How common is cerebral palsy? MADDSP tracks the number of school-age children living in five counties of metro Atlanta who have cerebral palsy, hearing loss, vision impairment, intellectual disabilities, and/or autism spectrum disorders. In 1996, an estimated 3.6 per 1,000 8-year-old children in metro Atlanta, or about 1 in 278, had cerebral palsy. In 2000, the prevalence was an estimated 3.1 per 1,000, or about 1 in 323, 8-year-olds. In 1996 and 2000, respectively, 55% and 60% of children with cerebral palsy also had one or more other developmental disabilities tracked by MADDSP. [ Read more about MADDSP CDC also studied how many children in metropolitan Atlanta had cerebral palsy in the mid-1980s. This project was done as part of the Metropolitan Atlanta Developmental Disabilities Study (MADDS), which studied how common certain disabilities were in 10-year-old children. We found that 23 of every 10,000 10-year-old children had cerebral palsy. Eighty-one percent of the children had spastic cerebral palsy. Seventy-five percent had one or more other disabilities (epilepsy, intellectual disabilities, hearing loss, or vision impairment. [

  • What is the UCP Research and Educational Foundation? What is cerebral palsy (CP)? Cerebral palsy, also referred to as CP, is a term used to describe a group of chronic conditions affecting body movement and muscle coordination. It is caused by damage to one or more specific areas of the brain, usually occurring during fetal development; before, during, or shortly after birth; or during infancy. Thus, these disorders are not caused by problems in the muscles or nerves. Instead, faulty development or damage to motor areas in the brain disrupt the brain's ability to adequately control movement and posture. "Cerebral" refers to the brain and "palsy" to muscle weakness/poor control. Cerebral palsy itself is not progressive (i.e. brain damage does not get worse); however, secondary conditions, such as muscle spasticity, can develop which may get better over time, get worse, or remain the same. Cerebral palsy is not communicable. It is not a disease and should not be referred to as such.

table of contents Congenital infection with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV, the virus that causes AIDS) also causes brain damage in children, though it usually causes mental retardation rather than CP. It is likely that many other infections in the expectant mother injure the developing fetus, but they are not recognized as causative factors because the woman who has the infection either does not recognize the symptoms of infection or is symptom-free. Premature infants are at a much higher risk for developing cerebral palsy than full-term babies, and the risk increases as the birth weight decreases. Between 5 and 8 percent of infants weighing less than 1500 grams (3 pounds) at birth develop cerebral palsy, and infants weighing less than 1500 grams are 25 times more likely to develop cerebral palsy than infants who are born at full term weighing more than 2500 grams.

See Additional Representative Verdicts CEREBRAL PALSY Cerebral palsy (CP) refers to a group of conditions that affect control of movement and posture. Because of damage to one or more parts of the brain that control movement, an affected child cannot move his or her muscles normally.
Annually, 8,000 - 10,000 babies and infants are diagnosed with cerebral palsy. In most cases, families will never know the direct cause, however, some estimates suggest that 20% of children diagnosed with CP received a brain injury during the birthing process.
While the United States does not currently have a system to track the rate of cerebral palsy incidents, studies have shown that there has been an increase in doctor error, birthing mistakes, and medical malpractice associated with Cerebral Palsy.

The Voice of the Cerebral Palsied of Greater Vancouver (VCP) has been a non-profit society, under the Societies Act of British Columbia, since 1977. The VCP is a self-help support society formed in the firm belief that Cerebral Palsied (CP) adults are the only experts on their own needs and aspirations. The VCP is controlled and operated solely by adults with Cerebral Palsy and other birth defects. It is the only organization in B. C. which truly represents Cerebral Palsied people. The VCP was formed to provide a continuum of services and programs necessary to assist Cerebral Palsied individuals in developing the skills and confidence to assume a productive and meaningful role in society.
    Mission Statement

    Goals
    • To promote public awareness and acceptance of people with Cerebral Palsy as active, equal and contributing members of society. To promote active participation by people with Cerebral Palsy in initiating necessary social change to improve the quality of life for people with disabilities and to protect their dignity.
