Over the past several years there has been increasing concern over Canada’s aging population and declining birth rate.  On November 29, 2007 Statistics Canada released a report in The Daily on Canada’s population by age and sex.  As of July 1, 2007 there were 100,800 more seniors (65+) than at the same time last year and it is estimated that by July 1, 2008 a further 300,000 people will turn 65. 342,176 babies were born in 2005 and the fertility rate was at 1.54.

Communication World July-August, 1989 by John Yuen
Changing Face of Canadian Population Challenges Managements Employment equitythe band-wagon that helped push women communicators to the forefront of the profession earlier this decadeis steamrolling ahead in Canada. As it advances, it is paving the way for the slow rise of a new shade of practitioner: the multicultural communicator, officially referred to in IABC short-hand as the MCC. But north of the 49th parallel on North America's vast continent, the numbers in this emerging generation of MCCs are not as high as some are anticipating given the fast-changing racial composition of the Canadian population. In 1951, fewer than two percent belonged to ethnic minorities. However, it is estimated that by the year 2001, some 15 percent of the population will be members of a visible minority group. (The 1986 Canadian census pegs their number at nine percent of the entire population of some 26 million.) In February this year, a survey by IABC's multicultural communicators standing committee, revealed that out of 1,350 Canadian IABC members, only 43 were MCCsor 3.2 percent. The handful had identified themselves as having multicultural backgrounds such as chicano/hispanic, black, Asian, North American Indian, Pacific Islander and Inuit. (For the entire membership of IABC, numbering some 11,000, the survey found only 360 MCCsor 3.3 percent of the total.)

CANADA'S POPULATION Total population is a simple count of the number of people
(citizens and landed immigrants) living in Canada.
Population increase is a fundamental driving force of change. It automatically increases human consumption of natural resources and releases of pollution, unless consumption patterns change to reduce per capita impacts. Historically, rates of consumption and pollution have been rising faster than population, both in Canada and globally. The world passed a historic landmark this fall, when the global population crossed the six billion mark, a doubling since the late 1950s. The rate of population increase is slowing, but is still at about 78 million new inhabitants of Earth every year. Current UN estimates are that we will hit 7 billion in only 13 more years, 8 billion in 28 years and 9 billion by just after mid-century. Although Canada's population is growing slowly, our growth rate is higher than that in most industrialized countries. Our population growth is concentrated in areas with considerable environmental stresses, particularly around Toronto and Vancouver. Global population growth has global impacts that are felt in Canada, including pressures on the environment and demand for products that we export. Year Population (000s) Assumptions about the Data
Although population in Canada has increased steadily since Confederation in 1867, this has largely been due to immigration, and not natural increase.

The second largest country in the world is Canada but as far its population is concerned it just has the 33 rd position. However, the number of people there has increased in the last 150 years.
According to statistics, Canada shows that there has been an increase of 3.6% between 1996 and 2000. The 2006 estimation of the United Nations States Census International Program Center the number is 33,098,932. Census reports in the country are taken every 5 years.
The population of the country contains a lot of ethnic groups. As the 2001 census reveals that no less than 34 such groups inhabit there. This consists of English, French, German, Italian, Irish, Ukrainian, First Nations and Chinese as well. Incidentally the per capita immigration rate in Canada is the highest.
Most of the Canadian population is settled along the US border and the Quebec City -Windsor Corridor namely Montreal, Ottawa (the area under the metropolitan), Golden Horse Shoe-South Central Ontario, the British Columbia Lower Mainland (Vancouver and its surroundings) etc. One thing that needs to be noted is most of the immigrants inhabit in the cities like Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver.

Mental Health of the Canadian Population:
A Comprehensive Analysis Thomas Stephens, Corinne Dulberg and Natacha Joubert Abstract This study examines eight measures of mental health and looks for associations with nine potential demographic and psychosocial determinants. Data from the National Population Health Survey (NPHS), analyzed by logistic regression, reveal consistently strong, graded, independent associations of current stress, social support, life events, education and childhood traumas with both positive and negative indicators of mental health status. Sex differences exist for four of eight measures. For most indicators, mental health is relatively poor among youth and improves with age. Physical and mental health problems are associated. There is no independent relation between mental health and income adequacy or province of residence. Two measures used in several previous Canadian surveys are recommended for inclusion in the NPHS to better monitor population mental health.
