42. Music: The Fate Of Mann (The Boston Phoenix . 06-05-00)
Commentary on the singer s career and the music industry.

The Fate Of Mann
Why Aimee can't get no respect By Wayne Robins These are tough times for smart rock-and-roll women. And Aimee Mann is still stuck with stupid. Stupid, of course, is the record business, which Mann appears to believe, with good reason, has put her on the fringe. Once the great blonde hope of educated, romantic underachievers, Mann recently released her third solo album, Bachelor No. 2, or the last remains of the dodo , on her own SuperEgo label after putting it out as an Internet-only disc. No one should have had any illusions about Mann's marriage to the mainstream even before the shareholder replaced the consumer as the industry's target audience. Her first solo album, Whatever , was lost in the 1993 dissolution of Imago Records. And its well-reviewed follow-up, I'm with Stupid , which Geffen released in 1995, enhanced her prestige without doing much damage to the charts. Mann and Geffen, or Interscope, or any major label, are less suited to each other in the year 2000 than Rudy Giuliani and Donna Hanover. In a music-business cycle obsessed with youth (and the youther the better), it's as regrettable as it is unavoidable to have to point out that Aimee Mann is old enough to be Britney Spears's mother. And so there's something disquietingly sour about Bachelor No. 2.

The program assists the creative and professional development of young artists through mentorship by local artists and arts professionals. The model has been successfully used to develop music and film mentoring programs. The program includes residential music summer camps and mid-year studio recordings for young people between the ages of 12 and 15 with an interest in music as a part-time or full-time career.
Music and interviews from the camp were played on the programs The Sonus Lab, Potterwatch and The Morning Glory Breakfast Show. Tags:

Not Just the Beatles , detailing his life from within and without his long career in the music business.
Not Just the Beatles is a breezy, conversational read, in which the stories flow as if you were hearing them from an old friend. A rapturous mix of musical adventures, the book glows with an underlying sense of optimism, whimsical love and caring for the world.
NY ROCK
How did you find out about the Beatles? SID In 1962, I was taking a course at the New School for Social Research on 12th Street where I now teach a course on the music biz. For the course, the professor mentioned a bunch of books for us to get as well as some English papers to read. I didn't have time to read the books, [so I picked] up the English newspaper that was a very thin airmail edition. This was the right time to be reading an English newspaper. So here I am reading little stories about this group from Liverpool that is causing a lot of "hysteria." By the end of the course, I was so Beatle-ized by what I read, even though I did not hear a note, I said, "gotta get 'em." I'd been promoting concerts at the Brooklyn Paramount, where I took over from Alan Freed because he got into a lot of trouble for payola. Murray the K was my MC and they were hot shows. I called Brian Epstein at home, who was still living in Liverpool, got him on the phone and tried to sell him on the idea of the Beatles coming over here. He said, "America is not playing our records. I don't want my boys to play to an empty house. We are superstars here." He told me I was the first American to call him, even before Ed Sullivan. I won him over by saying "I'll put your boys in Carnegie Hall."

Lazy Lester is All Over You
01 January 1999 by Scott Jordan "I was living in Rayne, Louisiana and working construction for a short period of time, working around Kaplan and Abbeville, around there," Lester remembers. "It had rained and work was off for a while so I went to Baton Rouge, and on my way back to Rayne, Lightnin’ Slim was on the bus. He didn’t know who I was, but I knew him. When I got to Rayne, it was only 25 cents more to go from Rayne to Crowley. So I said, I’m going to keep going to Crowley and see about this recording business they’ve got going on over here. I didn’t have no intention of making a record. So I got off the bus, and I told Lightnin’ that I’m going around with him to see about all this". After we got around there, I introduced myself, and Lightnin’ told everybody I wanted to see what was going on. "I was a drummer, and played guitar and bass too. When I started messin’ around with the harmonica in the studio, everybody wanted me to play with the harmonica. I played with Lonesome Sundown, and did some harmonica with some of the French guys down there, like Nathan Abshire. I’d play percussion, washboard, all that stuff."

Career Opportunities for Majors in Music
    Introduction
Rutgers offers two distinct programs of study in music. Students can pursue a Bachelor of Arts degree (B.A.) in music through one of the liberal arts colleges. This is a generalist liberal arts major. A Bachelor of Music degree (B.M.), offered through the Mason Gross School of the Arts, is more specialized and is oriented towards professional careers in performance, jazz, or music education. Both degree programs provide a thorough study of music theory and music history. While some performance is also included in the B.A. program, the B.M. program offers much more intensive training in this area. Some students pursue careers closely related to music, such as performers, educators, songwriters, conductors, arrangers, composers and actors. Others choose careers behind the scenes, or in the business area of music in careers such as producers, engineers, managers, agents, and in publishing and sales. Many careers do not require a specific major but rather a wide range of demonstrated skills and accomplishments. Thus, some graduates pursue careers in fields quite unrelated to music. Regardless of your career choices, increasing your marketability to employers through internships, responsible work experience, good grades and involvement in college activities is important. A bachelor's degree is sufficient for many entry-level positions, but for advancement in an area of specialization, an advanced degree may be required.
