The #1 selling genealogy software for 10 years! About the Data This index helps you locate a particular individual at a specific place and point in time. In general, each record in the index tells you about an event, giving the individual's name, and usually also the year and location where the event took place. Each record typically also tells you what the source of this information is, so you can refer to the original materials for more details about the individual. Knowing a name, location, and year, may help you find your ancestor in other records of genealogical value, which are not necessarily included in this index. (Note that some records refer to entire families rather than individuals, and that many of the events are "Living," meaning that the original record is a census, land record, family history, or other item that does not refer to a specific lifetime event.) This data was provided by The Genealogical Research Library, Inc. of Toronto, Canada. Many of the source documents are available in their collection.

The French wanted to establish colonies in Canada in order to be able to further the fur trading. The leaders of France simply wanted to claim the land their explorers had found as their own. The best way they could consider to do so was to have people relocate to the area and start a new life.

For the Irish, Canada offered them a chance at a new life. They were tired of the famine and poor quality of life in Ireland. Getting on a ship heading for Canada offered them the only glimpse of hope they had in front of them. More Irish went to Canada than French or English due to the fact that they generally had a decent life where they were from. Canada was unknown and could be a risk. For the Irish though it was certainly a risk worth taking.
Many different families will find that their heritage has some link to Canada down the line of ancestors. Learning how to make a family tree can be a rewarding experience. Some of them originated there while others chose to migrate to the area. Regardless, they all helped to shape the culture of Canada. They influence that the had continue to be a part of the Canadian legacy today.

    Canadian Genealogy Centre Opens
by E.B. Lapointe Ottawa - The Canadian Genealogy Centre of the Library and Archives of Canada had its official opening at the annual Gene-O-Rama genealogy conference on 29 March, 2003 at Ben Franklin Place in Ottawa, the country's capital city.* A spokesperson for the centre is quoted in the accompanying press release as saying that "The Canadian Genealogy Centre Web site is an online centre that will provide access to all genealogical resources in Canada." The centre had its origins in the fall of 2002, with a conference in Ottawa-Gatineau's National Capital Region, when the National Library and National Archives of Canada gathered genealogical experts together to exchange ideas of what should constitute a centre to study Canadian genealogy and help bring it closer to people researching their ancestors in Canada. The result is the bilingual Canadian Genealogy Centre/Centre Canadien de genealogie at http://www.genealogy.gc.ca . Already on the website, under the title of "Directory of Resources," are searchable databases of websites such as the selected database of people, " immigrants at Grosse-Ile Quarantine Station, 1832-1937," a very important part of Canada's history. Coming soon is the database of "The Naturalization List and the Canada Gazette (1915-1932)," a name index developed by the Jewish Genealogical Society of Ottawa and the Jewish Genealogical Society of Montreal.
