Cancer, General: Overview This condition is included in the report of anyone who has (or has had) a known cancer , or who may be at greater risk of developing it. It contains general recommendations that may be useful in dealing with a wide range of cancers. There are many tactics that can be employed to reduce the risk of getting cancer . When an increased risk of cancer is suggested, taking appropriate actions early on can lower this risk.
Prognosis As a general principle, when weight loss has occurred or is significant prior to the start of chemotherapy , the survival rate is reduced.
The prognostic effect of weight loss prior to chemotherapy was analyzed using data from over 3,000 patients enrolled in 12 chemotherapy protocols. The frequency of weight loss ranged from 31% for favorable non-Hodgkin's lymphoma to 87% for gastric cancer . Median survival was significantly shorter in 9 protocols for the patients with weight loss compared to those without weight loss.

General Information By: jcander Cancer of the colon is also called colorectal cancer as it can arise in both the colon (the lower part of the digestive tract) and in the very lowest section of the colon, which is known as the rectum. It is a serious condition that affects the colon, the rectum and the appendix. In this disease, which is often insidious in its development, malignant cells proliferate in the tissues of the colon.
One of the more obvious presentations of colon cancer is chronic blood loss in the stool, often dark blood or black patches in the stools themselves. Colon cancer is among the commonest cancers in the Western world, with more than 104000 new diagnoses being made every year.

New cells grow even when you don't need them, and old cells don't die when they should. These extra cells can form a mass called a tumor. Tumors can be benign or malignant. Benign tumors aren't cancer while malignant ones are. Cells from malignant tumors can invade nearby tissues. They can also break away and spread to other parts of the body. Most cancers are named for where they start. For example, lung cancer starts in the lung, and breast cancer starts in the breast. The spread of cancer from one part of the body to another is called metastasis. Symptoms and treatment depend on the cancer type and how advanced it is. When explaining the importance of preventive care and regular access to a primary physician, few examples are quite so demonstrative as the early detection and diagnosis of cancer.  We may not know the precise causes of cancer, but we do know this: the earlier treatment is begun, the better the outcome.  Cancer appears in many forms and symptoms are difficult to generalize.  Nevertheless, the following can be indicative of the disease:
    • Unexplained weight loss of 10 pounds or more. Fever. Loss of energy and/or unexplained anemia.  Anemia refers to a drop in your red blood cell count and can indicate chronic blood loss.  Pain. Changes in skin color.  For example, a yellowish tinge to the skin can indicate jaundice , a  sign of liver failure. Changes in bowel habits and/or blood in your stool.

  • Liver cancer is an abnormal growth of tissue in the liver. The liver is an organ on the upper right part of the abdomen (stomach), just below the right lung and behind the ribs. The job of the liver is to make enzymes and bile that help digest food and remove harmful material from the blood. Vitamins A, D, E, K, and B12, iron, and copper are also stored by the liver. Another job of the liver is to make clotting factors in the blood to stop bleeding.
Normally, hepatocytes (liver cells) divide or split in a planned way, making more cells only when needed. Cancer occurs when abnormal cells grow and divide without control or order, often making too much tissue (tumor). Cancer cells may grow into nearby healthy tissue. They may also break away from the tumor and spread through the blood stream or lymphatic system to other parts of the body. When cancer spreads, it is called metastasis. Once cancer cells spread, the cancer is harder to control.
