Many beginners get discouraged when they make candles the first few times and they don't get the results they hope to achieve. Follow the candle making procedures below to get the most out of your testing.
One of the first mistakes beginners make is they don't keep track of their tests. The easiest way is to keep a log book and include the following information:
The second mistake beginners make is making a huge batch when testing. Some people like really strong smells and certain colors. If you are intending on selling your candles, you have to ask yourself is this what other people will like? Ask some friends to come over and let you know what they think while testing. Let them see your examples and request that they smell them prior to burning, ask them what they think of the colors, and then light your candle and ask them what they think of the fragrance. Make sure to add this to your logs!

STACKING CANDLES
Stacking Candles look great and the moulds are so fun and easy to use. Create simple solid colour candles or make striped or rainbow layered candles. These moulds are great for the beginner candle maker to use. They are shallow, so the candle sets up quickly. Each mould set comes with 6 - 2 cavity moulds, 2 wicks, 1 wicking needle and instructions. Stacking Candles Item # 3081244 - 5 Point Star Item # 3081245 - Round Item # 3081246 - Heart
ROLLED CANDLES
Rolled Candles are formed by rolling a sheet of pliable wax around a wick. Pre-formed beeswax sheets are popular for this purpose.
CONTAINER CANDLES
Container Candles are created by pouring melted wax into containers. A soft, low melting point wax will melt down the sides of the container. A semi-rigid wick having a core of paper or zinc is used so that the wick will remain upright in the pool of molten wax. The wick is crimped in a wick clip to position it on the bottom of the container.
VOTIVES
Votives are moulded of soft wax and equipped with a wick clip and a semi-rigid wick. They are burned in small glass containers and are easily replaced when consumed.

Get Started Making Your Own Candles By David Fisher , About.com Guide
    See More About:
An Assortment of Hand Made Candles David Fisher zSB(3,3) There is nothing like candles to bring warmth to a room...and making your own candles is a lot easier than you think. It's an exciting craft that's easy to get started with, with just a few simple ingredients and some basic tools and equipment (that you probably have in your kitchen or garage) are all you need to begin making beautiful, fragrant candles. Although there are many different types of candles , the basic requirements for a simple candle making setup are pretty much the same. You'll need:
  • An understanding of Candle Safety (both the making and the use of them.)
  • A heat source like a hot plate or electric stove
  • A "double boiler" set up - a large, low pot for boiling water, with an old coffee can set inside it to melt the wax, will do just fine

A General Guide to Candle Making Ideas
For hundreds of years candles have provided warmth and illuminations. Candles are made with a wick and wax. The wax functions as a fuel. Candlemakers are also called chandlers. There are as many types of candleholders as there are candles everything from solid silver to humble glass vases are used to hold candles. Candles come in many different shapes, sizes, colors and scents. Some types of candles come in glass jars and have special scents to provide different health and relaxation benefits. These types of candles are called aromatherapy candles the different scents provide different benefits. For example, citrus scents increase energy while lavender induces relaxation. Other types are used for their color to enhance interior décor. Candles can also be used to make gorgeous center pieces or as lights in a chandelier. Many people use candles to enhance a romantic dinner for two, but they are also great for other types of gatherings such as a nightly family dinner. Other elements, such as water, can also be used to enhance the beauty of candles. Simply add floating candles to a decorative bowl of water and you have a beautiful focal point for a room. Flowers are also a natural complement to candles. Combining flowers and candles brings color, nature and a fresh aroma to a room. Many decorators fill differently sized bowls with colored sand to hold candles and bring a zen or eastern flair to the décor. The sand can be purchased in many different colors. The type of candle holder you select will depend on the type of décor you are creating. In the example above sand and a shallow bowl were combined to create an eastern flair.

The write up is all about making candles, what are the ingredients required and how has it helped people since decades. What are the ways to reduce the production cost of manufacture are specified and light has been thrown on it. Since the primitive age man has depended on fire to cook and keep himself warm. Since invention of fire, man depended on fire for to lighten up his home. As the time passed by man found a way to make candle out of beeswax. However as time passed cheaper substitutes were used to make candles. In the modern times now the candles are used as decorative items as the electricity was invented and is being used extensively. The candle is basically a light source as that usually has an internal wick rising through the center of a column of solid fuel. Nowadays decorative candles are available in the market. People have started to make candles at home. These candles are made up of melting the industrial wax on the stove at home and then pouring them into various moulds and letting them cool down at the room temperature. Fragrance Oils
Fragrance oils are sold by weight, not volume, so fill levels will vary. Cold Process (CP) SOAP:
PARAFFIN WAX: Almost never an issue with scent throw and most oils will throw well in plain paraffin. Typically tested at 5-6% or 1 oz per pound, but this depends on the wax because some waxes can't hold that much oil.
    Recommended usage of oils:
: 1-3% is considered the general "skin safe" ratio for lotions, creams, bath salts, fizzies, scrubs, body butter, salves, shampoo, conditioner, body spray, shower gel, etc.
Cold Process (CP) Soap: 0.7 oz - 1 oz per lb. Delicate florals should be batched at cool temps.
Hot Pot (HP) or Cold Process Oven Process (CPOP) Soap: 0.7 oz. - 1 oz. per lb.
If a fragrance doesn't note it's compatible in HP, is it? Typically, if it's CP compatible, then yes, it's HP compatible. Usually, the exception is fragile florals (jasmine, gardenias, etc) and essential oils. Add fragrance oils last, after the cook phase or at trace and right before pouring into mold...this way there is less evaporation from the prolonged heat. However, you must stir this rather thick mixture very thoroughly.(For both Hot process in the oven, in a pot, or in a crockpot).
FIXING A SEIZE! Hot-Process is a great way to fix a CP seize in the pot.
