Canadian churches weigh in on U.S. health care
    Presbyterian Record Oct, 2009
[ILLUSTRATION OMITTED] As American media and lobbyists pointed northward to criticize proposed changes to the U.S. heath care system, the Canadian Council of Churches defended Canadian health care, calling it a system guided by "affinity with the love of neighbour." In letters to three of the U.S.'s largest church bodies, the CCC suggested health care advocacy is directly related to "God's call to discipleship" and Canadian churches have played a role in shaping Canada's system. "Over the years, we've had all kinds of conversations here through our ecumenical heath care network and with the Canadian government, and we thought we had experience and wisdom to share if it would be helpful to our American brothers and sisters," said Rev. Dr. Karen Hamilton, general secretary of the CCC. "We believe Canada is well-served by the kind of health care we have, especially if it continues to make changes that churches believe are important for justice and equity." The letter was directed to the National Council of Churches, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops and the National Association of Evangelicals.

Canadian churches face major decline - news from ekklesia
By staff writers 8 Dec 2005 Canadian churches face major decline Churches in the UK and other parts of Europe are not the only ones facing decline, as African and Asian Christianity continues to expand and the centre of gravity of the global faith migrates south. In Canada some denominations may soon disappear completely, a report presented to the Anglican Church of Canada's House of Bishops suggests. Can West News Agency and Ecumenical News International report that Mr Keith McKerracher, a retired marketing expert who serves as a church advisor, has published data which shows that between 1961 and 2001, Anglican numbers plunged from 1.36 million to 642,000, a decline of 53 per cent. In fact Canadaís Anglican Church is losing some 13,000 members each year. At this rate, says the report, it is ìfacing extinction by the middle of this centuryî.

reports on record number of national church bodies New York, March 5, 2007 The National Council of Churches' Yearbook of American and Canadian Churches issued its 75th edition this month. Widely considered the nation's oldest and most reliable source of church membership and growth trends, the 2007 edition reports on a record number of 224 national church bodies. The reports include brief histories, leadership and headquarters information, and ranks the 25 largest churches by membership. The 439-page paperback Yearbook is also accessible on the Internet using a pass code printed on the inside back cover. The information in the yearbook will be updated online twice during the year. In addition, a compact disc exists of data dating from 1916 through 2000. "We at the Yearbook are pleased to take our place in this important task of annually capturing a snapshot of American religious life," says the Rev. Dr. Eileen W. Lindner, editor of the yearbook since 1998. Lindner is also Deputy General Secretary of the NCC for Research and Planning. The statistics in the 2007 Yearbook, collected by the churches in 2005 and reported in 2006, "reflect the continued overall vitality of church participation, and account for the religious affiliation of almost 166 million Americans," Lindner said.

(Photo courtesy of Suncor) EDMONTON - Canadian Church leaders are preparing to bring the voice of Christian faith to bear on controversies surrounding the Alberta tar sands.
Following meetings May 21-27 with people who work and live in northern Alberta, church leaders intend to lobby the federal government for tighter environmental regulation of the huge and controversial source of energy.
The 17-member delegation was organized by the ecumenical social justice coalition Kairos. It visited northern Alberta to hear from the people and interested groups with an eye to developing a “testimony or statement.”
“We need a strategy to shape change,” said Mary Corkery, Kairos’ executive director. “We are not calling for stopping this kind of development. We are saying that Canada needs a plan.”

Random Thoughts from a Week in Atlantic Canada
November 2, 2010 in Canadian Community Joy Leadership Summit by Scott Cochrane 3 comments Wrapping up a week connecting with church leaders, I’ve jotted down a few reflections…
  • Looking for a sterling example of a leadership transition? Check out the baton pass from Ted Yuke to Russ Conway at Rock Church in Halifax, Nova Scotia. When you think of innovative churches, you might not think of one that looks like this. But this is Brunswick Street Baptist Church in the heart of Fredericton, New Brunswick, and they are doing some cutting edge missional ministry for the homeless. Atlantic Baptist University in Moncton recently changed their name to Crandall University . But that was just the start of the innovations for this landmark school. Now they’re talking about taking advantage of the fact that the Global Leadership Summit in Canada will now be in late September. The dream? To leverage the Summit as part of the school curriculum. One of the most effective ministry partnerships I’ve ever seen is between two leaders from different churches, different denominations and different generations. But what Laurel Buckingham of

Canada has a wide mix of religions. The country on the other hand, has no official religion. Canada's political culture supports religious pluralism and not favors any religion. Although the above is true, most people reported that they are Christians. The Christian believes are echoed in the way that most Canadians are living.
When you are leaving your country, the fear that there will be no place where you can worship, is always on your mind. Your faith and believes are part of you and needs to be addressed in your new homeland. NCC 2008 Yearbook: Church Health Ministries Abound The venerable yearbook, widely regarded as the most reliable source of church membership and growth trends since its beginning in 1916, is also reporting this year on the membership statistics, leadership and histories of 224 national church bodies. The 2008 Yearbook features an article, "When Did We See Thee Sick? Congregations Respond," that reports the results of a groundbreaking NCC survey of more than 6,000 American congregations. The article, by the Rev. Dr. Eileen W. Lindner, editor of the Yearbook, reveals that churches spend a significant amount of time, energy and money in the ministries of health care. According to the Congregational Health Ministry Survey, conducted by the NCC with support from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, about 70 percent of responding churches provide direct health services, with 65 percent offering health education programs within their community. The survey defines direct services as provision of medical care to individuals by trained health care professionals. "It is not surprising to find that churches see health care as a part of their faith mission and mandate," said Lindner, who supervised the survey. "The results of this survey confirm a higher energy for health care than we might have thought, however, and show that effective health care ministries are being developed by congregations of all sizes to meet the urgent needs of their communities."

Courage for Canadian Churches
By Nathan Jones Did you know that churches and Christian organizations in Canada are not allowed to say anything against homosexuality from their pulpits and periodicals? It's true. And not just Canada, but Sweden, Australia and the United Kingdom also have similar laws. These are not countries ruled by dictatorships, but countries very similar to the United States in its freedoms of speech, religion and democratic processes. These countries are now ruled by the PC (political correctness) police. America may not be far behind in restricting what is said from the pulpit, for such intimidation to the pulpit is indeed alive and well in the United States. For example, to mix the pulpit and elections hasn't been allowed in the United States since 1954 when then-senator Lyndon Baines Johnson offered an amendment to restrict nonprofit organizations, including churches, from endorsing or opposing political candidates. Should a church violate that restriction, the IRS comes down on the church with threats to revoke their non-profit status. Adding a so-called "hate crimes" restriction to the American pulpit is not far-fetched or far away in a society that increasingly calls evil "good." My heart has been burdened since hearing about the plight of our brothers and sisters in Christ just over the open border who would face jail time, fines and revoking of their non-profit status for caring enough to tell the truth. The truth they share is that sexual perversion slowly and painfully kills its practitioners, creates deadly epidemics, produces anarchy destroying the fabric of society, and disturbs the Creator who lovingly created each of us with function and purpose. The preachers are not being punished for hating or discriminating, but for loving and caring.
