About Rob
Is Robert J. Sawyer a Part of Canadian Literature?
In May 1999, I was approached by a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of English at the University of Western Ontario, who was preparing a paper on the relationship between Canadian SF and Canadian Literature. By Canadian literature, he said he meant:
  • the tradition of Canlit and its canon, from Wacousta and Roughing it in the Bush through the Confederation Poets, Frederick Philip Grove Hugh MacLennan Mordecai Richler Margaret Laurence Margaret Atwood Michael Ondaatje , and more recent writers such as Nino Ricci Anne Michaels , etc.;
  • the literary institutions that support that tradition (publishers, the Canada Council for the Arts, literary journals, Canadian Literature scholarly journals, university English departments and high school Canlit courses, etc.); and
  • the contemporary [Canlit] writing community
The academic asked within that definition of Canadian Literature:
  • How I saw my relationship to Canadian Literature?

Environmental Concern Embracing Canadian Literature This site provides resources for the promotion of Canadian Literature so that our students may see themselves and their experiences in some of the books that they read. "The selection and quality of Canadian books for children and young adults has never been better. Canadian children's books are internationally acclaimed, and many publishers have significant export and rights sales in other countries. Yet over the past decade or more the number of Canadian books in our own school libraries has been declining - mirroring the declining numbers of teacher-librarians, cutbacks in school library resource budgets, weakened school library programs, and reduced school library hours.
For Canadian publishers of books for children and young adults, school libraries have been the foundation of their market, and sales to school libraries have dropped significantly over the past decade. The Association of Canadian Publishers commissioned in-depth cross-Canada research to explore these changes in the school library market in order to provide information and perspectives for marketing and awareness building for Canadian books in school libraries.
This report identifies influences affecting Canadian book selection and book selection in general; identifies needs and challenges for marketing Canadian books; identifies strategies and resources for awareness building about the importance of school libraries and identifies opportunities and directions for marketing Canadian books for schools."

Early Canadian Writing Although Canadian writing began as an imitative colonial literature, it has steadily developed its own national characteristics. Because of the huge immigrations, first of New England Puritans from 1760 on and later of American Loyalists during the Revolution, Canadian literature followed U.S. models almost until the confederation in 1867. Before 1800 the rigors of pioneering left little time for the writing or the appreciation of literature. The only notable works were journals, such as that of Jacob Bailey, and the recorded travels of explorers, such as Henry Kelsey , Samuel Hearne , and Sir Alexander Mackenzie The Canadian Novel The first Canadian novelist of note was John Richardson , whose Wacousta (1832) popularized the genre of the national historical novel. Information regarding my advanced level course on Canadian Literature can be accessed by clicking here . This, unfortunately, will probably be the last year in which a course of this kind can be offered.
During the years in which I taught Canadian Literature at the University of Salento, I compiled an extensive subject-structured directory of web resources relevant to Canadian Studies. This was originally conceived as a tool to assist my students in their research, but it eventually developed into something much more ambitious in scope. I have long ceased to maintain this site, and it therefore inevitably contains a large number of outdated or obsolete items. Since it continues to be visited on a fairly regular basis, however, and is listed as a resource on various other websites, I have kept it online notwithstanding its numerous shortcomings. It can be consulted by clicking here My two most recent books on subjects relating to Canadian Literature are the following. Click on the images to see full descriptions on the publisher's website.

SUMMARY An important critical study of Canadian literature, placing internationally successful anglophone Canadian authors in the context of their national literary history. While the focus of the book is on twentieth-century and contemporary writing, it also charts the historical development of Canadian literature and discusses important eighteenth- and nineteenth-century authors. The chapters focus on four central themes in Canadian culture: Ethnicity, Race, Colonisation; Wildernesses, Cities, Regions; Desire; and Histories and Stories. Each chapter combines case studies of five key texts with a broad discussion of concepts and approaches, including postcolonial and postmodern reading strategies and theories of space, place and desire. Authors chosen for close analysis include Margaret Atwood, Michael Ondaatje, Alice Munro, Leonard Cohen, Thomas King and Carol Shields.

Increased online sales opportunities for Canadian publishers have been great for Canlit, but have reduced the need for a speciality online store like NWP.
