According to the American Institute of Biological Sciences: Biologists learn how living things work, how they interact with one another, and how they evolve. They may study cells under a microscope, insects in a rainforest, viruses that affect human beings, plants in a greenhouse, or lions in the African grasslands. Their work increases our understanding about the natural world in which we live and helps us address issues of personal well being and worldwide concern, such as environmental depletion, threats to human health, and maintaining viable and abundant food supplies. Careers in Life Science
There is a wide variety of different specialized fields in the biological sciences, and the list is growing rapidly. You can choose to work with a particular type or group of organisms, such as birds, viruses, or trees. You can work with a particular system within an organism, such as cells, tissues, or whole organs. You can focus on the interaction between organisms and their environment in a particular area, such as the ocean, desert, or forest. Or you could focus on the chemical, physical, or medical aspects of living things. Although many life scientists are primarily involved in research and development, and work in the laboratory or field, you may decide you want to work in another area within the science. There are many jobs available in such areas as management, administration, service work, sales, teaching, financial support, legal support, writing, illustrating, or photography. You do not have to work in a laboratory for scientific training or thinking to be useful. Some life scientists are employed by zoos, museums, aquariums, botanical gardens, schools, libraries, farms, health clubs, parks, the government, and research foundations. The following is a small sample of some of the different fields and jobs available in biology.

Who comes to Duke?
...
Counselor's Perspective
Each student is unique and the manner in which he or she chooses and plans for a career in the health professions is highly individualistic. You should use your undergraduate years to explore new areas of interest and then focus on the area that is the most exciting to you. Identify your strengths and weaknesses. Discover who you are.
Many students entering Duke major in the life sciences and conduct research because they plan to attend medical school, dental school or vet school. The decision to purse a career in the health professions should be made only after careful reflection of your personal motivation and a realistic assessment of the demands of medical training and working with the sick.
If you find yourself drawn to the health professions, take time to evaluate your options. Don't forget there are many other opportunities in the health professions (e.g., physicians' assistant, nursing, physical therapy, etc.) which you may find better suited to your professional and personal goals.

Wyandotte struggled through the late 1980s and early 90s with violence both in the community and school, and it faced possible closing when the district presented an opportunity for Wyandotte High to initiate reforms and become a model of positive change. Stewart, who had been a mathematics curriculum specialist with the district, was brought to Wyandotte in 1997 as a school improvement facilitator to partner with the principal as a change agent. She became principal in 2007. While all schools in the Kansas City Kansas Public Schools system have now gone through this reform effort, Wyandotte was the first along with its feeder elementary and middle schools. Much of the 1997-98 school year was devoted to understanding the features of this reform and creating a plan for Wyandotte with full implementation coming the next year.
