In other words, it was commonly believed that the world is unpredictable because it is complicated. The Stock Market as a chaotic system.
Chaos Theory can be generally defined as the study of forever-changing complex systems. Discovered by a meteorologist in 1960, chaos theory contends that complex and unpredictable results will occur in systems that are sensitive to small changes in their initial conditions. The most common example of this, known as the "Butterfly Effect," states that the flapping of a butterfly's wings in China could cause tiny atmospheric changes which over a period of time could effect weather patterns in New York. Although chaotic systems appear to be random, they are not. Beneath the random behavior patterns emerge, suggesting, if not always revealing, order. Recognizing that the stock market is a non-linear, dynamic, chaotic system

An Introduction To Chaos
Many people believe that twentieth century science will be remebered for three main theories: quantum mechanics, relativity, and chaos. Chaos theory is a blanketing theory that covers all aspects of sciece, hence, it shows up everywhere in the world today: mathematics, physics, biology, finance, and even music. Where classical sciences end, chaos is only beggining.
The term chaos theory is used widely to describe an emerging scientific discipline whose boundries are not clearly defined. The terms complexity theory and complex systems theory provide a better description of the subject matter, but the term chaos theory will be used throughout this document as it is more widely accepted.
Chaos theory is a developing scientific discipline which is focused on the study of nonlinear systems. To uderstand chaos theory, you must first have a grasp upon its roots: systems and the term nonlinear.

Chaos Theory
The word "chaos" is sometimes taken to mean the opposite of "cosmos", in that the latter term has connotations of "order". Until the last few decades, chaotic systems have not been studied nearly as much as ordered systems, perhaps because chaotic systems are far more difficult to understand...
What is a chaotic system?
Looking at the rising smoke from a cigarette illustrates some of the differences between ordered and chaotic systems. Initially the smoke rises in a smooth upward flow (laminar flow), which breaks down a few inches above the tip of the cigarette into a disordered, turbulent motion(turbulent flow). This is an example of a transition from an ordered system into a chaotic one. A stream of water flowing out of an appropriately adjusted faucet exhibits similar behaviour, which is ubiquitous in a host of phenonomena, both man-made and natural. The weather systems of the atmosphere (which are intertwined with the heat and mass flows in the oceans) are chaotic. A system of more than two bodies orbiting under each other under their mutual gravitational attraction is also chaotic, by extension the entire solar system is a chaotic!
One non-technical definition of a chaotic system goes as follows: A chaotic system is one in which a tiny change can have a huge effect. Thus the oft heard statement that a butterfly in China can cause a hurricane in the Atlantic. What makes the situation even more difficult is that we have only recently begun to forge the mathematical tools necessary to study these problems. As usual, some of the seminal works on chaos were performed by physicists of the former USSR, whose work received scant attention until recently; although today, chaotic systems are being extensively studied both experimentally and theoretically.

chaos theory
Chaos theory is the study of nonlinear dynamics,  where seemingly random events are actually predictable from simple deterministic equations. In a scientific context, the word chaos has a slightly different meaning than it does in its general usage as a state of confusion, lacking any order . Chaos, with reference to chaos theory , refers to an apparent lack of order in a system that nevertheless obeys particular laws or rules; this understanding of chaos is synonymous with dynamical instability , a condition discovered by the physicist Henri Poincare in the early 20th century that refers to an inherent lack of predictability in some physical systems.  The two main components of chaos theory are the ideas that systems - no matter how complex they may be - rely upon an underlying order, and that very simple or small systems and events can cause very complex behaviors or events. This latter idea is known as sensitive dependence on initial conditions , a circumstance discovered by Edward Lorenz (who is generally credited as the first experimenter in the area of chaos) in the early 1960s.

A good Saturday
Nov 14th Posted by Sherry in Uncategorized 1 comment Again with the bullet points; a recipe for a good Saturday: - When your oldest goes to spend the day with her grandparents, spend some time patiently teaching your youngest to play Operation. - Eat lunch and then enjoy the ridiculously beautiful day by taking said youngest to the park for an hour and a half. - Go straight back out with the little one and the dog, rescue some rogue balloons blowing through a parking lot, practice some agility, then go home. - Order in pizza instead of cooking and eat while giggling a lot. - Welcome your big girl home, dole out snacks, then announce bedtime. - Open a bottle of Shiraz and enjoy some movie time with your husband. - Fall into bed exhausted yet happy, realize you still need to update your blog, and do so painstakingly on your iPod Touch. It was a REALLY good Saturday. How was yours?
