and Mundulkiri include hilly plateaus which are home to the Pnorng (Pnorng), an upland Mon-Khmer speaking group, while in the southwest along the Koulen and Cardamom ranges are found the Kuoy (Kui), Por, Samre, and other upland Mon-Khmer speakers. Their musical expression emphasizes gong ensembles, drum ensembles, and free-reed mouth organs with gourd windchests. In the west, around the great lake (Tonle Sap) live Cham, Chinese, Vietnamese, and other lowland minorities, but the extent to which these groups maintain their traditional musics is not largely known. Cambodian music flourished in both court and village settings, some associated with specific functions, others with entertainment. In villages weddings are celebrated with kar music, communication with spirits is accompanied by arakk music, and entertainments include

Pre-history
Funsan Kingdom (1st century BC)
The Funan Kingdom is seen as the important first Cambodian civilization (1st century BC). The kingdom was strongly influenced by Indian culture and Indian influences are observeable in its culture, art, and political system. The Funan Kingdom introduced an alphabetical system, religions and architectural styles were also Indian contributions to the Funan Kingdom. The Funan Kingdom influenced a commercial culture in the Mekong Delta (1st-6th centuries AD).
Kymer Empire (6th-13th century AD)
Dark Ages
Camboduan authors describe the "Dark Ages" of Cambodian history (13-14th centurues). Thai and Vietnamese rulers gradually encroached upon Cambodia (15th-19th centuries). Get a brief outline of the journey that Cambodia has under gone as a nation over the years in our historical timeline of Cambodia.
1st-6th Century Cambodia was first inhabited by the Funan Kingdom right from the first century BC. At the time Cambodia was under a strong influence of the Indian culture, religion and political trends. Archeological discoveries have established the existence of commercial societies between the Mekong Delta that existed from the first up till the sixth century. 9th-15th Century The period starting from the ninth century to the early fifteenth century saw a mass scale construction of temples under the rule of Jayavarman and his successors. During the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries Cambodia was greatly restricted by the over imposing power of the prevailing Thai kingdom. The region also suffered in a war against the dominant Thai kingdom over the region of Angkor. Another reason on which the lack of progress during those centuries is blamed is the adoption of Buddhism. The dharma brought about a revolutionary change in the social structure of Cambodia which was not necessarily considered to be for the better. These long years of Cambodian history are vaguely documented and are as such considered to be the dark ages of the nation. The worst was yet to follow. Cambodia suffered at the hands of the Thais and Vietnamese who invaded the region wreaking havoc and destruction. The wars left Cambodia totally destroyed and it was not until King Nordom managed to sign a treaty to stop the hostilities against Cambodia that some sort of peace was restored in the region.

Cambodian History Cambodia has a very long and fascinating history. No written hisitory gives a complete account of where they came from and what they did. According to ancient legends, a Naga prince and princess were teh ancient ancestors of the Khmer kingdom which was originally a Hindu settlement. By the 600's AD, the Khmer had begun to establish a vast empire throughout Southeast Asia. It was during the years of the empire that the famous temples such as Angkor Wat were built. As the empire began to deteriorate, the Khmer people struggled with conflict with neighboring peoples like the Vietnamese. Eventually, Cambodia, along with the rest of the people in the region became a colony of France and part of French Indochina.. Cambodia gained independence from France on November 9, 1953. The capital city was established in Phnom Penh, and Cambodia re-established their ancient monarchy. Governing a nation has not been easy, and the country has faced many changes in government and many difficult times. The most dramatic of these times has been during the 1970's when the country was controlled by a group of radical Communist guerillas called the Khmer Rouge. This was an extremely violent, bloody time in history, and many innocent Cambodians lost their lives. Cambodia has been restored to a Constitutional monarchy , but Communism still influences the government in many ways.
