Introduction
The disorder, which was called Little's disease for many years, is now known as spastic diplegia This finding challenged the accepted medical theory about the cause of cerebral palsy. It also stimulated researchers to search for other factors before, during, and after birth that were associated with the disorder. Advances in imaging technology, such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), have given researchers a way to look into the brains of infants and children with cerebral palsy and discover unique structural malformations and areas of damage. Basic science studies have identified genetic mutations and deletions associated with the abnormal development of the fetal brain. These discoveries offer provocative clues about what could be going wrong during brain development to cause the abnormalities that lead to cerebral palsy.

A child with cerebral palsy being examined. ICD G ICD OMIM ... MeSH Cerebral palsy CP ) is an umbrella term encompassing a group of non-progressive non- contagious motor conditions that cause physical disability in human development , chiefly in the various areas of body movement. Cerebral refers to the cerebrum , which is the affected area of the brain (although the disorder most likely involves connections between the cortex and other parts of the brain such as the cerebellum ), and palsy refers to disorder of movement. However, " paralytic disorders " are not cerebral palsy — the condition of quadriplegia , therefore, should not be confused with spastic quadriplegia , nor Tardive dyskinesia with dyskinetic cerebral palsy , nor diplegia with spastic diplegia , and so on.

CEREBRAL PALSY
What is cerebral palsy? The definition and classification of cerebral of cerebral palsy have always been a source of great confusion and controversy. The term itself is somewhat misleading: whereas, CEREBRAL appropriately emphasizes the importance of the brain, PALSY is an anachronism that in modern parlance is usually associated with paralysis which suggests a complete loss of movement (not typical of cerebral palsy). There are so many definition of cerebral palsy; there are three recurrent elements that provide the basis for a concise definition.
  • There is a significant problem with motor function.

Each year approximately 4,500 American infants are diagnosed with cerebral palsy. Symptoms of CP may include shaking of limbs, loss of balance, inability to walk, seizures, and delay in growth and development. The disorder may also be linked to learning disabilities and mental retardation. Although CP can be caused by an infection in the first month of life or by an injury in early childhood, most cases are congenital , or present at birth, and their cause is unknown. Through research, however, scientists have pinpointed some specific events during pregnancy or around the time of birth that can damage motor centers in the developing brain and increase the risk of CP. For example, infections that affect the mother during pregnancy such as rubella, cytomegalovirus, or toxoplasmosis may affect the fetus in the uterus, causing brain damage. Research scientists have also uncovered certain characteristics, called

    Cerebral Palsy Overview
Cerebral palsy (CP) is an umbrella term for a group of disorders affecting body movement, balance, and posture brain paralysis abnormal development or damage in one or more parts of the brain that control muscle tone and motor activity (movement). The resulting impairments first appear early in life, usually in infancy or early childhood. Infants with cerebral palsy are usually slow to reach developmental milestones such as rolling over, sitting, crawling, and walking.

Photo by Andres Balcazar More Images zSB(3,3) Children with cerebral palsy have problems with muscle tone, affecting their ability to keep their balance, posture, and to walk and move. Unlike other medical conditions that can affect a child's ability to move or walk, with cerebral palsy, the problem isn't in the child's muscles or nerves. Instead, damage to the child's brain affects his ability to control his muscles.
    Cerebral Palsy Causes
The brain injury that causes cerebral palsy sometimes occurs early in pregnancy , while a baby's brain is still developing. On the other hand, it can also occur much later in pregnancy, during delivery, or less commonly, early in a baby's life.

Home Cerebral Palsy Cerebral Palsy What is cerebral palsy? Cerebral palsy (CP) is a broad term that describes a group of neurologic (brain) disorders. It is a life-long condition that affects the communication between the brain and the muscles, causing a permanent state of uncoordinated movement and posturing. CP may be the result of an episode that causes a lack of oxygen to the brain. What causes cerebral palsy? Many cases of CP have unknown causes. The disorder occurs when there is abnormal development or damage to areas in the brain that control motor function. It occurs in approximately two to three out of every 1,000 live births. CP is more commonly seen in boys, multiple births, and in African-Americans. Risk factors for CP include the following:
    • prematurity
    • very low birthweight (especially in babies weighing less than 1,000 grams, or 2.2 lbs.) viruses chemical/substance abuse during pregnancy infection bleeding in the brain trauma complications of labor and delivery
