SIR JOHN IS DEAD.
The Globe June 8, 1891 By Our Own Reporters Sir John A. Macdonald Ottawa, June 7 - "Gentlemen, Sir John Macdonald is dead." The speaker was Mr. Joseph Pope, the Premier's private secretary. The place was the gate of Earnscliffe. The time, 10.25, and the parties addressed a group of correspondents. He added still in a husky voice, "He died at 10.15 without pain and peace." The representatives of the press turned to the adjacent tent to which the telegraph instruments were already clicking off the fatal news by private messages, brought out by Mr. Pope, and they flashed the news by land and sea to newspapers in all parts of the English-speaking world. image of the paper that day The brief announcement, "Sir John Macdonald is dead," meant so much that the words kept ringing in the ears of those who heard it and the mind seemed hardly capable of realizing that the most prominent figure in the public life of Canada for 40 years had disappeared for ever. But a few days ago he was sitting in the councils of the nations, the directing spirit, but a few days ago he was planning a political programme for the future months. The tolling of the bell in the city tower rang out on the still night air telling Ottawa that her foremost citizen, the head of the Government, the great leader of a historic party was no more. The people needed not to inquire the meaning of the tolling bell. They knew when they head it that the master of Earnescliffe was dead.

Grave Sites of Canadian Prime Ministers About the National Program Canada has been blessed by able and dynamic prime ministers who have developed a vision for our nation and its place in the world. Their public careers have had a profound impact on our history and evolution as a country. In recognition of this contribution, our deceased prime ministers have been designated as persons of national historic significance. In addition, to acknowledge their important role, in 1999 the Government of Canada announced a program designed to protect and honour the grave sites of our Canadian prime ministers. The objective of the National Program for the Grave Sites of Canadian Prime Ministers is to ensure that the grave sites are conserved and recognized in a respectful and dignified manner. Another important objective of the program is to provide Canadians with information on the lives and accomplishments of each former prime minister, as well as the locations of their final resting places.

The Right Honourable
Louis Stephen St. Laurent

Liberal "Our nation was planned as a political partnership of two great races. It was planned by men of vision, of tolerance, as a partnership in which both of the partners would retain their essential characteristics, their religion, their culture." Louis St. Laurent, August 6, 1948 Private Life Did You Know? Louis St. Laurent was the first prime minister to create a 'media image'. Concerned that his shy, reserved personality would not appeal to post-war Canadians, the media picked up on one other trait - St. Laurent's love of and easy rapport with children. He became affectionately known to Canadians as 'Uncle Louis'.
  • Born:
  • Education: St. Charles Seminary, Sherbrooke, B.A., 1902; Laval University, LL.L., 1905. (Turned down a Rhodes Scholarship in 1905 to begin practicing law.)
  • Marriage: Jeanne Renault (1886-1966) in 1908.
    • Two sons and three daughters born.
  • Called to the Quebec Bar, 1905.
    • His bilingualism soon had St. Laurent representing French clients in Ottawa, Great Britain, and the United States where he excelled in corporate and constitutional law.
  • St. Laurent's father had run as a Liberal candidate in provincial election. Louis even met and shook hands with Wilfrid Laurier in 1896 during Laurier's campaign, but St. Laurent had no personal interest in politics.

Prime Minister Louis St. Laurent s speech on the entry of Newfoundland into Confederation.
http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/2/4/h4-4031-e.html
Address on the entry of Newfoundland into Confederation, April 1, 1949
I should like to direct my first words today to the people of the new Canadian province of Newfoundland. I know I am speaking for the people of the other nine provinces when I say that we welcome you warmly as fellow Canadians. "On the occasion of the entry of Newfoundland into Confederation as a province of Canada I send to your Majesty, on behalf of the Government and people of Canada, the expression of our devoted loyalty together with our sincere good wishes to you and to Her Majesty the Queen. The people of Canada, those of Newfoundland and those of the other provinces of Canada, now one nation under the Crown, are happy to leam of Your Majesty's improvement in health, and join in wishing you a speedy recovery." The union we celebrate today was not concluded without the most careful consideration by representatives of both Canada and Newfoundland. In 1947, when the delegation from your National Convention came to Ottawa to see if a satisfactory basis could be found for the political union, we were pleased. We had no hesitation in making it clear that we would welcome union. But we recognized the decision was one for you to make yourselves. We were happy when you, the people of Newfoundland, decided by a free vote that you favoured union. And we are happy today to have the union completed. Our nation in its origin is a union of two great races that have joined their talents without merging their identities. The union includes peoples of many other national origins. Our country covers a vast area between two oceans, with great differences of soil and climate and industry. But from end to end of Canada there is an ever deepening sense of community of interest and of purpose. We have a common pride in being Canadians. We are proud of Canada's past and of the record of our men and women in peace and in war. We are confident of our country's future. We feel that our nation can hold its head high among the nations of the world.

Grave Sites of Canadian Prime Ministers
Born on January 11, 1815, Glasgow, Scotland
Died on June 6, 1891, Ottawa, Ontario
Buried at Cataraqui Cemetery,
Kingston, Ontario Canada's first prime minister, Sir John A. Macdonald, has always been ranked among the country's great political leaders. Born in Scotland and raised near Kingston, Ontario, Mac- donald was already a political veteran in 1864, when he played a key role in the making of the Canadian Confederation. He was the undisputed choice to be the first prime minister. "Sir John A." held the office from July 1, 1867 until 1873, and again from 1878 until his death in 1891. A visionary statesman and a determined Conservative partisan, Macdonald was a brilliant parliamentary tactician and a much-loved campaign leader. He said he intended to see the gristle of a nation harden into bone, and he believed a strong central government was essential to Canada. His National Policy of tariff protection, westward expansion, and a railway to the Pacific helped lay the basis for a transcontinental nation.

That the reputation of Canada's fourth prime minister has since sunk into obscurity is due to the unfortunate brevity of his term of office.
