Canadian Studies Major
The Canadian studies program is designed to develop in students an understanding of the history, society, political institutions, economy, and culture of Canada. The Canadian Studies curriculum places particular emphasis on examining the differences and similarities between Canada and the United States; Canadian-American relations; and the often conflict-ridden relationship between the largely French-speaking province of Quebec and the largely English-speaking rest of the country. Students trained in Canadian Studies will be able to speak, write, and do research on issues related to Canada. In addition, they will possess knowledge and skills to enable them to function well in an environment requiring international awareness and understanding of cross-cultural exchange.

Canadian Parliament considers anti-malware law
Posted by Maxim Weinstein Thu, 30 Apr 2009 15:35:50 GMT The Canadian House of Commons is considering bill C-27 , the Electronic Commerce Protection Act. In addition to providing civil penalties for unsolicited commercial e-mail (spam) and the unauthorized interception of e-mail (man in the middle attacks), it provides for similar penalties for the unauthorized installation of software.
  • The law would only apply to software installed "in the course of a commercial activity." Commercial activity is defined broadly (and circularly, with reference to activity of a "commercial nature"), but I think I understand the meaning. The law would require "express consent" of software installation, which is explicitly stated to include "clearly and simply" describing the "function, purpose, and impact of every computer program that is to be installed." (Note that this is similar to section IIA of our badware guidelines , though it does not explicitly include the part about potentially unwanted behaviors.)

He was, says the Canadian Press, the leader of a "terrorist group." Why did this "terrorist group" want to commit such heinous acts? The Canadian Press does not find that detail fit to print. "Toronto 18 ringleader gets 16 years," from The Canadian Press , October 25 (thanks to Ima): BRAMPTON, Ont. - The ringleader of the so-called Toronto 18, who admitted to leading a terrorist group with plans to attack Parliament, has been sentenced to 16 years in prison. Court heard weeks of evidence that Fahim Ahmad, 26, plotted to attack Parliament buildings, electrical grids and nuclear stations, and that he held training camps to assess recruits for his cause. At one point, police intercepted Ahmad suggesting going to Parliament to "cut off some heads" and "kill everybody.''... For Allah! Posted by Robert on October 25, 2010 10:06 AM 13 Comments

        Death penalty abolished
Broadcast Date: July 14, 1976 Does the government have the right to take the life of one of its citizens? For the first time, the Canadian government says no. After a decade of fierce debate and an impassioned, last-minute speech by Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau, the House of Commons narrowly passes Bill C-84, abolishing the death penalty in Canada. Death penalty abolished • The vote on Bill C-84 was 131 to 124 in favour of abolishing the death penalty, one of the closest in Canadian parliamentary history. It was a "free vote" — Members of Parliament didn't have to vote according to their party's official position. Cabinet members were required to vote for abolition. Many MPs voted against party lines: 37 Liberals voted to keep the death penalty, while 16 Conservatives voted to abolish it.
        • A week before the vote, Prime Minister Trudeau gave a passionate speech in the House of Commons on why the death penalty must be abolished. "Those who vote against the bill cannot escape their personal share of responsibility for the hangings that will take place if the bill is defeated," Trudeau told MPs. His speech was considered a turning point in the debate, but was not recorded for broadcast.

Bush Won't Address
Canadian Parliament
Seeks To Avoid Potentially Hostile Reaction

Globe and Mail Update
U.S. President George W. Bush will not address Parliament when he visits Canada next week to avoid possible negative reception or heckling, White House sources said.
The sources confirmed to The Globe and Mail Wednesday that Mr. Bush would not be speaking to Parliament.
The U.S. President had been invited by the Canadian government to address a joint session of the House of Commons and Senate during his visit to Ottawa, scheduled for Nov. 30 and Dec. 1.
But sources said Mr. Bush wants to avoid a potentially hostile reaction in Parliament, despite the fact that Liberal MPs who are not pro-Bush had promised Prime Minister Paul Martin last week that they would behave.
The President and Prime Minister will, however, hold a joint news conference after a lunch on Tuesday.
Mr. Bush will then travel to Halifax to give a speech after what is his first official trip to Ottawa, White House sources said.
The side trip would come after a working visit Tuesday with Prime Minister Paul Martin and a dinner that night with hundreds of prominent Canadians at the Museum of Civilization.

By ETs, Mr. Hellyer and these organizations mean ethical, advanced extraterrestrial civilizations that may now be visiting Earth. On September 25, 2005, in a startling speech at the University of Toronto that caught the attention of mainstream newspapers and magazines, Paul Hellyer, Canadas Defence Minister from 1963-67 under Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Prime Minister Lester Pearson, publicly stated: "UFOs, are as real as the airplanes that fly over your head." Mr. Hellyer went on to say, "I'm so concerned about what the consequences might be of starting an intergalactic war, that I just think I had to say something."

About the Parliament Buildings Fire of 1916:
While World War I was raging in Europe, the Canadian Parliament Buildings in Ottawa caught fire on a freezing February night in 1916. With the exception of the Library of Parliament, the Centre Block of the Parliament Buildings was destroyed and seven people died. Rumours were rife that the Parliament Buildings fire was caused by enemy sabotage, but a Royal Commission into the fire concluded that the cause was accidental.
