Eduardo De Filippo. The Nativity Scene. A play translated by Anthony Molino with Paul Feinberg. (Guernica, 1997).
This translation of De Filippo’s Natale in Casa Cupiello is important because it adds to the list a significant example of Italy’s cultural range. Rich in the iconography of Italian culture, The Nativity Scene brings to us that very special object around which Christmas festivities gravitate. The presepe is representative of the collaborative effort that is required to move forward with hope every year. This is a ritual in which many of us have participated, and it is a ritual that too many have left behind. It is this message of renewal and reconfirmation of faith in the capacity of others and ourselves to go on that is particularly significant in the Neapolitan context. And it is also here that the play finds its universal appeal.
Ben Morreale. The Loss of the Miraculous. Novel. (Guernica, 1997).

Canada Culture
.: Canada .: Geography .: People .: Government ... Pierre Trudeau 's federal government adopted multiculturalism as an official policy in 1971 in the aftermath of the Royal Commission on Bilingualism and Biculturalism conducted under the government of Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson Due to its colonial past, Canadian culture has historically been heavily influenced by British and French cultures and traditions. In more modern times, Canadian culture is now greatly influenced by American culture, due to the proximity and the migration of people, ideas, and capital. Amidst this, Canadian culture has developed unique characteristics. In many respects, a more robust and distinct Canadian culture has developed in recent years, partially because of the civic nationalism that pervaded Canada in the years prior to and following the Canadian Centennial in 1967, and also due to a focus by the federal government on programs to support culture and the arts.

Identification. The name Canada is derived from the Iroquoian word kanata, which means village. Location and Geography. A final differentiation is between urban and rural. Local cultural identity is often marked by expressions of contrasting values in which rural residents characterize themselves as harder working, more honest, and more deeply committed to community cooperation, in contrast to urban dwellers Canada who are characterized by rural residents as greedy, dishonest, arrogant, and self-interested. Urban dwellers express their own identities as more modern and forward looking, more sophisticated, and more liberal in their overall social values, and perceive rural residents as conservative, overdependent on outmoded traditions, unsophisticated, and simple minded. This distinction is most explicit in Quebec, but also plays a key role in political, social, and cultural contentions in Ontario. Demography.

Jamie James explains how South Asian writers, now exiled in Canada, are re-creating their former worlds. Authors discussed include Rohinton Mistry, M.G. Vassanji, and Shyam Selvadurai.

A P R I L 2 In accomplished stories and novels South Asian writers who are exiles in Canada are re-creating the worlds they left behind by Jamie James (The online version of this article appears in two parts. Click here to go to part two. S OME of the finest English-language fiction of our time is being written in Canada. Perhaps the most famous of that country's authors is Michael Ondaatje, the author of The English Patient, who was born in Ceylon, now Sri Lanka. A writer whose work deserves to be as well known as Ondaatje's is Rohinton Mistry. One of the most important events in my life as a reader was my discovery of A Fine Balance (1995), Mistry's second novel, which is set in an unnamed city that appears to be Bombay, the author's native city, in 1975. This was the year that Mistry emigrated to Toronto and the year that Indira Gandhi proclaimed a state of emergency, setting herself up as India's virtual dictator. The novel has four major characters: two tanners, uncle and nephew, untouchables who flee the caste violence in their village to make a better life for themselves as tailors; a proud middle-aged widow who defies her family in her determination to remain independent; and a dreamy young man from the mountains whose family sends him to study in the city. The four of them meet on page eight, and their lives intertwine with gathering dramatic intensity as the city descends into chaos in a narrative of superb Chekhovian irony spiced with earthy wit. Imagine four fully formed characters! Most of the new American and British novels I see have only one character to whom things happen a shadowy stand-in for the author.
