    The Water Molecule
Water is a tiny V-shaped molecule with the molecular formula H O. In the liquid state, in spite of 80% of the electrons being concerned with bonding, the three atoms do not stay together as the hydrogen atoms are constantly exchanging between water molecules due to protonation/ deprotonation processes. Both acids and bases catalyze this exchange and even when at its slowest (at pH 7), the average residence time is only about a millisecond. As this brief period is, however, much longer than the timescales encountered during investigations into water's hydrogen bonding or hydration properties, water is usually treated as a permanent structure. Water molecules (H O) are symmetric (point group C ) with two mirror planes of symmetry and a 2-fold rotation axis. The hydrogen atoms may possess parallel ( ortho -H O) or antiparallel ( para -H O) nuclear spin. The equilibrium ratio is all para at zero Kelvin shifting to 3:1 ortho para O effectively consists of a mixture of non-identical molecules. Many materials preferentially adsorb

Water has always been fascinating for human beings, not only because fundamental for life at every level but also for its particular chemical properties, so that the same thermometric scale was referred on its freezing point (0C) and on its boiling point (100C). But what is really water? Chemistry has discovered its nature only in recent times, explaining its apparent contradictions. - Water structure and its chemical-physical properties. The first "strange" fact is that water (H2O) is a very small molecule respect to nearly all the others, with its very low molecular weight (18.0153 a.m.u., or atomic mass unit), but it has a relatively very high melting and boiling temperature (T). Just those T have been fixed as the reference points for the international Celsius degrees scale and only this fact can underscore the great importance of H2O in our world. For ex., ethanol (CH3-CH2-OH), with a molecular weight of 50 a.m.u., has a melting T of -114C and a boiling T of 78.3C and a density of 0.789 g/cm3, (against 1.000 of pure water) so, being more volatile than water.
