I am a retired MSgt (2004) with 24 years experience in the aircrew career field, both as a loadmaster (AFSC 1A2x1) and flight engineer (AFSC 1A1x1). I have been to every continent at one time or another, and regularly flew 300 to 500 hours a year. I have been involved in the operations in Grenada, Panama, Kosovo, Afghanistan and Iraq. I can answer most questions you may have about enlisted Air Force life in general, assignments, benefits, and enlisted aircrew operations. NOTE: If you have specific recruiting and/or medical questions about how to get into this career field as a civilian, they have changed since my time, so that is best answered by a recruiter or MEPS. I can answer questions about military personnel wanting to RETRAIN. If you are asking about being an Air Force pilot, please be advised my area of expertise is ENLISTED aircrew operations, NOT OFFICERS. Available

ROTC cadets attend civilian colleges and may choose their majors, but they must take military-oriented courses throughout their four years. They also participate in regular physical conditioning and military exercises, as well as a four- to six-week field exercise during one summer. Upon graduation, cadets are commissioned as second lieutenants. The final Air Force officer commissioning program is Officer Training School. OTS offers both Basic Officer Training and Commissioned Officer Training. Basic Officer Training is a 12-week course for college graduates and enlisted airmen who wish to become officers. Candidates may have a degree in any field, though those with technical degrees typically have a better chance of acceptance. BOT covers military customs and courtesies, military history, officership, leadership, field exercises, drill and ceremonies, and small arms training. The first half of the course orients the candidate to the military, and the second half prepares them to execute their responsibilities as officers. Graduates are commissioned as 2nd lieutenants. Individuals interested in career opportunities as Air Force officers should contact an Air Force recruiter. They will be required to take the Air Force Officer Qualifying Test, which tests math, verbal and analytical aptitude.

Commissioning programs: Army
There are four routes to obtaining a commission as a U.S. Army officer: West Point Military Academy, Reserve Officer Training Corps, Officer Candidate School or a warrant officer application. OCS lasts 14 weeks and includes intense physical and leadership training, as well as academic training. Soldiers must be younger than 23 when school starts, have a high school diploma or GED, have no criminal record, apply for and be admitted at the college, and earn a 1000 on the SAT or 45 on the ACT. Warrant officers are soldiers who specialize in a specific area throughout their careers. They make up only 3 percent of the Army, and soldiers apply by filling out an Army application, then attending the six-week Warrant Officer Candidate School at Fort Rucker, Alabama. Soldiers must have a GT score of 110 or higher, a secret security clearance and they pass the physical fitness test. Aviators may be any rank, and soldiers from other fields must be at least a sergeant. For more information about attending West Point: http://admissions.usma.edu/soldiers/
