Water-Chemistry Data for Selected Hot Springs, Geysers, and Streams in Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, 2001-2002
U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 2004-1316 By R. Blaine McCleskey, James W. Ball, D. Kirk Nordstrom, JoAnn M. Holloway, and Howard E. Taylor This report is also available as a pdf.
ABSTRACT
Water samples were filtered and preserved onsite. Water temperature, specific conductance, pH, Eh, and dissolved hydrogen sulfide were measured onsite at the time of sampling. Alkalinity and acidity were determined by titration, usually within a few days of sample collection. Concentrations of thiosulfate (S O ) and polythionate (S n O ) were determined as soon as possible (generally minutes to hours after sample collection) by ion chromatography in an onsite mobile laboratory vehicle. Total dissolved iron and ferrous iron concentrations often were measured onsite in the mobile laboratory.

The Radiation Chemistry Data Center
(RCDC) at the Notre Dame Radiation Laboratory provides access to critically-evaluated numerical chemical property data such as reaction rates, reduction potentials, and radiation chemical yields abstracted from the primary radiation chemistry and quantitative photochemistry literature. The RCDC has long provided key services to the radiation chemistry community on two distinct but inter-related fronts. The original purpose was to gather, compile and evaluate key radiation chemical data such as product yields, reaction rates, reduction potentials etc. from a far-flung literature. To support this data compilation, a bibliographic database was established at Notre Dame and, somewhat later, biweekly updates were published from this bibliographic resource as a current awareness service to the community. Operations were subsequently extended to cover the literature on quantitative photochemistry. In recent years the bibliographic component of the RCDC activity has been largely superceded by the widespread availability of many modern electronic literature-search products. Given limited in-house resources, it was also decided last year to transition from the data accumulation phase of the RCDC operation. The previously-compiled databases have been frozen in place.

Chemdex status
The software used for the earlier version of Chemdex packed in totally after a server update and so the update planned for summer 2009, which is not finished, is here now. The bad news is most of the links are not yet in the system, but will appear slowly in the next few weeks. The good news is the links get checked automatically now and therefore the link fail rate of some 25% on the old system will be well under 5% or so and should stay at that level. Keeping web site links up to date is a problem for any directory site, as you may have spotted on this and other chemistry directories. Hopefully the new system (the wonderful open-source Drupal) will do a lot of the updating, so benefiting all of us. Searching for sites is improved vastly using the new "facetted search" system being built to the right. It allows you to refine searches based on key words in a comfortable sort of way. You can also search on words as well

A history of synthetic detergents and of the synthetic detergent industry.
http://www.chemistry.co.nz/deterghistory.htm
Home Previous Synthetic Detergents - History Synthetic Detergent Production History ... Detergent Books Detergent History Synthetic Detergents Soil Identification
Development of the Detergent Industry
Although the start of the synthetic detergent industry is not shrouded in the veils of history as were the beginnings of the soap industry, it is nevertheless not easy to pinpoint exactly when the detergent industry, as such, came into being. The primary problem is to decide exactly what is being referred to as a synthetic detergent. The term itself leads to confusion. In the USA the words surfactant or syndet are being used, whilst in Europe the term 'tenside' (for tensio-active material) is coming into fashion.
Definitions
Many definitions of synthetic detergent have been proposed, all of which are very wide. The Comiti International de Dirivis Tensio Actifs has after several years of deliberation agreed on the following definitions:
  • Detergent: Product the formulation of which is specially devised to promote the development of detergency. Note: A detergent is a formulation comprising essential constituents (surface active agents) and subsidiary constituents (builders, boosters, fillers and auxiliaries).
