Main article: Canadian Confederation In the 1860s, the British were concerned with the possibility of an American assault on Canada in the wake of the American Civil War . Britain also feared that American settlers might expand to the north, into land that was technically British but which was sparsely settled. There were also problems with raids into Canada launched by the Fenian Brotherhood , a group of Irish Americans who wanted to pressure Britain into granting independence to Ireland. Canada was already essentially a self-governing colony since the 1840s, and Britain no longer felt it was worth the expense of keeping it as a colony. Both sides would, it was felt, be better off politically and economically if Canada was independent. These factors led to the first serious discussions about real political union in Canada. However, there were internal political obstacles to overcome first. The Province of Canada had little success in keeping a stable government for any period of time; the Tories, led by

Turks and Caicos move to join Canada
By Christopher Walsh
Apr 25th, 2004 In recent news, Nova Scotia's parliament voted to offer a Caribbean nation, Turks and Caicos, to join their province if they were to pursue political and economical union between Canada. Although it's official, no talks have commenced on the topic.
Canada has had several talks with the Caribbean country, which is a British colony, all of which have led to absolutely nothing. The main factors on Canada's part has been it's unwillingness to be seen as a neocolonist. The Caribbean islands have been pursuing a union for almost 100 years, and it has popped up yet once again.
The notion started in 1917 when Prime Minister Borden remarked it would be a good idea to annex the country. It popped up again in 1974 when a Canadian Member of Parliament introduced a private members bill to study a relationship between Turks and Caicos and Canada. At that time, Turks and Caicos was going through an election. Canada decided it would best be put off until their election was completed. Time passed and nothing happened.

The library at Yale had the first two volumes.
I came across his books at ancestry.ca .  Under Passenger and Immigration Lists Index, 1500-1900's.  I typed in my relative and a few hits came back, one of them being Donald Whytes book(and volume #).  It even told me the page number the record was on.  This leads me to believe that the book is transcibed via ancestry.ca, and if there are 4 volumes, you would get the hit back stating which one.

Ryan’s entry on "Fisheries: 1800-1900" in the Encyclopedia of Newfoundland and Labrador [hereafter cited as ENL ], Vol. II: 144-55 together with his superb analysis of "The Newfoundland Salt Cod Trade in the Nineteenth Century," in J. Hiller & P. Neary (eds.), Newfoundland in the Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries: Essays in Interpretations (Toronto: University of Toronto Press, 1980), pp. 40-66, provide as useful an introduction to the complex interactions between productivity, demographic growth, and market conditions as one can find. Ryan provides a more detailed analysis of the fish trade in two recent works; the whole trade is analyzed in Fish Out of Water: The Newfoundland Saltfish Trade, 1814-1914

Emigration records
There are unfortunately very few records in The National Archives of Scotland (NAS) which list names of emigrants. The Colonial Office, based in London, was responsible for emigration in the 19th century and its records are held by The National Archives (London) (TNA). They also hold the surviving outward passenger lists from 1890.

This will include a family group sheet and brief biographical sketch of each Johnston settler whether they arrived from Ireland, Scotland or the United States. Emphasis is being placed on date of birth and point of origin. Currently there are over 100 Johnston family group sheets in varying degrees of completion, many of whom hail from Ireland. This project is being done with a view to publication. If you have Johnston ancestors who settled in Upper Canada chances are that I've been working on your family. Any input is welcome.
