CULTURE In 1951 the Portuguese colony was changed to an overseas province. In 1961 all of the islanders obtained full Portuguese citizenship. Despite these developments, a strong independence movement remained active, led by the African Party for the Independence of Guinea-Bissau and Cape Verde (PAIGC).

Home Culture Cuisine Property ... Holidays Santa Maria Cape Verde Culture Yes, the correct address should be Sal, Cape Verde . We are just interchanging the way we refer to it so that the reader becomes acquainted with the various ways this beautiful destination is addressed. Cabo Verde . This is what we mean ( Cabo Verde means “Green Cape” in Portuguese). Anyway, you will probably be aware there there is not as much information about Santa Maria and Cape Verde in general compared with the more popular destinations on offer. This is not necessarily a bad thing since many other destinations have been over run with the tourist element and the discerned traveller may be looking for something a little different. Well, look no further. You will also notice that most sites about Cape Verde have no real personal touches to them. Almost as though they were generated from a standard holiday script web site template with little or no personal input. Not so here. I, Johnston Otaigbe (but please call me jay), am up until the early hours looking for more info on this warm and relaxing destination. Music and Festivals We could say that the music, like the people, is a healthy mixture of Portuguese and African styles. There is a festival in May across the water in the islands of

    Culture in Cape Verde
The vestiges of Portuguese culture are much more evident than those of African culture, although this is less true on So Tiago Island, which has a significant number of people of African ancestry. Most people in Cape Verde are creole; about a quarter are of African descent. Portuguese is the official language. People also speak Crioulo, an Africanised Creole Portuguese. For its tiny size, Cape Verde has produced a wealth of literature. The works written prior to independence focused on liberation and were mainly in Crioulo. Post independence, the themes expanded to include the mass emigration from the islands by the American immigrants and racial discrimination. Some writers, continue to write in Crioulo, while others, write in Portuguese, the dominant literary tongue. Cape Verde is home to a variety of musical styles. One of the most popular is the foot-stomping funana, a dance beat popular in Praia and other cities and towns; morna, the national songform, typically slow, moody and in a minor key; and coladeira, a fast-moving, fluffy style of dance music. The country's best-known musician is Cesaria Evora, the 'barefoot diva', who sings in the traditional Cabo styles. Cape Verdean food is basically Portuguese, but some dishes are unique to the islands. One of the most unusual and delicious is pastel (pastry with content inside) - a mix of fresh tuna, onions and tomatoes, wrapped in a pastry blended from boiled potatoes and corn flour, deep fried and served hot.
