Competition in mobile accelerates with new carriers planning launch dates Oh, my, oh, my, what did we do before the advent of the mobile phone that now is considered a necessity by most people from their teen years up to, and including, the retired! It’s a means of communicating with friends, an essential for almost everyone in business, an entertainment unit for teens, a promotional vehicle for advertisers, and an absolute necessity for anyone faced with a calamity, large or small. How to choose the mobile phone that really offers you what you want and at a cost that you can afford is a subject of discussion in both homes and businesses. This fall, the choices will be even wider when several new carriers are expected to launch their mobile offerings on the market. For this issue, we interviewed senior executives of Canada’s top three mobile carriers, as well as the management of three of the new mobile carriers coming on the market in future months. (In addition to these, we know that several others are readying to launch as well.) Each of the new carriers hopes to win a share of the Canadian mobile market which, most people say, currently has only slightly above two-thirds cell phone penetration. And you can bet on the fact that ‘the new guys’ will also try to win customers from the big three who have invested heavily to offer the fastest, most up-to-date products and services.

The Canadian International Communications Program, a program for improving international communication respecting the Canadian oil, gas and petrochemical industries, was undertaken in mid 2001.
Canadian Technology CD Rom Site Map
The program was developed with support from the federal and provincial governments and the Canadian Association for the WPC. It drew wide participation from a cross section of industry associations and companies which provided data, photographs, and other illustrations and was directed especially towards development of an interactive multimedia presentation. Special technical support was provided by Nexen Inc., a Canadian oil, gas and petrochemical company and EnCana Inc., a large Canadian oil and gas producing and pipelines company. The resulting CD Rom was featured at Canadian booths at the 17th World Petroleum Congress in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in 2002 and in an updated format, at other conferences and exhibitions including the Annual Offshore Technology Conference in Houston, U.S.A. and, in 2005 at the 18th WPC in Johannesburg, SA. The presentation includes information on the Canadian petroleum industry, its innovations, and the services and products it offers and support services provided by the government sector. The presentation will be updated regularly. Back to Top

International space station: Canada's arm reaches into space.

On Nov. 20 the Russian Zarya , or sunrise, cargo module blasted off from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. Over the next four years components from the other international partners, including Canada, the U.S., Russia, Japan, Brazil and the 11-member European Space Agency, will be added in 50 space shuttle and rocket launches. Spar Aerospace of Montreal and a host of sub-contractors from Saskatoon, Halifax, Ottawa and Richmond, B.C. have developed the next generation of the Canadarm, the robot arm that assists in moving equipment outside spacecraft. Spar and friends have designed high-tech machinery including the space station remote manipulator system, the special purpose dexterous manipulator and the remote mobile base system. For those of us who aren't engineers, the remote manipulator system is a 17-metre long crane or arm, like the Canadarm, that will move along the outside of the space station on what's called the remote mobile base system.

Canadian Technology in Animation
The thought of animation brings different thoughts to different people.  Some of us think Mickey Mouse.  Some think Roger Rabbit .  Then there’s the Sunday funnies.  Dora the Explorer Polar Express .  The list goes on and on. A great deal of that body of work relies on Canadian technology in animation as it’s developed over almost a hundred years.  As animation changed and evolved with time, so did the technology behind it. Perhaps one of the simplest forms of Canadian technology in animation was born in Scotland but Scottish-born Norman McLaren became an industry giant in Canadian animation history.  All McLaren did, at least at the very beginning, was paint and scratch images directly onto film.  He didn’t have a camera but he didn’t let that stop him. Fast forward to the current age of computers and you’ll find a dramatic shift in the way Canadian technology in animation is used.  Perhaps the most remarkable difference is that film stock is rarely ever used.  It’s all pretty much computerized instead. And cartoons are no longer the main focus of the people who employ Canadian technology in animation, either.  The success of the movie
