Carpets in India
Kashmir is known for its fine quality carpets, an average piece being made with about 324 knots per square inch. Although the carpet industry here is of Persian origin, Kashmir has developed some of its own designs based on shawl patterns, the traditional paisley, leaves and flowers. Fine quality carpets are also produced in Amritsar (Punjab), Agra (Uttar Pradesh), Jaipur (Rajasthan) and Eluru and Warangal (Andhra Pradesh). The Mirzapur-Bhadohi belt in Uttar Pradesh represents the most important area of carpet weaving in the country as it has the largest concentration of carpet weavers. This area specialises in the lower, medium and low-fine qualities and accounts for nearly 90 per cent of the total production of carpets in India. The quality here ranges between 100 and 200 knots per square inch. The fineness of a carpet is judged from the number of knots per unit area, and the design, colours and quality of yarn. The firmness, thickness and appearance of the back of a carpet are the important considerations in determining the quality of the carpet. The Indian carpet industry is export oriented with the largest importers being Germany and the USA followed by Switzerland, United Kingdom, Australia and Canada.

  • Exhibitions T urkish people have been weaving carpets for thousands of years. Originally leading nomadic life the Turkic people migrated from Mongolia, through central Asia to the fertile lands of central Anatolia, where they began to settle. I nitially simple techniques were used for producting flat woven mats which were originally woven out of the soft roots of plants. Slowly this developed to weaving from wool. Looms were portable to suit the lifestyle and rugs were woven for purely practical uses ie : mats and wall coverings. These flat woven mats are what we now know as kilims. S lowly the process developed as did a demand for softer, warmer floor coverings. Double knots were added to the weaving process creating the pile recognised in a carpet. T raditionally village women wove carpets for their own family use or for their dowry. Colours and patterns were influenced by tradition, availability of colours of wool and a women's desire to express herself, her feelings and the events that were happening in her life within the design of the carpet. P rincipally kilims and carpets were made according to the needs of the household or village but other types such as Soumak and Zili were also produced, although these were very much the product of fantasy.

    Persian rug history
A Persian rug has a wide variety designs and styles, and trying to organize them in to a category is a very difficult task. With the passage of time, the materials used in carpets, including wool and cotton, decay. Therefore archaeologists are not able to make any particularly useful discoveries during archaeological excavations, save for special circumstances. What has remained from early times as evidence of carpet-weaving is nothing more than a few pieces of worn-out rugs. And such fragments do not help very much in recognizing the carpet-weaving characteristics of pre-Seljuk period (13th and 14th centuries AD) in Persia. Among the oldest pieces discovered are those found in Eastern Turkestan, dating back to the third to fifth centuries AD, and also some of the hand-weavings of the Seljuks of Asia Minor on exhibit in Ala’edin Mosque in Konya and Ashrafoghlu Mosque in Beyshehir, Turkey. These pieces attracted the attention of researchers earlier this century, and now they are kept in the Museum of Turkish and Islamic Art in Istanbul and the Mowlana Museum in Konya. In a unique archaeological excavation in 1949 however, the exceptional Pazyryk carpet was discovered among the ices of Pazyryk Valley, in Altai Mountains in Siberia. It was discovered in the grave of a Scythian prince by a group of Russian archaeologists under the supervision of Sergei Ivanovich Rudenko. Radiocarbon testing revealed that Pazyryk carpet was woven in the 5th century BC. This carpet is 1.83×2 meters and has 36 symmetrical knots per cm². The advanced weaving technique used in the Pazyryk carpet indicates a long history of evolution and experience in this art. Most experts believe that the Pazyryk carpet is a late achievement of at least one thousand years of technique evolution and history.

Carpets are among the most popular home embellishments available. A carpet can turn an old, dull room into a very elegant one. Thus, for most homes, nothing can give a room its complete look without the presence of this luxurious floor cover. By definition, carpet is a fabric, which is used to cover the floor. In its first few years of existence, the carpet was normally used as wall coverings and tablecloths. It did not have anything to do with the floor until about the 18the century. Most people trace its roots to Central Asia between the second and third millennium B.C. Due to the fact that majority of the population is giving aesthetics more thought than usual, a huge variety of carpets has now emerged. Carpets are sorted by brand, type, and style. And although the style and design are the usual factors of choice, the carpet manufacturers can influence selection for some people. That is, some brands matter to some buyers. We heard a lot about the timeless beauty of Oriental carpets and the fascinating patterns of Persian carpets. But knowledge of carpets does not start and end with simple fascination. These types of carpets are usually associated with affluence. In fact, some people consider them to be too beautiful to be simply placed on the floor. Thus, we often see homes with these carpets hung on the walls.

    History of Carpet
"The History of British Carpets" by Bertram Jacobs (1968) is the definitive volume on the subject, published by the respected trade magazine "CFR" with the encouragement of the then editor Harry Tysser. With the kind permission of Carpet Review we have incorporated information recorded by Mr Jacobs in the following summary. "Carpets" by George Robinson, published by Textile Book Service in 1972 is also an excellent manual and has a broader scope including the mechanics of construction. "Tufting" by Derek Ward, published by Textile Business Press (1969) is also an invaluable source, especially for the recent history of carpets.
