Home Home About the author A Short History of Abandoned and Downsized Canadian Military Bases Once upon a time in Canada, there was a Royal Canadian Navy, Royal Canadian Air Force and Canadian Army. For those who don't know the story, between 1964 and 1968, the three service branches were merged into a single entity, "The Canadian Armed Forces", unified under a single Chief of Defence Staff and a single Defence Staff. Although there would still Army, Navy and Air Force elements, they were no longer individual entities. Navy and Army pilots became a thing of the past in Canada, as did the RCAF Marine (patrol boat) Squadrons. Read more... Political Direction of the War
Canada's war effort was directed by Prime Minister Sir Robert Borden's Conservative administration, which, with the addition of dissident Liberals, became the Union government in the autumn of 1917. Borden's Memoirs provide much useful source material, and Craig Brown has given us an excellent biography. His article, "Sir Robert Borden, the Great War and Anglo-Canadian relations" concentrates on the major theme of Canadian cooperation with Britain in the war effort, while Cuff and Granatstein emphasize the American relationship, important in wartime for the first time. In The decline of politics , John English provides a thorough examination of the war within the broader context of the national political process. Canadians, including both historians and journalists, have long been fascinated with Sir Sam Hughes, who was until 1916 Borden's dynamic, but highly eccentric, Minister of Militia and Defence. Few of Hughes's personal papers survive, but Ronald Haycock has nevertheless written the only modern, critical biography of Hughes. Morton's A peculiar kind of politics is, in fact, a peculiar, but scholarly and very readable, account of a unique experiment the creation of the Ministry of Overseas Military Forces of Canada, a Canadian government department in Britain to administer Canada's overseas war effort and bring order to the chaos created by Hughes during the 1914-1916 period.

The Search For The Magnetic Pole: Air Force, Part 41
On July 19, 1947, a Canso aircraft took off from Royal Canadian Air Force Station Rockcliffe on a quest to define the unsteady location of the North Magnetic Pole. The Arctic mission, which would encounter everything from gales to menacing ice to unchartered terrain, was called Operation Polco.

The Accidental Enemy: Navy, Part 41
The winter of 1941-42 is usually treated by historians as a quiet one on the North Atlantic Run, but it is doubtful anyone guarding the convoy routes saw it that way. The North Atlantic was its typical vile self, with storm-battered ships and weary men standing to their duty in the face of a constant threat from U-boats. In fact, weather proved to be a major factor in the loss of two Royal Canadian Navy escorts to marine accidents in December 1941. This brought to an end a series of losses to weather and collision dating back to May 1940, when the battleship His Majesty’s Ship Revenge sideswiped and sank the gate vessel His Majesty’s Canadian Ship Ypres in Halifax. The destroyers Fraser and Margaree are also counted in this category. The navy suffered only one loss to marine accident after 1941: a testament, perhaps, to the introduction of effective radar by 1942 and improving seamanship.

THE DEVELOPMENT OF BRITISH LIGHT INFANTRY
IN NORTH AMERICA DURING THE SEVEN YEARS' WAR
"I am convinced, that till we have everything necessary, for carrying on the War here, within ourselves, Independent of Aid from this Country, we shall go on very slowly..." Lord Loudon to the Duke of Cumberland, August, 1756. INTRODUCTION The first British regulars to appear in North America were those accompanying a small British expedition to wrest Manhattan from the Dutch in 1664. Colonel Richard Nicolls' troops landed on Long Island August 25, 1664 at the exact site where General William Howe's troops would disembark over a century later. After a swift Dutch capitulation, Nicolls' redcoats and subsequent garrisons of British regulars would maintain a solid presence in New York for a virtually uninterrupted period of 119 years. The Canadian Military History Timeline
The Canadian Military History Timeline will be a WWW-based interactive digital resource highlighting the 250 most important events in Canada's military history. Each event description will explain the who, what, when, where, why, and the significance of the event. The Timeline will emphasize Canadian actions in the Boer War, the First World War, the Second World War, the Korean conflict, and peacekeeping activities. Attention will also be paid to important events on the homefront during these clashes, ranging from changes in government policy to military actions on the homefront. The Timeline will include extensive multimedia (primary documents, images, maps, graphs, sound, film, and object and image QuickTime VRs). The multimedia will give users direct access to digital replicas of some of the artefacts of our military's proud history. It will also help to re-capture something of the lives of our nation's soldiers. End-users will be able to access the Timeline in two versions, one suitable for the Canadian general public and high school students and one suitable for children in younger grades (written at approximately a grade six level). Each version will be available in English or French. Curriculum consultants will help to ensure that materials are appropriate for Canada's classrooms.
