Chameleons are very interesting pets. However, before buying one, there are many things that should be taken into consideration. Remember: buying a chameleon means taking on a long-term commitment. With life spans as high as 9 or 10 years (sometimes more), chameleons are definitely not, and should never be impulse purchases.
For newcomers, I recommend going through the main parts of this website to learn the fundamentals of chameleon care as the minimum prerequisite before purchasing a chameleon. Ideally, you should go through this site, as well as buy a decent book and read it cover-to-cover. I also recommend getting your enclosure as well as all the furnishings before getting your chameleon, so that you can get everything just right before adding your new pet. A well set up and thought out enclosure will lessen the stress of moving from the pet dealer to your home.

Family Chamaeleonidae Native species in Hawaii: Introduced species: 1 In 1972, the Jackson's Chameleon Chamaeloeo jacksonii ) was introduced to the Hawaiian Islands from its native land of Kenya and Tanzania. In the last 30 + years, these species have multiplied and formed a large breeding population on Oahu, Maui, Kauai, and Hawaii. In particular they can be found on the Koolau range, Oahu. Their abundance may be underestimated based on the fact that these chameleon's are difficult to see unless you happen to look right at one. Chameleons in general are amazing creatures. They have independently focusing eyes that allow them to see 360 degrees. Their tongue is 1.5 times the length of its body and has a type of suction cup on the end that allows them to snatch up prey. Individuals are highly territorial and live solitary lives, defending their home turf. Males have three long horns, while females do not. And, of course, as is so well known, chameleons can change the color of their skin if frightened.

Known for their ability to change color, they can be seen wearing a variety of colors, including brown, green, blue, yellow, red, black or white. Communication is an important reason behind these color changes. With color, chameleons can communicate with others, expressing attitudes such as their willingness to mate. Contrary to popular belief, chameleons cannot display limitless colors and do not change colors in a camouflage response to their surroundings. Instead, their skin changes in response to temperature, light, and mood. Other lizards, like the green anole, can also change color. But this green-to-brown color change is much less dramatic than the vivid, distinct color and pattern changes of chameleons. allow chameleons the ability to survey the world with nearly 360-degree vision.

More Information Reptile Guide Main Veiled Chameleons Holly Frisby, DVM, MS
Veiled Chameleons are the most commonly bred and available species of chameleons, and are now being bred in captivity. They are hardy reptiles which require tall cages for perching, supplemental heat and UV light, a varied insect diet, and a dripping water source. Natural Environment Physical Characteristics Chameleons have a prehensile tail, which aids them in balance when climbing. Their feet are also adapted for clinging to branches, and are quite strong. They have rotating eyes, which act independently of each other: one can focus up and to the right, as the other looks down and to the left. Their tongues are sticky at the end and can be extended out to capture prey.

Care Sheet for Chameleons
Average Rating Given To This Care Sheet Is (1=lowest, 5=highest) Last Updated: 03/19/2004
Main Category: Lizards
Sub Category: Chameleons
Care Sheet Submitted By: Elfomatic
Years Experience: 5 to 10 Years
Species: Chameleonsgeneralized
Other Species or Phases this Care Sheet May Cover: None. Do not attempt to substitute specific species care sheets for other species. Chameleon species vary greatly in their care especially with regards to temperatures and humidity. This is a general care sheet. If you would like specifics, you need to seek a care sheet for your species.
Sexing and Characteristics: Varied ... males do live, on average, longer than females.
Mostly Active During: None
Substrate and Water Needs: SUBSTRATE:
I would not recommend substrate of any kind. Many people do put it in their enclosures but it is not necessary. Your chameleon will spend no time on the floor of the enclosure unless it is sick.
Furthermore, chameleons occasionally will be seen hunting for ckickets on the floor. If substrate is used they will ingest it and potentially get sick.

How to Buy a Chameleon
By an eHow Contributor I want to do this! What's This? Buying a chameleon is perhaps more difficult than many shoppers realize. Not only should you be concerned about picking a healthy chameleon, the lizard's dietary and habitat requirements are demanding and must be taken into account. A few simple steps can help ensure an informed purchase. Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  • Learn as much as you can about chameleons. By learning as much as possible before purchasing a chameleon, you can be sure to provide a healthy environment for your pet . Chameleons are complicated animals , so consult a book or a reputable website like Chameleons Online for detailed care instructions. Decide where to buy. Chameleon enthusiasts often insist that pet stores are not great places to buy chameleons. However, chameleon dealers are in short supply in much of the country, as most of them are in California or Florida. By educating yourself about the lizards before you purchase, you can judge whether your local pet store employs knowledgeable workers and is a suitable place to purchase a chameleon. Also, consider reptile shows when trying to purchase a healthy pet.
