General Stores of Canada:
Merchants and Memories
By Rae Fleming
208 page book/over 300 pictures
Filled to the brim with groceries and clothing, these stores had so much more to offer. They were the centre of the community, where people told stories, shared news and advice, and even borrowed money. In General Stores of Canada: Merchants and Memories, R.B. Fleming explores our relationship with the general store, once an institution at the heart of every Canadian town. Indeed, many towns and cities were first established by a store, Quebec and Vancouver among them. The book explores the eclectic architecture of general stores, and it ponders their history, from the barter of butter and eggs to the occasional murder.

Catch the Scouts Canada Kindness Wave: Youth Organization Launches First National Good Turn Week
OTTAWA March 5 /CNW Telbec/ - It will be an event not quite like any other in Canadian history. From March 7 - 13, 2010, Scouts Canada will celebrate its first National Good Turn Week, and Scouts across the nation are totally pumped. In every province, city and town, Canadian Scouts will participate. Each will do a Good Turn, and pass on an official wristband to the recipient. Then, that person may do a Good Turn for someone else; paying forward both the good turn and the wristband. Like a wave across the country, hundreds of acts of kindness from the organization's youth will gather momentum, flooding the airwaves, the internet and the hearts of Canadians. Last week, a national email blast launching the project was sent to Scouting's 100,000 youth and adult members. Almost immediately, replies began to hit the organization's email boxes - the responses were clear: kids can't wait to get started with their Good Turns.
