What is a Chemical Engineer?
A look at chemical engineering as a profession and a career. Have you ever been asked "So what does a chemical engineer do, anyway?" Did you have an answer? Explaining what chemical engineers do is not always an easy task, even if it is your chosen profession. Chemical Engineering is a career that is both intellectually and financially rewarding... one that can lead to high level technical positions, or to jobs in management, government, or academia. Some chemical engineering graduates go on to medical, law, business, or graduate school. If they do, they usually use their chemical engineering degree to specialize - for instance, a chemical engineer with a law degree might focus on patent or environmental law. The diversity of the chemical engineering field indicates that chemical engineers are an integral part of the fabric of the world industrial complex, and they will be called upon in the future to solve the worlds environmental, energy, and chemical process problems. Chemical Engineer
Chemical engineers use chemistry, physics, and math along with engineering tools to solve problems relating to the production and use of chemicals. This includes things like refining gasoline and other fuels from petroleum, purifying of drinking water, treating waste, recovering raw materials, and producing and processing food. They can work in chemical manufacturing, electronics, pollution control, even medicine and food processing.
    Examples
    • Design environmentally friendly cleaning products
Develop chemotherapy that has fewer side effects
      Turn seawater into drinking water
Develop ways of mass producing vaccines to ward off epidemics
Reduce pollution by developing cleaner sources of energy

    Education
Chemical engineers need a four-year college degree. Most have degrees in chemical engineering, although some have specialized degrees in biochemical, petroleum, metallurgical, or sanitation engineering.
Work Environment Most chemical engineers work in manufacturing industries, in research and development labs, productions plants, or management. Some provide engineering services as consultants in research and testing, design, or policy. The environment and hours that they work varies with the industry and kind of job. specializes in delivering high quality chemical engineering software for chemical professionals. ALL of our applications are extremely easy to use and have a natural, intuitive user interface. Our award winning and premier product, PhysProps , is undeniably the most advanced and easiest to use thermodynamic/chemical physical property database and property estimation tool ever developed. The data base is composed of over 6,500 chemical specie names and their synonyms. There are 28 physical properties for each compound in the data base. If a particular compound is not in the database, there are 18 properties which can be estimated from standard techniques. Another of our fine, award winning applications is EngVert . This application is an advanced scientific unit conversion and steam properties application (both IFC-1967 and 1997 formulations). EngVert is pre-configured to convert units in 39 major catagories and is user expandable to allow you to add conversions as your needs grow! Our latest addition is PipeDrop . This application is an advanced hydraulic pressure drop calculator for liquids, gases, and 2-phase flow. There are 3 modules for calculating fluid flow hydraulics in pipes and ducts for single lines, a pump network, and orifice plates. There is also a collection of 8 tools to ease various hydraulic calculations: physical properties, gas density calculation, compressibility factor calculation, flow rate conversions, heat capacity ratio calculation, minor pipe fitting loss tool, ASTM/DIN pipe table, and material roughness tool.

    Chemical Engineer
Chemical engineering is the branch of engineering that deals with the application of physical science and life sciences with mathematics to the process of converting raw materials or chemicals into more useful or valuable forms. In addition to producing useful materials, modern chemical engineering is also concerned with pioneering valuable new materials and techniques. Low-end Salary: $52,215/yr Median Salary: $69,432/yr High-end Salary: $86,550/yr Education: Engineers typically enter the occupation with a bachelor’s degree in mathematics or an engineering specialty, but some basic research positions may require a graduate degree. Most engineering programs involve a concentration of study in an engineering specialty, along with courses in both mathematics and the physical and life sciences. Engineers offering their services directly to the public must be licensed. Continuing education to keep current with rapidly changing technology is important for engineers. Math Required: College Algebra
    Geometry
    Trigonometry
    Calculus I and II
    Linear Algebra
    Differential Equations
Statistics When Math Is Used: Much of chemical engineers’ mathematical work is planning and the theoretical “modeling” of production processes and analysis that takes place on computer or in preliminary reports.
