    Cardiology
Emory cardiologists are widely recognized for their expertise in recognizing and treating a full range of cardiovascular disorders and diseases. Our cardiology services cover the entire continuum of care, from prevention and early detection to the latest in cardiovascular treatment. Our cardiologists and cardiac specialists also offer services for diagnosis and treatment of specific cardiac conditions in our cardiology sub-specialty areas:
    Adult Congenital Heart
Performing more than 900 procedures per year, Emory's Congenital Cardiac Surgery Center is one of the most active programs in the country and the most comprehensive in Georgia for treating neonates, young infants, children, adolescents, and adults with congenital cardiac disease. Forerunners in the performance of minimally invasive surgical procedures, implantation of mechanical heart devices, and application of improved heart valves, our surgical team has regularly achieved survival outcomes that are at the top of national levels, treating pediatric patients at Sibley Heart Center of Children's Healthcare of Atlanta (CHOA) at Egleston, and adult patients at the Emory/Sibley Adult Congenital Cardiac Center at Emory University Hospital.
    Arrhythmia / Electrophysiology
An arrhythmia refers to an abnormal rhythm of the heartbeat. Arrhythmias can happen if the heart beats too fast, too slow, or beats with an irregular rhythm. The cardiology team at the Emory Heart and Vascular Center use innovative methods to diagnose arrhythmias and atrial fibrillation including (but not limited to) Electrocardiograms (ECG/EKG), Echocardiograms, and Electrophysiology (EP) studies. Arrhythmia treatment options are equally as vast and include methods such as use of pacemakers, ablation, medications, implanted cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs), and Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy.

Radiation cataract risk in interventional cardiology personnel.
Vano E, Kleiman NJ, Duran A, Rehani MM, Echeverri D, Cabrera M Radiology Department, Complutense University, Madrid, Spain. The lens of the eye is one of the most radiosensitive tissues in the body, and exposure of the lens to ionizing radiation can cause cataract. Cumulative X-ray doses to the lenses of interventional cardiologists and associated staff can be high. The International Commission on Radiological Protection recently noted considerable uncertainty concerning radiation risk to the lens. This study evaluated risk of radiation cataract after occupational exposure in interventional cardiology cardiology workers indicates there is an urgent need to educate these professionals in radiation protection to reduce the likelihood of cataract. A heart problem can affect your pet at any age although it is more often found in older pets.
Heart failure occurs when the heart no longer has the ability to pump blood around the body effectively. Heart failure can lead to congestive heart failure. If an animal is suffering from congestive heart failure, it usually accumulates fluid in the lungs although it can result in fluid accumulation in the abdomen as well. Animals suffering from congestive heart failure often experience difficulty breathing and frequent coughing. Some causes of heart failure include: congenital heart disease (animals born with a heart problem), valvular heart disease (abnormalities of the valves of the heart), heartworm disease , and arrythmias (rhythm disturbances).
Many heart problems can be identified on physical examination.
Additional tests are usually required to accurately identify the cause of the heart disease. Additional tests include EKGs (electrocardiograms), radiographs (X-rays), and ultrasounds. Heart disease is a serious life threatening condition but early diagnosis and appropriate therapy can extend your pet's life.
