People of Chad Chad is made up of numerous ethnic groups. While Arabs are important in the north and east, Africans dominate in the south. Muslims make up about 59 percent of the population. About 17 percent of the people are Christians while most of the remaining population adheres to traditional religions.
The official languages are French and Arabic, but numerous other African languages are also spoken. Chadic languages, especially Hausa, are spoken in the Lake Chad area. Flag of Chad The flag of Chad has three equal vertical bands of blue (towards the hoist side), yellow, and red. It is similar to the flag of Romania as well as the flags of Andorra and Moldova, both of which have a national coat of arms centered in the yellow band.

Chad is a land-locked country in north central Africa measuring 1,284,000 square kilometers (496,000 sq. mi.), roughly three times the size of Texas. Chad is in central Africa, south of Libya. Chad has 5,968 km of border against Cameroon, the Central African Republic, Niger, Nigeria, and Sudan. Chad has four climactic zones: it has broad, arid plains in center, desert in north, dry mountains in northwest, and tropical lowlands in south. Only 3% of Chad is arable land and none of it has permanent crops. Environmental hazards in Chad include hot, dry, dusty harmattan winds occur in north, periodic droughts, and locust plagues. Lake Chad, which is in Chad and Cameroon, was once the second-largest lake in Africa but has shrunk dramatically during the last few decades and is now down to less than 10% of its former size. From the 11th to the 15th century, the state of Kanem was the dominant force in the region, occupying much of the area that makes up present-day Chad. In the 15th and 16th centuries, the state of Borno, which had its center on the other side of Lake Chad (in present-day Nigeria), exercised a major influence. A gradual process of Islamization took place in the region from this time, especially during the 16th and 17th centuries during the kingdoms of the Bagirmi and Ouaddai. The slave trade was a key component of their economies and as this declined from the early 19th century onwards, so did the kingdoms. In the 1880s, riven by internecine feuding, they were conquered by the Sudanese warlord Rabih al-Zubair. The Europeans arrived a few decades later, in the latter stages of their carve-up of the African continent.

    • It is believed that if too many eyes look at a tree that it will either die or not produce fruit. This is why most people sitting under a tree in a village are not looking up into the tree as they talk, but rather out in the distance. In the villages, it is the popular belief that if you take some of the dry matter from the corner of a dog's eye and put it in your own, that you will see demons. Please, do not ever try this (it is not safe, hygienic, or wise), but if you do, you are advised to try only one eye at first and to have soap and water at hand to wash it out in a hurry if the experience proves too scary for you. You have been warned! Because the weather year-round is often sunny, we actually consider rainy days to be "good weather", and an extended period of sunny days (especially during the rainy season) as "bad weather".

Chad Farran has made a name in the San Diego music scene by playing hundreds of shows with many local bands throughout the region, producing music for TV shows and independent films, and recording CD projects for local musicians. Over the past 3 years he has been involved in the production of music for the popular surf/travel show On Surfari that airs on FOX network's Fuel TV, and has managed to capture the essence of foreign countries that the show travels to by studying the traditions and instruments from each place, incorporating them into musical pieces, and creating a contemporary and refreshing soundtrack.
Farran's most recent CD release is On Surfari Sessions , with 22 songs featured in the first season of Fuel TV's On Surfari. The CD features a rich landscape of music with ethnic instrumentation and grooves inspired by travels to India, Panama, Mauritius and New York.. In 2007 Farran released a CD from the original compositions he had written as a singer/songwriter.

    History in Chad
Edit This The Contemporary Attitudes institutions and problems of Chad are the outgrowth of historical traditions and tendencies that have evolved over more than 1 000 years. The country is populated by diverse yet in many cases interrelated peoples whose evolution was characterized by intersecting migrations splinterings and regroupings. Most of the country's population groups originated in areas generally north and east of Chad's present-day boundaries. Chad's geographic position along major trans-Saharan trade routes has also affected its historical development. In early times trade consisted of goods and slaves seized in raids on groups in the south. Consolidations of small chiefdoms led to the evolution of a series of kingdoms and empires in the central region of which the most important were Kanem-Borno Bagirmi and Wadai. The kingdoms and empires based their power on and were ultimately subjected to raids or the payment of tribute. Although there were early communities in both northern and southern Chad most of the country's known history is focused on the Muslim peoples of the central region. The political fortunes of the various kingdoms and empires were constantly affected by internal factionalism and external invasion- -factors that still influenced political affairs in the 1970s and 1980s. Political disintegration was evident in both Borno and Bagirmi when the French arrived in the late nineteenth century. The rulers of Wadai resisted the French advance. The leaders of Borno and Bagirmi however regarded the French less as conquerors than as a counterbalance to the ascendant Wadai.
