  • Starting a Daycare
Price Wars - The Cost of Child Care
Parents and child care providers seldom agree on the cost of child care. Some parents think they pay too much. Caregivers think they are underpaid.
It is an unfortunate fact that daycare is expensive, costing the average family approximately 20%
of their yearly income. Not an easy pill to swallow.
That cost is low, however, compared to the paucity of wages child care providers earn. It is these low wages plus a lack of benefits that, unbeknownst to parents, actually helps to subsidize their child care fees. According to Current Data on Child Care Salaries and Benefits in the U.S., a report by the Center for Child Care Workforce, and You Bet I Care Report 1: A Canada-Wide Study on Wages, Working Conditions, and Practices in Child Care Centres from the University of Guelph, child care ranks among the 15 lowest paid jobs. Average salaries are only one-half the national median. Those who earned higher wages include service station attendants, tree trimmers, and food servers.
That translates into a mean hourly wage for child care teaching staff of only $7.42 per hour in the U.S., and $10.92 per hour in Canada, a fact that makes it difficult for many to remain in the profession, says the Child Care Action Campaign in their Information Guide 27, Wages and Benefits in Child Care. The turnover rate for daycare workers ranks as one of the highest.

Neglected child dies while parents play World of Warcraft. This isn't gaming news.
By Ben Kuchera Last updated June 21, 2005 10:44 PM It's a sad story, and it's been popping up all over the Internet today. A Korean couple went to play World of Warcraft at an Internet cafe and they found their child dead from suffocation. Sadly, there are terrible parents everywhere, so why is this huge news? Because it involves a videogame. Even the so-called gaming press is spinning this poorly. Gamespot's headline? "Couple's online gaming causes infant's death." This is stupid, and is barely gaming news. So why is it making such large waves, and why am I talking about it in a gaming journal? While idiot parents are abusive daily and sadly, children die as a result, it's rarely big news. In this case though, we can add a story about how terrible games are or the addictive nature of MMORPGs. Gaming didn't cause that child's death, neglect did. If the couple went out to to a baseball game and the child died, would we be seeing stories about it in the sports section? The crime isn't sensational, it's the addition of the video game that makes people react. Now everyone who has preconceived notions about video games get to cluck their tongues and realize they were right all along, games are addicting and terrible and cause nothing but pain and misery. In truth, this isn't gaming news. It's the story of bad parents. It's not a cautionary tale, neglect happens daily across the world for an infinite amount of reasons. It's sad that the story is getting pumped up and reported simply because the couple played a game while they were out, and it's even sadder that it's being reported as gaming news just for the shock value.
