  • Child Discipline - Do Time-Outs Really Work with Toddlers?
Giving your toddler a "time-out" as a form of discipline seems easy enough. Remove your toddler from the situation where he is acting out, sit him in a chair or in another room, and tell him he is in "time-out" from the activity. Or, at least that's the theory. But do child discipline time-outs actually work? It often depends on who you ask and how you apply the discipline. zSB(3,3)

    Child Behavior Improved
Child behavior experts, including the American Academy of Pediatrics, recommend positive reinforcement for helping to solve behavior problems. We've taken this as our guiding philosophy for My Reward Board, building in auditory and visual positive feedback for each interaction between the program and your child. A cast of encouraging animated characters called "The Happies" inhabit our behavior chart and react with a thumbs up and applause whenever a task, goal, or chore is completed. Points are instantly awarded and a fun on-screen meter (using a "climbing the hill" metaphor) is updated to show your child's progress towards the weekly goal. Try it now risk free and see your child's behavior improve. - Aug. 28, 2007

For years the battle has raged between nature and nurture, between genetics and environment; but the bottom line is that, the answer is both. Humans have few behaviors which are absolutely instinctive. Sucking is one. Most, the vast majority, of our behaviors come from an interaction between what we brought with us from before birth and our environment, including our interaction with that environment. Some of the information provided below will differ to a degree because it comes from different sources which do not always agree. That’s ok, you’ll get a slightly different viewpoint on some of the subjects. The following is rather long and I expect that there will be both questions and discussion; however, it is worth including: “Why does he do that?

Child Behavior: What Parents Can Do to Change Their Child's Behavior
What is normal behavior for a child?
Normal behavior in children depends on the child's age, personality, and physical and emotional development. A child's behavior may be a problem if it doesn't match the expectations of the family or if it is disruptive. Normal or "good" behavior is usually determined by whether it's socially, culturally and developmentally appropriate. Knowing what to expect from your child at each age will help you decide whether his or her behavior is normal.

Are you frustrated and exhausted from arguing constantly? Do you find yourself "walking on eggshells" around your child, trying to avoid saying something that will set him or her off? Have you tried talking, screaming, punishing, pleading, and negotiating—but your child still walks all over you? All children behave badly from time to time. But when defiance, hostility and refusal to comply are ongoing, the behavior affects the entire family and requires a more serious intervention. Fortunately, we've seen that when parents use the right tools, they can change their child’s problem behavior—quickly and dramatically.

    Beyond Managing Child Behavior
So what is beyond managing child behavior? Discovering the brilliance within your child requires a more unique approach to parenting education. This approach enhances the quality of child health, while raising self esteem and promoting personal growth. After twenty years of working with children in both therapeutic and family environments, I have learned to take an eclectic approach to maximizing child performance. Handling disruptive, defiant behavior is certainly one part of the equation. We deal with the cards that are dealt, but then we go beyond to discover the root causes of all this disruption, and use this to accelerate the personal growth of our child. For example, learning to view temper tantrums of a defiant child as an opportunity, releases us to discover many keys to understanding not only our child, but understanding ourselves in a whole new light. On this site you will learn the basics of behavior management when dealing with emotional problems and bad behavior, so that your immediate needs can be handled. This in itself is quite an education. But as we will discover together, there is much more to learn and unlearn both about child behavior and ourselves.
