Capital Punishment Deterrence means to punish somebody as an example and to create fear in other people for the punishment. Death penalty is one of those extreme punishments that would create fear in the mind of any sane person. Ernest van den Haag, in his article "On Deterrence and the Death Penalty" mentions, "One abstains from dangerous acts because of vague, inchoate, habitual and, above all, preconscious fears" (193). Everybody fears death, even animals . Most criminals would think twice if they knew their own lives were at stake. Although there is no statistical evidence that death penalty deters crime, but we have to agree that most of us fear death. Suppose there is no death penalty in a state and life imprisonment without parole is the maximum punishment. What is stopping a prisoner who is facing a life imprisonment without parole to commit another murder in the prison? According to Paul Van Slambrouck, " Death penalty is good and serves a definite purpose of reducing crime as well as bringing justice to the criminals and innocent. In order to serve its purpose, it must be adjusted and made more effective and efficient. The justice system has changed dramatically in the past thirty years in order to make sure that the rightly accused is brought to justice. I believe that death penalty should not be abolished, as it ensures the safety of the society, brings justice to those who have suffered and most importantly helps in reducing crime and criminals in our society. Death penalty is important to keep the brightness of justice and public safety shining brightly on our society.

Related articles Attorney General Richard L. Thornburgh said yesterday that he is taking a "second look" at the last-minute order of his predecessor, Edwin Meese III, calling for special investigations of members of Congress suspected of criminal wrongdoing. "I want to find out what the underlying premise was in the issuance of the order," Thornburgh said in one of his first interviews since being sworn in Aug. 12. Thornburgh's comments came as Sen. Carl Levin (D-Mich.), chairman of a Governmental Affairs subcommittee, asked him to rescind the order because the public had no chance to comment on it and because it contains a drafting error and other problems. Capital Punishment in Canada
Capital punishment is the execution of criminals by the state for committing crimes that are regarded so heinous that this is the only acceptable punishment. Capital Punishment deters murder, and is just retribution. Capital punishment not only lowers the homicide rate, but its value as retribution alone is a good reason for handing out death sentences. Support for the death penalty in the U.S. has risen to an average of 80% according to an article written by Richard Worsnop, entitled "Death penalty debate centres on Retribution." This figure is slightly lower in Canada where support for the death penalty is at 72% of the population over 18 years of age, as stated in an article by Kirk Makir, in the March 26, 1987 edition of the Globe and Mail, entitled "B.C. MPs split on Death Penalty." The death penalty deters murder by injecting the fear of execution into potential killers. People are less likely to do something illegal if they think that harm will come to themselves. Let us now focus on Canada. The last two people to be executed in Canada were Arthur Lucas and Ron Turpin. They were executed on December 11, 1962. These executions in Canada were carried out by hanging.

        Death penalty abolished
Broadcast Date: July 14, 1976 Does the government have the right to take the life of one of its citizens? For the first time, the Canadian government says no. After a decade of fierce debate and an impassioned, last-minute speech by Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau, the House of Commons narrowly passes Bill C-84, abolishing the death penalty in Canada. Death penalty abolished • The vote on Bill C-84 was 131 to 124 in favour of abolishing the death penalty, one of the closest in Canadian parliamentary history. It was a "free vote" — Members of Parliament didn't have to vote according to their party's official position. Cabinet members were required to vote for abolition. Many MPs voted against party lines: 37 Liberals voted to keep the death penalty, while 16 Conservatives voted to abolish it.
        • A week before the vote, Prime Minister Trudeau gave a passionate speech in the House of Commons on why the death penalty must be abolished. "Those who vote against the bill cannot escape their personal share of responsibility for the hangings that will take place if the bill is defeated," Trudeau told MPs. His speech was considered a turning point in the debate, but was not recorded for broadcast.

Search billions of records on Ancestry.com John McCaffary and the Abolition of Capital Punishment in Wisconsin: A Collection of Historical Accounts " During times of stress and change we often turn to the past for reassurance, longing for the "good old days." We see the past as a simpler time, a period of clearer choices because our selective memory filters our view of an earlier era. For those events beyond our recollection we tend to depend on the memories our parents have shared with us or we vaguely recall from a history course or a historical account we read years before. This somewhat two-dimensional view of the past has been an important theme in understanding the image of the past in the mind of America. Intellectual and social historians have analyzed this particularly American trait and have given different reasons for its persistence in American culture. ....But nostalgia isn't what it used to be, or more accurately, but less cleverly, nostalgia isn't history." [Nicholas C Burkel in the forward of "Kenosha Kaleidoscope: Images of the Past" by Don Jensen, Published by Kenosha Community History Committee, Kenosha, Wisconsin, 1985]
