Home Welcome to the famous Marshall Chess Club, one of the oldest chess clubs in the United States!
We have been in our beautiful townhouse in Greenwich Village since 1931.  Its rooms have seen some of the greatest players in the world play The Royal Game. This is where Bobby Fischer won against Donald Byrne in "The Game of the Century." And here, you'll find the board that Fischer played on in the  1965 Capablanca Memorial Tournament, a game that was conducted by telex because of Cold War tensions with Cuba.
Whether you're just starting out or a Grandmaster, the Marshall Chess Club is a warm place to learn more about chess, to watch others play, and of course to come play yourself. Please feel free to contact us or to drop by. We look forward to welcoming you!

Chester Wins Team Prize. Chris Doran's score of 4/5 was enough to secure at least equal first at the Frodsham Congress, while "Chester 1" stumble to first place in the team prize. Friday All six of Chester Chess Club's representatives were paired for the first game of the tournament and it was a fairly successful night for them. In the Major (under 170) top seed Chris Doran was held to a draw. In the Intermediate (under 130) section, equal top seed Joe Nemcek was victorious as was Steve Lloyd who benefited from his opponent's dodgy rook sacrifice. Meanwhile Colin White held super kiddie Henry Broadley. Finally in the Minor (U90) section both Ian Clayton and Marvin Hayes were comfortable winners.
Saturday On Saturday morning Marvin Hayes appeared to be cruising the minor section after a comfortable and relatively quick disposal of his second opponent. Colin White finished soon after but was unfortunately defeated. Elsewhere Joe Nemcek won again as did Chris Doran, while Ian Clayton could only manage a draw and Steve Lloyd suffered a defeat. Between rounds 2 and 3 the members of Chess club organised themselves into two teams for the team prize. Chester 1 consisted of Chris Doran (top seed in the Major), Joe Nemcek (top seed in the Inter) and Marvin Hayes (cruising in the

Let's take a look:: Requirements for starting a great school chess club Optimal Reality Volunteers Grandmasters working full-time giving personalized instruction to each player daily. Parent volunteers having only basic knowledge on how to play chess and limited time due to other commitments Equipment Plenty of tournament-quality sets, electronic chess clocks, demo boards, computer, and a comprehensive chess library Plastic mismatched sets picked up cheap at garage and clearance sales Facilities Quiet, carpeted play area with individual mahogany chess tables and small, intimate classrooms Cafeteria or gym (when available) Funding Billionaire philanthropist with a passion for scholastic chess who has bequeathed a small fortune to fund your club in perpetuity. Athletics for the Mind
Chess for Success is a non-profit educational program that uses chess to help children build and develop skills that will help them be successful in school and life. We sponsor chess clubs in elementary and middle schools where at least 35% of the children qualify for free and reduced lunches. Participating schools host after-school chess clubs and we pay a coach, usually a teacher in the school, to run a club that is open to all children at the school. Girls represent 35% of the members in our clubs which is triple the national average. Clubs meet for an hour twice per week and we require no fees from the participating schools or children. Chess for Success provides:
  • Training sessions for coaches
  • Comprehensive lesson plans
  • Chess equipment for the clubs
  • Library books for the school
  • Practice tournaments
  • Tournament registration fees for the regional and state championship tournaments
  • Chessboards and pieces for the children to take home at the end of the year
  • Tee shirts that the clubs design
Our program is very cost-effective, an average of $75 per student per year for 50 hours of after-school chess club. Clubs are very inclusive and one of the few after-school programs that brings together boys and girls, talented and gifted students, special education students and English language learners.

The USCF annual of 1946 states that the Twin Falls Chess and Checkers Club was United States Chess Federation (USCF) chapter No. 142. At the time it was the ONLY USCF chapter in the state. It met Friday evenings at the Rogerson Hotel. The founding officers were Donald L. Murphy, President; A. L. Paul, Vice-President; and Mel Schubert, Secretary-Treasurer. The Twin Falls Club met in a number of locations over the years - the Rogerson Hotel, Harry Barry Park Building, YWCA, and The College of Southern Idaho. The Twin Falls Club acted as host for many of the early Idaho Open Tournaments as well as the Idaho Closed, Southern Idaho Open, Twin Falls City Championship, Utah vs. Idaho match, and various other inter-city matches. Twin Falls played in the Idaho State Team Championship but was never able to advance beyond the semi-finals. The end of the old Twin Falls Club came after the YWCA was forced to reclaim the club’s meeting space for its own purposes.
