    HUMAN PAPILLOMA VIRUS (HPV):
A virus that is the cause of warts of the hands and feet, as well as lesions of the mucous membranes of the oral, anal and genital cavities. More than 50 types of HPV have been identified, some of which are associated with cancerous and precancerous conditions. The virus can be transmitted through sexual contact and is a precursor to cancer of the cervix. There is no specific cure for an HPV infection, but the virus often can be controlled by podophyllin (medicine derived from the roots of the plant Podophyllum peltatum) or interferon, and the warts can be removed by cryosurgery, laser treatment or conventional surgery. Some scientitsts believe HPV can "clear" out of the body. CDC Report to Congress, Prevention of HPV and cervical cancer, July 2004

What is cervical cancer?
Cancer is a disease that happens when body cells don't work right. The cells divide really fast and grow out of control. These extra cells form a tumor. Cervical cancer is cancer in the cervix , the lower, narrow part of the uterus (womb). The uterus is the hollow, pear-shaped organ where a baby grows during a woman's pregnancy. The cervix forms a canal that opens into the vagina (birth canal), which leads to the outside of the body. If the Pap test finds serious changes in the cells of the cervix, the doctor will suggest more powerful tests such as a colposcopy (kol-POSS-koh-pee). This procedure uses a large microscope called a colposcope (KOL-poh-skohp). This tool allows the doctor to look more closely at the cells of the vagina and cervix. This and other tests can help the doctor decide what areas should be tested for cancer. Return to Top

    Cervical Cancer
Each year, about 11,000 women in the United States learn that they have cervical cancer. Cervical cancer is one of the most common cancers of the reproductive organs. Most cases of cervical cancer are caused by infection with human papillomavirus (HPV).
Before cervical cancer appears, the cells of the cervix go through precancerous changes known as dysplasia, in which abnormal cells begin to appear in the cervical tissue. An annual Pap test looks for changes in cervical cells that can lead to cervical cancer.
Through increased use of the Pap test, the cervical cancer death rate has greatly declined. Chances of successfully treating cancer are highest when detected early.
    Types of Cervical Cancer
There are two main types of cancer of the cervix; each develops from different tissue types. The most common (about 80 to 90%) are squamous cell carcinomas. The other 10 to 20% are adenocarcinomas.

New evidence on the impact of cervical cancer screening and treatment using HPV DNA tests, visual inspection, or cytology This 3-page fact sheet puts new evidence from India into context and provides guidance relating to investment in visual inspection-based screening programs in low-resource settings. The document seeks to help program managers and decision-makers interpret and use the new data. Ten Key Findings and Recommendations for Effective Cervical Cancer Screening and Treatment Programs In early 2007, the ACCP partners met to assess newly-analyzed results of key studies in India, South Africa, Peru, and Thailand. These new data spurred the partners to outline ten key findings and recommendations for global policy and practice related to cervical cancer screening and treatment in low-resource settings.
