What's for Dinner?
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia   (Redirected from What's for Dinner Jump to: navigation search For a certain King of Hyrule that made this phrase famous, see King Harkinian What's for Dinner? was a long-running Canadian cooking show with humorous overtones that initially aired on Life Network and was later syndicated around the world. The series started in 1995 and aired for several seasons. The series was hosted by Ken Kostick , a chef and cookbook author from Winnipeg , along with Mary Jo Eustace. Kostick, inspired by the American sitcom Home Improvement and similar "behind the scenes" comedy programs, had come up with the idea of a sitcom built around a genuine cooking program, much like Home Improvement occasionally featured genuine products and tips mixed in with its comedy. The idea of producing a sitcom was eventually dropped; instead, What's for Dinner? developed into a humour-based cooking show. Mary Jo Eustace , a Canadian actress, fashion model, singer and trained sous-chef who stood a good foot taller than the diminutive Kostick, was hired to solo host the series, but when it was discovered Eustace and Kostick had good on-camera chemistry, it was decided to make the show a duo act. The appeal of the series was not so much in the dishes prepared, but in the comedic banter—and, quite frequently, barbs—thrown back and forth between the two hosts. Kostick in particular found himself acting as "

G.C.- What is "Modern Canadian" cooking? D.C. - Modern Canadian cooking is really a beautiful combination of diverse cultures present in Canada. Canada is such a young country and our population grows daily. With this rise of new cultural diversity comes new food, flavors, cooking methods, textures and rituals. Canadian cuisine is being developed as we speak. As a chef, I try to take in all these new experiences and ideas, and create a new style of cuisine.
G.C. - What influences this style? D.C. - Many things influence this style: new ingredients, new cooking methods, different presentations and of course, the different cultural cooking rituals
G.C. - Where do your ingredients come from? D.C. - A lot of my ingredients come from all over. Because of some of the new ingredients we are using, we are constantly trying to research them and locate them. At times we have to order a certain ingredient, say from Spain, because it is not sold in North America.
G.C. - What's the coolest ingredient that you use right now?

Taichung's Canadian Cooking
By Douglas Habecker
It's almost nine o'clock in the evening and Chris Johnson is staring at the salad and appetizers buffet with a slight frown. "Just a moment, please. We need more of this one," he says, gesturing at a particular plate, and disappears into a nearby door. Seconds later, he reappears, satisfied that everything is in order. Such moments aptly illustrate the commitment to quality of The Landis Taichung Hotel's new executive chef. Since he started working on January 27, the 32-year-old Canadian has kept himself very busy, revising menus, overseeing food festivals, catering, getting to know his staff and running the day-to-day operations. On top of all that, he has been adjusting to his first overseas living experience, settling into a new apartment with his wife and daughter and attempting to learn a little about the country around him.

Portuguese Canadian Lunches Although I was born in Portugal, I lived my whole life in Canada and my parents began to incorporate Canadian cooking into the Portuguese foods they knew and loved and managed to do it without ever losing the Portuguese flavor of the dish. Here are some of my memories of such food marriages. School days were always packed lunches but they were filling. Sardine sandwiches, sugar sandwiches, peanut butter, fried fish, sliced eggs or quince jam, sliced thick. Sometimes it was fried egg mixed with chorico slices or just plain fried chorico. There was fruit or an occasional slice of cake or cookies and juice or milk supplied by the school. Saturdays were different. Then we were always together and so our meals became more elaborate.Red snapper with onions and potatoes covered with sliced tomatoes, herbs and olive oil . Boiled cod, potatoes and rapini dressed with

      canadian cooking overseas
hi all......... need a couple of suggestions. i will be visting friends overseas and it is very uncommon to see an oven there. odviously, there are many ingredients not available there that we use here. i can get basic veg (potato, onion, squash, tomato, possibly celery) and very few meat options (chicken legs, cheap cuts of beef........no minced/ groud beef, fish) anything else in the country i am travelling to is very expensive and diffcult to find. my question is? what can i cook for my hosts one night that would be uniquely canadian/north american? i want to do something interesting and new for them so i need something that can be cooked on a stovetop with minimal kitchen gagets and basic ingredients. i can bring the spices with me.
