Records indicate that there are about 35 elephants in zoos across Canada. These elephants are found in private and municipal zoos across the country. The provincial governments are responsible for setting the laws that govern these facilities while the Canadian Association of Zoos and Aquariums (CAZA) sets national industry guidelines. Unfortunately, these guidelines are voluntary and many accredited zoos in Canada reportedly fall short of the guidelines outlined by CAZA. Canadian zoos are encouraged to seek accreditation from CAZA and/or the American Zoo and Aquarium Association (AZA). Accreditation is also voluntary and not a legal requirement. The guidelines cover the areas of personnel, training, tools, husbandry, facilities, behavior, reproduction, veterinary care, nutrition, conservation, education and research. Among the tools that are recommended for use in care and management of elephants include the guide, ankus or elephant hooks as traditional tools used for directing elephant behavior. Chaining is listed as an acceptable method of temporary restraint. Facilities are advised to limit the time elephants spend tethered, unless tethering is necessary for veterinary treatment or transport. The Elephant Restraint Device (ERD) is highly recommended, particularly in facilities managing bulls or elephants in protected contact. Recommended safety tools include pepper spray, fire extinguishers, electric prods, tranquilizer guns and an elephant gun, which is a gun of sufficient caliber to dispatch an elephant.

Canadian Zoos Of course, not all the world’s best zoos lie within the borders of the United States Excellent zoos are found throughout the world, and those in Canada are often an easy day’s drive for many Americans. Here are some of the very best Canadian zoos:
Calgary Zoo, Botanical Garden, and Prehistoric Park
1300 Zoo Road North East Calgary Alberta www.calgaryzoo.org Calgary is well‑known for both the Stampede and for its nearby national parks. It is also home to western Canada 's finest zoo. Located on St. Georges Island in the heart of Calgary , the zoo’s landmark attraction is Destination Africa, with TransAlta Rainforest, home to gorillas, and African Savannah, home to giraffes, zebras, and underwater views of hippos. Another highlight here is the Canadian Wilds, where the many native animals include wolves, grizzly bears, moose, wood bison, and cougars. The most unique feature of this facility is the 62‑acre Prehistoric Park , which displays over twenty life‑sized dinosaurs.

CALL FOR PAPERS: Thinking About Animals in Canada Posted by John Sorenson on 2004 September 24 (Friday) : 09:30 AM
from the dept.

In November 2003, Brock University hosted a very successful international conference on "Representing Animals", which provided opportunities for a mingling of academics and activists. We would like to invite you to attend an upcoming event that we hope will be equally successful. Please circulate widely and please join us in February!
Animals play fundamental roles in human society and our relations to them are fraught with contradictions. Although many still believe that animals are our slaves, to use as we please, attitudes are changing. This two-day conference will explore this social transformation, surveying some of the current and historical attitudes and practices towards animals in Canada. The conference is a joint effort of the Canadian Studies Association and the Brock University Thinking About Animals project. We welcome participation from activists and academics. The conference is free. Submissions on any topic are welcome. Possible topics include:

The Sumatran tiger is found only on the Indonesian island of Sumatra.
Sumatran tigers are the smallest of the tiger subspecies. The Sumatran tiger has the darkest coat of all tigers. Its broad, black stripes are closely spaced and often doubled. Unlike the Siberian tiger , it has striped forelegs. The Sumatran male tiger weighs between 220 to 300 while the female weighs between 160 to 240 lbs and stands 2.5 feet tall at the shoulder. The Sumatran male is 8 to 9 feet long from its nose to tail while the female is 7 to 8 feet long.
The documentation of the Sumatran tiger has been very poor. There were an estimated 1,000 tigers in Sumatra in 1978 but, subsequent agricultural development has decreased the tiger population and habitat. In 1992, the Indonesian Department of Forest Protection and Nature Conservation estimated that there were as many as 500 wild Sumatran tigers. 400 in the protected 5 national parks (the largest population is in the Gunung Leuser National Park and has 110 Sumatran tigers) and 2 game reserves and another 100 in unprotected areas.
The captive population of Sumatran tigers is starting to thrive thanks in part to a conservation program developed by the Indonesian Zoological Parks Association and the Tiger GCS. There are currently 232 captive Sumatran tigers descended from 37 wild tigers. Of these 246 captive tigers, 68 are in United States and Canadian zoos, 68 in Indonesian zoos, 108 in Europe, 10 in Australian, and 2 in Japanese zoos.

Zoos and aquariums support and reinforce the values and attitudes of the visitor. Twelve institutions and 1,400 visitors participated in the studies over a three-year period. Fortunately Canadians are not lacking in zoos to visit. Here are some of the great zoos Canadians enjoy: Vancouver Aquarium
* Field studies indicate that B.C. resident killer whales have a specialized diet of salmon. As West Coast salmon stocks decline, the dietary requirements identified by Aquarium studies provide important information in supporting conservation efforts that preserve adequate salmon for the whale populations.
