The Beauty of Chaos is in its deceptive appearance. Scientific chaos looks disorganized, and can even pass the statistical tests for randomness. Despite this, chaos has an underlying order that can even be predicted in the short term. Delve into some chaos theory while you're here. The Art of Chaos Chaos begins with logic, the formalization of a mathematical equation. Art, too, begins with logic. Formalize the rules of logic into a mathematical formula, plot the result, and you will have created a fractal. Add to this self-similar design the element of human consciousness, and you will have created once-only chaos art. See Chaos on Canvas Visit my original Chaos Art Exhibit and feel free to e-mail me at sales@jessiegietl.com if you see anything you like. All of the artwork is for sale unless otherwise noted. Did the Romans Know? In the words of Julius Caesar, In bello parvis momentis magni casus intercedunt.
(In war great events are caused by small things.) This sounds uncannily like Lorenz' butterfly effect, which pop chaologists love to discuss in the first chapters of their books, because the concept is so easy to get their brains around. Lorenz, of course, was referring to weather, and Caesar, as always, was referring to war. But both nailed a key point in chaos theory: everything depends on that initial small event, or control parameter. Whether or not you believe that Cicero flapping his lips in ancient Rome can cause your webmaster to break out in a rash in present day Los Angeles, I bring you the fun side of

In the Wake of Chaos:
Unpredictable Order in Dynamical Systems
Stephen H. Kellert
The University of Chicago Press 1993 A book review by Danny Yee "Chaos" has rapidly approached "quantum" as the favourite scientific buzz-word of crackpots, pseudo-scientists, and others of that ilk. Even in the humanities and social sciences chaos theory is less often used to model phenomena than invoked as support for outré metaphysical claims or sweeping generalisations about the demise of Western science. As an exposition of the philosophical implications of chaos theory, Kellert's In the Wake of Chaos is therefore an important work. Kellert begins by defining chaos theory as "the qualitative study of unstable aperiodic behavior in deterministic nonlinear dynamical systems". He goes on to explain this in non-technical language, but he doesn't provide a general introduction to chaos theory: readers are expected to have read at least popular accounts of the subject. Chapter two addresses the topics of predictability and sensitive dependence on initial conditions. Kellert argues that the problems of prediction raised by chaos theory require a new form of impossibility, between

1st Place XPSL
Rookie Winners! The recent 5-man event in Las Vegas, NV hosted by the XPSL was awesome. Our team took the first place trophy home! We went down to have some fun in Vegas and play some paintball, little did we know we'd end up with a trophy! We made some new friends down there with " The Brotherhood " from California and "Cialis" from Arizona. Thanks to Dan Bonebrake and Vortekx for the assistance they both provided! We look forward to our next outside tournament. The 2004 season is coming to a crawl with the onset of winter, maybe we'll get lucky and an indoor field will allow us to continue to KICK-BUTT! =) Be sure to take a look at a few of the photos from the trip ! (some are from PBExtra and Force of Nature). MSTS 2004 First Place overall in 3 and 5 person Both the 3-man and the 5-man team for Chaos Theory took first place in the 5 part Midnight Sun Tournament Series (MSTS). This year Chaos has really improved their style. We started with with the additions of Tamara from Adrenaline Junkies, Curtis from Bonzai (and then on to ELEMENT Gold), and Sam from Liquid. All of these players are fantastic on and off the field! The Core of Chaos Theory (Mike D, Ryan, Harry, and Kevin) with our new friends are taking new learning steps and forming into a more aggressive, competitive paintball team. We will even be travelling to compete in Las Vegas for an XPSL 5-man event!

Chaos Theory
Chaos derives from the Greek and typically refers to unpredictability. It is defined as the study of complex nonlinear dynamic systems. Complex implies just that, nonlinear implies recursion and higher mathematical algorithms, and dynamic implies nonconstant and nonperiodic. One can call it 'hyperspace physics'. Thus chaos theory is, very generally, the study of forever changing complex systems based on mathematical concepts of recursion, whether in the form of a recursive process or a set of differential equations modeling a physical system. Chaos theory attempts to explain the fact that complex and unpredictable results can and will occur in systems that are sensitive to their initial conditions. History Chaos theory progressed more rapidly after mid-century, when it first became evident for some scientists that linear theory, the prevailing system theory at that time, simply could not explain the observed behavior of certain experiments like that of the logistic map. The main catalyst for the development of chaos theory was the electronic computer. Much of the mathematics of chaos theory involves the repeated iteration of simple mathematical formulas, which would be impractical to do by hand. Electronic computers made these repeated calculations practical. One of the earliest electronic digital computers, ENIAC, was used to run simple weather forecasting models. An early pioneer of the theory was Edward Lorenz whose interest in chaos came about accidentally through his work on weather prediction in 1961. Lorenz was using a basic computer, a Royal McBee LGP-30, to run his weather simulation. He wanted to see a sequence of data again and to save time he started the simulation in the middle of its course. He was able to do this by entering a printout of the data corresponding to conditions in the middle of his simulation which he had calculated last time.

If that enabled us to predict the succeeding situation with the same approximation , that is all we require, and we should say that the phenomenon had been predicted, that it is governed by laws.
