ICD OMIM DiseasesDB ... MeSH Cervical cancer is malignant neoplasm of the cervix uteri or cervical area. It may present with vaginal bleeding , but symptoms may be absent until the cancer is in its advanced stages. Treatment consists of surgery (including local excision ) in early stages and chemotherapy and radiotherapy in advanced stages of the disease. Pap smear screening can identify potentially precancerous changes. Treatment of high grade changes can prevent the development of cancer. In developed countries, the widespread use of cervical screening programs has reduced the incidence of invasive cervical cancer by 50% or more. citation needed Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is a necessary factor in the development of almost all cases of cervical cancer. HPV vaccines effective against the two strains of HPV that currently cause approximately 70% of cervical cancer have been licensed in the U.S, Canada, Australia and the EU. Since the vaccines only cover some of the cancer causing ("high-risk") types of HPV, women should seek regular Pap smear screening, even after vaccination.

Who Should Get the HPV Vaccine?
Medical Author:
Medical Editor: William C. Shiel Jr., MD, FACP, FACR Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection of the cervix can lead to cervical cancer. A vaccine designed to prevent cervical cancer and other diseases caused by infection with HPVs was approved for use in the U.S. in June 2006. This is the first vaccine to be developed against a known risk factor for the development of a cancer While some HPV types infect the skin and cause benign warts men and women The most common HPV types that infect the genital area are HPV types 6, 11, 16, and 18. Among these, HPV types 6 and 11 are most commonly associated with benign lesions, such as genital warts and mild precancerous changes of the cervix. In contrast, HPV types 16 and 18 are the types found in the majority of cancers as well as in severe precancerous changes of the cervix. The vaccine, called Gardasil, targets these four common HPV types.

Two HPV vaccines are currently on the market: Gardasil and Cervarix Both vaccines protect against the two HPV types (HPV-16 and HPV-18) that cause 70% of cervical cancers, and cause some other genital cancers; Gardasil also protects against the two HPV types (HPV-6 and HPV-11) that cause 90% of genital warts. In addition, Gardasil has been shown to prevent potential precursors to anal vulvar vaginal and penile cancers. HPV vaccines are expected to protect against HPV induced cancers of these areas as well as HPV induced oral cancers Public health officials in Australia, Canada, Europe, and the United States recommend vaccination of young women against HPV to prevent cervical cancer, and to reduce the number of painful and costly treatments for cervical intraepithelial neoplasia , which is caused by HPV.

  • [Printer-friendly format] A n estimated 12,000 new cases of cervical cancer occur each year in the United States, and each year about 4,000 U.S. women will die from this disease. Cervical cancer is largely preventable by having regular Pap tests . About one half of cervical cancer cases occur in women who have never had a Pap test. If cervical cancer is found and treated early, more than 90% of women who have it can be cured. The more advanced the disease, the lower the cure rate. This pamphlet explains

How Cervical Cancer Develops A woman’s cervix (the opening of the uterus at the top of the vagina) is covered by a thin layer of tissue made up of cells . Healthy cells grow, divide, and are replaced as needed. Cancer of the cervix occurs when these cells change. Cancer cells divide more rapidly. They may grow into deeper cell layers or spread to other organs. The cancer cells eventually form a mass of tissue called a tumor. It often takes several years for cervical cancer to develop. During this time, the cells on or around the cervix become abnormal. The early cell changes that occur before cancer is present are called

Cervical Cancer
What is Cervical Cancer?
Cervical cancer begins in the lining of the cervix. Cervical cancers do not form suddenly. Normal cervical cells gradually develop precancerous changes that turn into cancer. Doctors use several terms to describe these precancerous changes, including cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN), squamous intraepithelial lesion (SIL), and dysplasia. Some women with precancerous changes of the cervix will develop cancer. This process usually takes several years, but sometimes it can happen in less than a year. For most women, precancerous cells will remain unchanged and go away without any treatment. But if these precancers are treated, almost all true cancers can be prevented.
Can Cancer and Precancerous Changes of the Cervix Be Prevented?
The most common form of cervical cancer starts with precancerous changes, and you can prevent most precancers of the cervix by avoiding risk factors.
Risk Factors for Cancer and Precancerous Changes of the Cervix
Several risk factors increase your chance of developing cervical cancer. Women without any of these risk factors rarely develop cervical cancer. Although these risk factors increase the odds of developing cervical cancer, many women with these risks do not develop this disease. When a woman develops cervical cancer or precancerous changes, it is not possible to say with certainty that a particular risk factor was the cause.

Cervical cancer
Cervical cancer is cancer that starts in the cervix, the lower part of the uterus (womb) that opens at the top of the vagina.
Causes
Worldwide, cervical cancer is the third most common type of cancer in women. It is much less common in the United States because of routine use of Pap smears. Cervical cancers start in the cells on the surface of the cervix. There are two types of cells on the cervix's surface: squamous and columnar. The majority of cervical cancers are from squamous cells. The development of cervical cancer is usually very slow. It starts as a precancerous condition called dysplasia. This precancerous condition can be detected by a Pap smear and is 100% treatable. That is why it is so important for women to get regular Pap smears. Most women that are diagnosed with cervical cancer today have not had regular Pap smears or they have not followed up on abnormal results. Undetected, precancerous changes can develop into cervical cancer and spread to the bladder, intestines, lungs, and liver. It can take years for precancerous changes to turn into cervical cancer. Patients with cervical cancer do not usually have problems until the cancer is advanced and has spread.
