    History in Cape Verde
Edit This In 1462 Portuguese settlers arrived at Santiago and founded Ribeira Grande (now Cidade Velha)the first permanent European settlement city in the tropics. In the 16th century the archipelago prospered from the transatlantic slave trade. Pirates occasionally attacked the Portuguese settlements. Sir Francis Drake sacked Ribeira Grande in 1585. After a French attack in 1712 the city declined in importance relative to Praia which became the capital in 1770. The archipelago has experienced recurrent drought and famine since the end of the 18th century and with the decline in the slave trade its fragile prosperity slowly vanished. However the islands' position astride mid-Atlantic shipping lanes made Cape Verde an ideal location for resupplying ships. Because of its excellent harbor Mindelo (on the island of São Vicente) became an important commercial center during the 19th century. Portugal changed Cape Verde's status from a colony to an overseas province in 1951 in an attempt to blunt growing nationalism. Nevertheless in 1956 Amilcar Cabral a Cape Verdean and Rafael Barbosa organized (in Guinea-Bissau) the clandestine African Party for the Independence of Guinea-Bissau and Cape Verde (PAIGC) which demanded improvement in economic social and political conditions in Cape Verde and Portuguese Guinea and formed the basis of the two nations' independence movement. Moving its headquarters to Conakry Guinea in 1960 the PAIGC began an armed rebellion against Portugal in 1961. Acts of sabotage eventually grew into a war in Portuguese Guinea that pitted 10 000 Soviet bloc-supported PAIGC soldiers against 35 000 Portuguese and African troops.

Classes and Castes. There is little class distinction in Cape Verde because the vast majority of the population is poor. There is a small but growing middle class of people in the towns and cities and virtually no upper class. Those of higher socio-economic backgrounds tend to identify culturally with Europe and to think of themselves as more "European," often because they have spent time abroad.

Culture and People of Cape Verde
Find an Expert Cape Verdeans originate from a mixture of African and European cultures. Their way of life has been heavily influenced by their environment, the socio-economic events of being a Portuguese colony and by the slave trade. Cape Verdeans range from the very dark-skinned to the very fair. On Fogo Island, there is even a community of farmers who trace their ancestors to a French Duke. More than half a million Cape Verdeans live abroad. Between 1820 and 1920 around 40,000 Cape Verdeans emigrated to America, many of them as crew on whaling boats. They were escaping famine and drought and today there are more than 400,000 Cape Verdeans living in the United States. The largest community is in New England with many of them being second and third generation immigrants. The famous US Rhythm and Blues band the Turnpikes (later Tavares) were all sons of Cape Verdean immigrants. The origins of the Cape Verdean are linked directly to maritime trade of slavery. They are descendents of slaves and traders from the West Coast of Africa and European merchants. The white Europeans were mostly descendents of Italian traders and Portuguese settlers and colonialists. The Cape Verdean music is strongly influenced by Africa and Brazil. It plays a key role in daily life. The sounds of the Cape Verdean ‘Morna' can be heard all over the islands. It is a slow, sad, traditional song and comes from the English word to ‘mourn'. Annual music festivals have become high profile events, attracting prominent musicians from all over the world. The standards of live music in Cape Verde are noticeably high.

Author explores European aspect of Cape Verde culture
By Monica Allen, Standard-Times staff writer
NEW BEDFORD Americo C. Araujo delves into America's most thorny issue race in his self-published book "Little Known: The European Side of Cape Verde Islands."
Mr. Araujo, who teaches Spanish and Portuguese at New Bedford High School, said he has wanted to write the book for more than a decade because he has spent most of his life explaining what it means to him to be Cape Verdean.
He contends that most Americans and even some Cape Verdeans know little about the European ancestry of a number of Cape Verdeans.
"Through the years I have heard many and varied points of view as to who the Cape Verdean is, enough to fill a volume," he writes in the paperback that was published this year by his own company, DAC Publishers. "Very seldom have I heard a correct interpretation. Most have been the incorrect view that all Cape Verdeans are neither black nor white."
Mr. Araujo maintains that while the majority of Cape Verdeans are people of mixed African and European descent, there is a small minority of people who descended from Europeans and another minority who descended from Africans. To get a full picture of Cape Verdean culture, people must understand these minorities as well, he writes.
