This includes 12 Christian faith groups, Islam, Judaism, Atheism; and persons with no religious affiliation or identification. Christian groups have taken opposite views on the death penalty: Fundamentalist and other Evangelical denominations tend to be supportive of the death penalty (a.k.a. the retentionist position). Exceptions are the Mennonites and Amish. Some have pointed out an apparent contradiction here. Conservative Protestants tend to be pro-life and opposed to abortion access. Yet they generally favor capital punishment, which involve the taking of lives. Conservatives generally defend their position by pointing out that they are opposed to the taking of innocent human life, like an embryo, fetus, newborn, child, etc. But a person sitting on death row awaiting execution is not innocent; they have been found guilty of murder often multiple murders.

About this section:
This section of our web site deals with the execution of criminals found guilty of having committed serious crimes. This used to be a universal practice. Almost all democracies in the world have abandoned the death penalty. The U.S., Japan, and South Korea are the only exceptions. You may be infuriated by what you read in this section. Like other topics elsewhere in this website, we try to explain objectively all viewpoints. Thus, no matter what your beliefs are, you will certainly see material with which you strongly disagree.

8. CAPITAL PUNISHMENT: Christian Or Unchristian? By Blake Lasslett
What does the Bible teach concerning captial punishment?
http://www.the-highway.com/punishment.html
Christian or Unchristian?
Blake C. Lasslett
OLD TESTAMENT
“Who so sheddeth man’s blood, by man shall his blood be shed; for in the image of God made he man” Genesis NEW TESTAMENT “For he is the minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that which is evil be afraid; for he beareth not the sword in vain; for he is the minister of God a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil” Romans
INTRODUCTION Many people today think that capital punishment is unchristian. In order to understand why, one must know something about the influence of humanism on our society. Humanism is a philosophy that emphasizes the all importance and pre-eminence of man. On the surface this seems to be a laudable goal. However, in its quest to exalt man, it has denied the Bible and relegated the God of the Bible to a rocking chair as a mere spectator in human history. The Detroit News recently quoted a man as saying, “ . . . there is no way in the world to justify capital punishment and at the same time say that we believe in God.” The god of this mentality is not the God of the Bible but a god fabricated in the minds of men. The humanist has invented a god of maudlin sentimentality to replace the true God of absolute justice. We cannot make God what we would have Him to be. We must examine His word and see the picture which he has given us of Himself. “The wicked shall be turned into hell, and all the nations that forget God.” (Psalm 9:17). The humanist has one kind of god and the Bible sets forth quite a different picture. The Bible shows the Lord God of heaven to be a God of real love and mercy, but a God also of absolute justice.

Capital punishment
From New World Encyclopedia
Jump to: navigation search Previous (Capital Cities and Tombs of the Ancient Koguryo Kingdom) Next (Capitol Reef National Park) Executions of the Third of May by Francisco Goya Capital punishment , or the death penalty , is the execution of a convicted criminal by the state as punishment for the most serious crimes —known as capital crimes . The word "capital" is derived from the Latin capitalis , which means "concerning the head"; therefore, to be subjected to capital punishment means (figuratively) to lose one's head. The death penalty when meted out according to law is quite different from murder , which is committed by individuals for personal ends. Nevertheless, human life has supreme value. Regimes that make prolific use of capital punishment, especially for political or religious offenses, violate the most important human right—the right to life. The death penalty was historically misused, meted out for minor crimes , and to suppress political dissent and religious minorities. Such misuse of the death penalty greatly declined in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, and today it has been abolished in many countries, particularly in Europe and Latin America. In most countries where it is retained, it is reserved as a punishment for only the most serious crimes: premeditated murder espionage treason , and in some countries, drug trafficking . Among some countries, however, use of the death penalty is still common.
