Cameroon Culture Cameroon has distinct regional cultural, religious, and political traditions as well as ethnic variety. The division of the country into British- and French-ruled League of Nations mandates after World War I created Anglophone and Francophone regions. The English-speaking region consists of the Southwest and Northwest provinces, where Pidgin English (Wes Cos) is the lingua franca and English is taught in school. The educational system and legal practices derive from those of England. The French-speaking region consists of the remaining eight provinces, where French is the lingua franca, the French school system is used, and the legal system is based on the statutory law of continental Europe. This region is dominant in numbers and power. Tension between the two regions increased after the introduction of a multiparty political system in the 1990s. The peoples of the Southwest province had less hierarchical systems of governance and social organization. The British appointed warrant chiefs to aid their colonial rule, and in many instances the population rallied behind those chiefs in the postcolonial period. The peoples of the Southwest province include the Bakweri, who live along the slopes of Mount Cameroon. The Bakweri practice rites of healing and initiation in associations of spirit mediums that distinguish between male and female roles and between village and bush.

Cameroon : Culture
Each major ethnic group of the nation has developed its own culture. The vigorous rhythms played on the drums by the people of the southern forest region contrast with the flute music of northern Cameroonians. In the Adamawa area, the Muslim Fulani produce elaborately worked leather goods and ornate calabashes and the Kirdi and the Matakam of the western mountains produce typical types of pottery. The powerful masks of the Bali, which represent elephants' heads are used in ceremonies for the dead, and the statuettes of the Bamileke are carved in human and animal figures. The Tikar people are famous for beautifully decorated brass pipes, the Ngoutou people for two-faced masks, and the Bamum for smiling masks. L'Institut Français d'Afrique Noire - French Institute of black Africa maintains a library in Douala that specializes in the sociology, ethnology, and history of Africa. Of the several museums, the Diamare and Maroua Museum has anthropological collections relating to the Sudanese peoples, and the Cameroon Museum of Douala exhibits objects of prehistory and natural history. Cameroon - culture
Expert: Emmanuel Nfor - 6/8/2004 Question in what culture/country/tribe in africa is a gap in one's mouth considered a form of beauty? Answer Please I'm not quite sure of what you mean by a gap in one's mouth but i can presume that you mean a gap between the teeth . If this is what you mean then let me say that in Cameroon this use to be considered a form of beauty . This created a situation where by a lot of people even modified their dental formular to have an artificial gap between the teeth typically between incisors or the front cutting-edged teeth ; elsewhere it would rather be considered a form of ugliness. The prestige attached to this phenomenon has declined significantly over time . Dentists are certainly the the highest losers with this change of attitude and they certainly can testify this better . It was popular amongs a range of cultures in Black Africa but i can not tell the extent to which it was .Wether it is still highly considered a form of beauty in some parts of Africa I also can't tell. Please thanks for your question and hope you are satisfied , if not wholy at least partly .

Cameroon Culture, Map, Flag, Tourist Places
Cameroon is one of the most diverse countries in Africa and oft referred to as "Africa in miniature". In Cameroom lays the highest mountain in West Africa and last but not least Cameroon is full of wonderful friendly and warmhearted people. Cameroon is a Central African nation on the Gulf of Guinea, bordered by Nigeria, Chad, the Central African Republic, the Republic of Congo, Equatorial Guinea, and Gabon. Mount Cameroon (13,350 ft), is the highest elevation in the country. The main rivers are the Benue, Nyong, and Sanaga. After World War I, the League of Nations gave the French a mandate over 80% of the area, and the British 20% adjacent to Nigeria. After World War II, when the country came under a U.N. trusteeship in 1946, self-government was granted, and the Cameroon People's Union emerged as the dominant party by campaigning for reunification of French and British Cameroon and for independence. France set up Cameroon as an autonomous state in 1957, and the next year its legislative assembly voted for independence by 1960. In 1959 a fully autonomous government of Cameroon was formed under Ahmadou Ahidjo. Cameroon became an independent republic on Jan. 1, 1960. In 1961 the southern part of the British territory joined the new Federal Republic of Cameroon and the northern section voted for unification with Nigeria. The president of Cameroon since independence, Ahmadou Ahidjo, was replaced in 1982 by the prime minister, Paul Biya. Both administrations were characterized by authoritarian rule.

    Cameroon
Compared with other African countries, Cameroon enjoys political and social stability. This has permitted the development of agriculture, roads, railways, and large petroleum and timber industries. Nevertheless, large numbers of Cameroonians live in poverty as subsistence farmers. Power lies firmly in the hands of the president, Paul Biya, and his Cameroon People's Democratic Movement party. Fulani soldiers founded the Adamawa Emirate in the north in the 19th century, and various ethnic groups of the west and northwest established powerful chiefdoms and fondoms.
