    Central African Republic Africa
CULTURE Africans generally place great emphasis on clothing, and a trip to the CAR is a treat to see the quality of people's dress. Women often wear a loose top and a length of cloth (pagne) around the waist as a skirt. Men's casual clothes - which look like pyjamas - are in the same distinctively 'African' designs, but most of the cloth is imported from the Netherlands. The most authentic cloths are the handmade, designed fabrics, such as woodblock prints and batiks and tie-dyed cloths. Dress is normally conservative and shorts are frowned upon, and the standards are usually tougher for women than men.

Identification. The official name of the country is the (CAR). Previously it had been Oubangui-Chari, one of the four territories of French Equatorial Africa, bound by the Ubangi River to the south and the Shari to the north. Before independence, there was no sense of a common culture among the indigenous peoples, who thought of themselves as members of lineages and clans, and as villagers. After colonization, when members of different ethnolinguistic groups came into contact, there developed a sense of being riverine (Sango, Gbanzili, and Ngbaka on the Ubangi River), forest (Mbati and Isungu) or grassland peoples (Gbaya and Banda). There is also the hunting, gathering and patron-dependent culture of the Babinga (pygmies) in the forests of the southwest.

    Culture
On this web page you can find a little bit about the people, education and the way of life of the Central Africa Republican people.
    The People

The people are composed of many groups. The Banda, the Baya, the Mandjia, and the Bwaka. They are found in the western part of the country. Most of the people are farmers who work long hours in their fields. The chief crops that they grow are manioc, corn, sweet potatoes, yams, cooking bananas, and peppers. Cotton and Coffee are cash crops that are shipped to foreign markets. Rice, peanuts, and tobacco are grown either for home comsumption or for marketing.
The Sara live in the northern part of the country. They raise grains, such as millet, sorghum, sesame, beans, peas, and squash; and they keep a small size breed of horses. Many of Sara men served with the French army when the country was a French colony. These people are extremely skilled in river navigation, especially in shooting the rapids in their dugout canoes.
Much of the east is thinly populated with about five persons to each square mile of land. The shadow of the slave trade still hangs over the area. Today in some of the highlands one can still see caves and caverns that served as hiding places for the people of the area.
    Way of Life
Most of the people live in clusters of villages. The task of building the family dwelling falls upon the men. Traditional huts are mostly round with walls of mud and sticks topped by a conical thatched roof. However, more and more larger regtangular huts are being constructed. The walls are made of dried mud, grass mats, or planks. Roofs may be made of thatch or store-bought sheets of corrugated iron.

INTRODUCTION A landlocked country, Central African Republic lies in the heart of equatorial Africa. The country gained independence in 1960 and today is known for its diamonds, which account for more than half of the export earnings. Location of Central African Republic Central African Republic is bordered on the north by Chad, on the east by Sudan, on the south by the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC, formerly Zaire) and the Republic of the Congo, and on the west by Cameroon. Flora And Fauna of Central African Republic Most of the country has savanna vegetation, which is a grassland distributed with trees. Open grassland is found in the extreme north, and a dense rain forest covers the major part of the southwestern area. Commercially valuable trees include the sapele mahogany and the obeche. As far as fauna is concerned, almost every animal of the African Tropics is found in the country.
