NOAA Weather Radio All Hazards (NWR) is a nationwide network of radio stations broadcasting continuous weather information directly from the nearest National Weather Service office . NWR broadcasts official Weather Service warnings, watches, forecasts and other hazard information 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Working with the Federal Communication Commission's (FCC) Emergency Alert System , NWR is an "All Hazards" radio network, making it your single source for comprehensive weather and emergency information. In conjunction with Federal, State, and Local Emergency Managers and other public officials, NWR also broadcasts warning and post-event information for all types of hazards – including natural (such as earthquakes or avalanches), environmental (such as chemical releases or oil spills), and public safety (such as AMBER alerts or 911 Telephone outages). Known as the "Voice of NOAA's National Weather Service," NWR is provided as a public service by the

    • Evacuate the immediate area Call Security ( and report the location, injuries, chemical name, hazards, and amount of the spill. Request medical assistance if required. Isolate the area, prevent re-entry and wait for assistance. Get a copy of the appropriate Material Safety Data Sheet from your area file or master file in Facilities Services (DLC) and room 4800 (NWC).
If the spill is toxic, corrosive or larger volume (greater than 4L), the building may require evacuation. Once the decision has been made, the fire alarm will be activated and everyone must leave. If possible, give a copy of the MSDS to the emergency response team. For minor spills, barricade the area, wear appropriate protective equipment, contain the spill with Kitty Litter or Spill Kit absorbent, or a boom to form a dike around the spill and call Security at 2400 for assistance. Transfer the material to a suitable container and label as hazardous waste. Assistance for minor spills is also available by calling Facilities Services at 5400 or Chemistry (spill cart) at 5240 (New Westminster) or 6262 (David Lam). If the spill is outside the college building or involves transportation, notify Security at

Home Monitoring Information Environmental Sensitivity During the time that spill data has been collected, the BVI averaged a total of 9 spills per year with the greatest amount having taken place in 1999. So far during 2006 we have had a total of ten oil spills. Particulary, there was a very bad spill at Lloyd's ghut on January 15th which leached straight into Beef Island Channel. And there was an additional raw sewerage and oil spill around the same time in the Slaney area that affected a very large region of the southern coast. And the cleanup efforts.

Comply with OSHA 29CFR 1910.120 Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response Individuals should be familiar with the properties and hazards of the materials with which they work with. In the event of a chemical spill, the individual(s) who caused the spill is responsible for prompt and proper clean-up. Improper clean-up of a chemical spill may result in injury, illness, fire, a release to the environment, or property damage. Planning for chemical spills is essential. Before beginning work with chemicals, one should be sure that he or she has adequate training for cleaning up small spills, and that the appropriate types and amounts of spill clean-up materials and personal protective equipment are immediately available.

Broadcast Chemical / Biological Disaster Warnings To Residents
In the event of a biological hazard or chemical spill in your neighborhood, our emergency phone service could quickly warn your community. With our emergency notification phone service, you can broadcast warning messages to thousands of households in your community warning of catastrophic disasters including chemical spills and other biological and environmental hazards. Emergency alert messages can be simultaneously delivered in just minutes using our network of phone systems and services. Pre-recorded warning messages can be played giving households information regarding the disaster location and whether a community evacuation is planned or necessary. You can send a broadcast warning to specific neighborhoods or communities in the event of a chemical or biological disaster and provide priority delivery of these messages to those nearest the danger. Multiple messages can be delivered to different members of the community based upon proximity to the disaster area. Calls can be directed to operators that are standing by to handle special individual emergencies. Emergency response and dispatch messages can also be broadcast seeking volunteers or special assistance from emergency personnel.

Chemical Spill Management
Purpose
This procedure outlines the requirements for the management of chemical spills in the workplace to minimise effects to health and safety from exposure to chemical spills and reduce the impact on the environment. The procedure applies to all University staff students and contractors in all areas of the University where chemical substances are transported, purchased, stored, handled, or used, including vehicles of visitors or suppliers who bring substances into the University that are potentially hazardous The procedure provides general guidance and therefore each laboratory or other work area that use chemical substances should have specific procedures for the particular types of substances used within the workplace or brought onto the premises.

    Chemical Spills
The range and quantity of hazardous substances used in laboratories require preplanning to respond safely to chemical spills. The cleanup of a chemical spill should only be done by knowledgeable and experienced personnel. Spill kits with instructions, absorbents, reactants, and protective equipment should be available to clean up minor spills. A minor chemical spill is one that the laboratory staff is capable of handling safely without the assistance of safety and emergency personnel. All other chemical spills are considered major. In the event of a chemical spill or hazardous material release in the laboratory which poses a serious danger to personnel:
    Immeadiate Actions
  • Clear the area Check for any persons involved Isolate the spill (if safe to do so) Contact the area supervisor or Safety Officer
  • The primary concern is to protect health and safety. No action should be taken during an emergency response that directly or indirectly violates this principle.

Disasters: Chemical Accidents and Spills
By their nature, the manufacture, storage, and transport of chemicals are accidents waiting to happen. Chemicals can be corrosive, toxic, and they may react, often explosively. The impacts of chemical accidents can be deadly, for both human beings and the environment. Many if not most products we use in everyday life are made from chemicals and thousands of chemicals are used by manufacturing industries to make these products. The source of many of these chemicals is petroleum, which is refined into two main fractions: fuels and the chemical feedstocks that are the building blocks of plastics, paints, dyes, inks, polyester, and many of the products we buy and use every day. Fuels and chemical feedstocks made from petroleum are called organic chemicals. The other important class of chemicals is inorganics, which include acids, caustics, cyanide, and metals. Commercial products made from inorganics range from car bodies to computer circuit boards. Of the more than forty thousand chemicals in commercial use, most are subject to accidental spills or releases. Chemical spills and accidents range from small to large and can occur anywhere chemicals are found, from oil drilling rigs to factories, tanker trucks to fifty-five-gallon drums and all the way to the local dry cleaner or your garden tool shed.
