Posted on February 16, 2010 A frame from B.C. school video, The Great Canadian Gold Rush of 2010 — a Winter Games tribute song. Watch it below.
Who: Kelowna’s Bankhead Elementary music teacher John Vesterinen and the school’s Bulldog Choir and Orff-Ans musicians.
[The Orff Method is a way of teaching children about music that engages their mind and body through a mixture of singing, dancing, acting and the use of percussion instruments (e.g., xylophones, metallophones, glockenspiels). ]
What: Mr. Vesterinen has written a Vancouver 2010 Winter Games tribute song called “The Great Canadian Gold Rush of 2010.” It’s loosely based on the Bob and Doug McKenzie 1980’s hit, “Great White North.”
Q: How did you get the inspiration to write “The Great Canadian Goldrush of 2010”?
John Vesterinen: I awoke from a dream at 4:00 a.m. Dec. 22nd with the song title in my head and a few verses. I didn't dare go back to bed perchance the midnight muse of lyrics and title would be lost so I got up and jotted down the gist of my song! I finished it the next day.
Q: What educational value do you think the Olympic Games can offer to students?

Discovery Claim on Bonanza Creek is seen in August 2009. In August 1896, a party led by Keish ( Skookum Jim Mason ), a member of the Tagish First Nations , headed north, down the Yukon River from the Carcross area, looking for his sister Kate and her husband George Carmack . The party consisted of Skookum Jim, his cousin, known as Dawson Charlie (or sometimes Tagish Charlie), and his nephew Patsy Henderson. After meeting up with George and Kate, who were fishing for salmon at the mouth of the Klondike River, they ran into Nova Scotian Robert Henderson who had been mining gold on the Indian River, just south of the big dike. Henderson told George Carmack about where he was mining and that he did not want any "Siwashes" (Indians) near him.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search For other uses, see Gold rush (disambiguation) A gold rush is a period of feverish migration of workers into the area of dramatic discovery of gold . Major gold rushes took place in the 19th century in Oceania, Brazil, Canada (especially the Yukon), South Africa, and the United States (especially Georgia, California, and western states), while smaller gold rushes took place elsewhere. In the 19th century and early 20th century, there were a series of major gold rushes. The permanent wealth that resulted was distributed widely because of reduced migration costs and low barriers to entry. While gold mining itself was unprofitable for most diggers and mine owners, some people made large fortunes, and the merchants and transportation facilities made large profits. The resulting increase in the world's gold supply stimulated global trade and investment. Historians have written extensively about the migration, trade, colonization, and environmental history associated with gold rushes. Gold rushes were typically marked by a general buoyant feeling of a "free for all" in income mobility, in which any single individual might become abundantly wealthy almost instantly, as expressed in the

Gold was discovered on Aug. 17, 1896, near the confluence of the Klondike and Yukon rivers in western Yukon territory. By 1897 up to 30,000 prospectors had arrived in the newly created towns of Skagway and Dyea, jumping-off points to the Canadian goldfields several hundred miles away. Many of the seekers died from malnutrition, hypothermia, or avalanches along the route. The Klondike gold rush was short-lived and had essentially ended by 1899,and soon prospectors began moving on to Alaska. The Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park in Skagway commemorates the gold rush.

Introduction: Canada, the Unknown Country
No one knows my country, neither the stranger nor its own sons.
Bruce Hutchison
F or academics, journalists and fiction writers alike, Canada is a subject of constant fascination and study. Bruce Hutchison, a prominent newspaper editor and author, once described Canada as "The Unknown Country." To a large extent, Canada, with its complex weave of languages, cultures and regions, is a geopolitical conundrum.
Mythologies and stereotypes abound concerning the Canadian landscape and people. To outsiders, Canada is a land of snow, hockey, Mounties, wildlife, untamed spaces, maple trees, peacekeepers, Tim Horton doughnut shops, universal health care, Quebec separatism, and congenial, reserved people (except, perhaps, for that redheaded rebel
